Should I stay or should I go?

Like many people at the moment, I’m being made redundant. Actually, my whole department is being made redundant.

It is supposedly part of a “restructuring”. The company is cutting four posts, and the people in them are being invited to apply for four new posts that are being created. The four new posts are remarkably like the four old posts, except that the company has tweaked the hours, money and terms and conditions.

If we still want to work for the company, we all have to take tests, go through interviews and impress our bosses that we will be good employees.

Do we feel happy about this? Of course not.

But maybe being forced to review my career isn’t such a bad thing. Maybe life is telling me it is time for a change. Maybe it is the right moment to get out and find the job I’ve always wanted.

I’ve been working for my current company for about four years.

I’ve enjoyed it, mostly, up until now. The pay was good, the people I worked with were nice and it was a convenient part-time job that gave me enough days off to care for my elderly mum until her death – which sadly happened this spring. Until now, I wasn’t even looking at what other jobs might be out there.

I still miss my mum a lot, but no longer being a carer does mean I can now do what I want, pretty much. Money is, of course, a vital issue.

If I take redundancy, I won’t be given a fat pay-off. I might get enough money to eke out over a couple of months. I’m lucky that I don’t have any big debts, but I don’t have any savings either, so I need a job that at least offers enough to cover my bills.

But, after that practical consideration, what I really want is a job that is worthwhile and enjoyable. It would be great to work for a charity, or for a company that produces pagan publications.

I’ve worked in publishing most of my adult life. I’ve been a feature writer, a researcher, a sub-editor and a production editor. Unpaid, I’ve also been writing A Bad Witch’s Blog for a few years. It would be lovely to be able to use my skills for a good cause.

And if anyone reading this knows of any suitable jobs for a blogging witch who lives in London, please leave a comment or send me an email at badwitch1234@gmail.com

So sorry to hear about your job news. Your blog is a great source of information and interest and I hope you feel you can continue.
This is a time of insecurity yet you mention the signs that herald a new turning - and maybe new opportunities.
Wishing you joy and abundance from your decision.

I've been through a similar round of restructuring where some people lost their jobs and others moved to fill those roles that were very similar. It's not a very pleasant experience and I hope that it happens quickly.

Have you had a look through LinkedIn to see what jobs are available? Another handy tip is to look at other people's public profiles for inspiration to revamp your CV.

All the best in your work whether in its current form or a new one.

Thanks very much for the comments and wishes.

Simon - I've now finally got around to joining LinkedIn.

Anonymous - I'm certainly not thinking of giving up blogging, just looking for a new day job!

Tom - can you tell me what that link is supposed to go to? I'm a little wary of clicking on links that aren't obviously genuine, as some links lead to virused sites etc. Sorry if I am being too suspicious.
