Pagan Events over Lammas In and Near London


This weekend and over the coming week Pagans are celebrating Lammas - or the festival of the first fruits of the harvest. Celebrated at the end of July or start of August, the festival is sometimes called Lughnasadh in honour of the Celtic God Lugh. Here are some events taking place in London and within travelling distance of the capital over Lammas:

Friday 27 July; True Stories on the Heath: Five ordinary people, five amazing true stories by the Kenwood Ladies pond after dark. Organised by London Dreamtime. Venue: Hampstead Heath. Time: 7.30pm. £2 per person. For more details and to book a place send an email to neckingernell@yahoo.com

Saturday 28 - Sunday 29 July; The Eastbourne Lammas Festival. Two-day festival with a seafront procession, live music, belly dancing, Morris dancing, stalls, pagan ceremonies and more. Saturday 28 July; Mysteries of Lammas - Custom, Lore, Magic. One-day Workshop with Suzanne Corbie. Spend the day immersed in the ancient lore of the Lammas with talks on folklore, traditional customs, pagan spiritual meanings and for in which it is celebrated in the present as well as in the past. Saturday 28 July; Free and Open Gorsedd Lughnasadh Rite - Druidic ceremony to celebrate the First Harvest at Avebury Stone Circle, Wiltshire. Meet at the Red Lion pub from noon for ceremony around 1.30pm. Free event, bring food and drink to share. The overflow car park will be available for camping on Saturday 28 July, tents down by 2pm Sunday.

Sunday 29 July; Treadwells Social Sunday: Learn a Skill - The Tarot, short introductory lesson for those who are starting out. Venue: Treadwells, 33 Store Street, Bloomsbury, London WC1E 7BS. Sunday, 29 July; Anderida Gorsedd Lughnasadh open ritual at the Long Man of Wilmington, Sussex. Meet near the car park between 1.30pm and 2pm for a walk up to the chalk hill figure at 2pm. Afterwards back to the Giants Rest pub in Wilmington for a social drink together.

Monday 30 July; The Mystery Experience - A Revolutionary Approach to Spiritual Awakening. Talk by philosopher Timothy Freke at Alternatives, St James's Church, 197 Piccadilly, London, W1J 9LL. Wednesday 1 August; Fruition meditation at Chalice Well to celebrate time of ripening and the gathering of the first fruits in the Wheel of the Year. Thursday 2 August; PF London Open Ritual for Lammas with Bacchus Border Morris. Venue: Conway Hall, Red Lion Square, London. Admission £5 for PF member, £6 for all others. Sunday 5 August; Pagan Pride in Nottingham. Huge free festival to celebrate Pagan diversity starting at 10.30am in Nottingham Market Square with a procession through Nottingham City Centre to the City Arboretum where from noon to 6pm there will be a free Pagan festival of live music, speakers, stalls and activities for the young and old as well as a real ale bar. A train journey away from London, but well worth attending.
