Book Review: The Season of Frost and Fire

Are you ready to fall in love with winter? I'm normally a spring, summer and autumn person. I struggle in the cold and dark. But The Season of Frost and Fire, by Rebecca Beattie, is gently persuading me to find beauty and magic in this time of year. She encourages exploring nature on crisp days, learning the secrets of the constellations on clear starry nights, and spending some evenings snuggled under a blanket reading a book.

The cover image reminds me strongly of ones you see on romantasy novels - a popular genre. But this isn't fiction, it's about ways of bringing enchantment into your own life. The subtitle is A Witch's Winter in 13 Rituals, starting with candle magic in early November, and I recommend it as the perfect way to conjure some cheer.

This is what publisher Elliott and Tompson says on its website:

Winter is often seen as a season for retreat. But what if the cold months could hold their own magic?

In The Season of Frost and Fire, green witch Rebecca Beattie shares thirteen luminous rituals to guide us through the darkest days – from fire rituals that welcome in the winter and banish fears on stormy nights to comforting ceremonies that honour our desire for transformation.

Discover the tarot cards that will light your path from the first frost to the thaw of early spring. Meet the forgotten goddesses who will become your companions and guides in the shadows. Hear bewitching tales of shapeshifting beings and thin veils between mist-covered worlds. Even in winter’s quiet, Beattie reveals the warmth, wisdom and renewal alive beneath the surface of things.

Bring back the light this winter – with The Season of Frost and Fire.

I haven't completely finished readingThe Season of Frost and Fire yet because I'm enjoying letting each chapter unfold at a suitable rate from November to December then January. However, I'm writing this review because I'd encourage anyone to start reading it too, and as soon as possible to use all it contains. I genuinely think it's one of the best books on winter magic available. It's informative, beautifully written and also practical. The spells, meditations and and rites within it work on a psychological level as well as being delightfully witchy.

The book is perfect for anyone wanting to explore ways of doing magic for the first time, but it's more than that. I'm an old crone who normally humbugs most of winter except the festive season and the odd snow day, but this book has encouraged me to embrace more of what it offers.
