For me autumn starts today, on September 1st, rather than the Autumn Equinox, but going by the what I can see happening in my garden and in parks near where I live, the season has already arrived. But what's the official definition of when autumn begins?
But when does autumn actually start, and when does it end?
It’s a bit confusing and there are many ways people define the seasons. Three of the main ways are astronomical, meteorological and phenological.
- Astronomically, the four seasons centre around the equinoxes and solstices. However, some see the autumn equinox as the start of the season and some believe it represents the middle.
- Meteorologists, or weather forecasters, tend to divide the year into sets of three whole months based on average temperatures. So, for the UK the autumn months are September, October, and November.
- A third way of defining autumn is to use what are known as phenological indicators. These are ecological and biological signs including leaves falling and the migration of birds and berries on bushes. Our changing climate seems to already be affecting this.
