Upcycled Craft: Turn a Ramekin into a Scrying Bowl

I made this little scrying bowl out of one of those glass ramekins that come with desserts. If you're anything like me you probably have too many of them as they seem too good to put in the recycling!  I've used them as candle holders in the past, but this is another way to reuse them. 

All you need is a glass ramekin, like the one pictured nearby, and some black paint. Turn the dish upside down and spray three coats of paint on the outside. Make sure you leave each coat to dry before applying the next. I rushed the process and so the paint is a little crinkled in places. You get a smoother finish with more patience. However, it doesn't matter too much, because the inside will still be shiny, as that's still a glass surface.

When the paint is fully dry, turn the bowl right side up, then fill it with water to use as a scrying bowl. The top photo shows the one I made ready for use!

The inspiration for this upcycling project came from Doreen Valiente's book An ABC of Witchcraft, in which she describes using this method to upcycle the glass front of an old clock. I've blogged about that in the past, and had a go at that method myself, but I suspect old clocks were easier to pick up cheaply when she wrote the book. Nowadays they're expensive vintage items, whereas ramekins are widely available on give-away sites even if you don't already have any in your cupboard.
