Rounding the Year: When the Snowdrops Bloom

Snowdrops are the quintessential flower of Imbolc, representing the first stirrings of spring even when the weather can still be wintry. I always watch for when they first appear in my garden each year. Sometimes they're fully in bloom by the start of February, but other years they arrive a little later.

Even in England they will show their characteristic white-and-green petals in different parts of the country at different dates. A few days ago, a friend who lives in the Lancashire countryside posted a photo she'd taken of an entire bank covered with snowdrops.

The picture above was taken by me in my South London garden yesterday, and only a few were in bloom. However, most were very nearly out. I hope they will show a wonderful display at Imbolc on February 1st.

Why don't we all go outdoors and have a look to see if the snowdrops are out where we live?  Leave a comment to say what you found, so we can know where to go to see them in their full beauty.

Share your Pictures

Since my book Rounding the Wheel of the Year  came out I've been inviting people to share seasonal pictures, art, crafts, words and other creativity. I'd love to encourage readers to record what's happening in nature in various ways including photographs, as well as other seasonal journalling, musings, drawing, painting and crafting.

Here are ways to share the things you're doing or what you see out and about as the wheel turns:

  • Leave a comment on this post about what you're up to
  • Find my prompts to share on my Facebook Page: Lucya Starza Pagan Portals Author
  • Share on Instagram with the tag #RoundingtheYear

Where to find Rounding the Wheel of the Year

Rounding the Wheel: A Poem for Imbolc 2025

Here's a poem I wrote for Imbolc 2025. The Wheel of the Year festival at this time of year is about the first stirrings of spring.

There is always a time
for new beginning.
When the world seems dark
there is always hope.

The sun will rise,
the sky will lighten,
stark earth will spring
with life again.

Be patient, beloved.
Stay safe in stillness.
Wait for the signs that
the wheel turns once more.

A Poem for Imbolc 2025 is copyright Lucya Starza

You can find more seasonal words and activities in my book Pagan Portals - Rounding the Wheel of the Year, published by Moon Books.

I'm Doing a Pilgrimage to Raise Money for Cats

This February I'm raising funds for the charity Cats Protection by taking on the Big Winter Roam challenge. I'm aiming to walk 100 miles over the course of the month and raise £100. That's £1 per mile. Obviously I'd love it if people support my challenge to help to make a better life for cats.

I think life is better with cats, especially if you are a witch. The picture at the top shows my two cats Tommy and Tuppence. They were found abandoned as kittens and I gave them a home with the help of Cats Protection.

Walking 100 miles in 28 days means averaging about 4 miles per day, and I intend to start on February 1st with a short pilgrimage. It is just over 4 miles from my home in Penge, London, SE20, to the stone circle at Hilly Fields, Lewisham, where I'm going to be meeting druid friends for an Imbolc rite on Saturday. This time, I'll be walking all the way instead of taking the bus. Wish me luck!

If you also want to contribute a little money to Cats Protection, this is the link to my Just Giving page.

Here are a few ideas for what a donation could mean:

  • £5 can buy two cats catnip toys, providing enrichment to stimulate their minds
  • £10 could cover the cost of microchipping for four cats
  • £15 could cover the cost of a worming treatment for three cats to treat and prevent parasites
  • £20 could cover the cost of 12 soft blankets to keep cats warm, cosy and feeling safe in their beds in care
  • £50 could feed 10 cats in Cats Protection care for 25 days
Over the course of the month I'll be sharing photos and thoughts about my walking for the the Big Winter Roam challenge, as well as visiting witchy and pagan places to blog about.
