Pagan events over the Winter Solstice

Here are events in London and nearby over the Winter Solstice and before Yule that could be of interest to pagans.

Now to Sunday 9 September 2012; Mummers, Maypoles and Milkmaids. Free exhibition, coinciding with the publication of the book of the same name, bringing together 50 photographs taken by Sara Hannant of regional rituals performed throughout the year to mark the changing seasons. The photo at the top shows The Holly Man, one of the pictures at the exhibition. Saturday 17 December; Free and Open Gorsedd of Caer Abiri Winter Solstice (Alban Arthan) celebration at Avebury Sun Circle, in Avebury, Wiltshire. Open druidic style ceremony to mark the winter solstice. Meet at the Red Lion Pub, Avebury, around noon for rite at around 2pm, ending around 3.30pm. Bring bread, cakes and drink to share, bring poetry to read.

Sunday 18 December; Outdoor Yule / Winter Solstice Ritual with Hern’s Tribe in woods in Croydon. Time: 2.30pm - 6pm. Meet at 2.30pm at Coombe Lane tram stop in Croydon. Sunday 18 December; Anderida Gorsedd Winter Solstice open ritual at the Long Man of Wilmington, Sussex. Meet near the car park between 1.30pm and 2pm for a walk up to the chalk hill figure at 2pm. Afterwards back to the Giants Rest pub in Wilmington for a social drink together.

Sunday, 18 December; Druidic Midwinter Ceremony on Primrose Hill with the Druid of Wormwood Scrubs. This is a free, open ritual but bring food for a picnic. The event starts at 12.45pm in the Hawthorne Grove on Primrose Hill, London NW1 8YH. For more details, call Jeremy on 07956 831503 during social hours.

Sunday, 18 December; Dawn of the Oak. Monthly moot on the third Sunday of each month that aims to provide a casual, safe and friendly environment for pagans to meet and learn from each other. Location: The Castle, 34-35 Cowcross Street, Farringdon, London EC1M 6DB Time: 3pm - 6pm.

Thursday 22 December; Pagan Federation London Yule / Winter Solstice Open Ritual by Tribe of Avalon. Venue: Conway Hall, Red Lion Square, Holborn, London. Doors open 7.30pm. Ritual starts at 8pm, feasting and social 9pm-10pm. Entrance: PF members/conc £5. All others £6. Please bring seasonal/home-made food and drinks to share at the feast after the ritual. Friday 23 December; Cross Bones Solstice/Christmas Vigil and Ceremony to honour The Goose and the outcast dead of Cross Bones Graveyard. Seasonal songs and Santa cakes, bring a ribbon to deck the shrine. Gather from 6.45pm in Redcross Way outside the Memorial Gates, SE1, opposite the Boot and Flogger, just north of the junction with Union Street. Nearest tubes Borough or London Bridge, 5 minutes walk away. The event is free and starts at 7pm. http://www.crossbones.org.uk/
