Magic School: Carl Jung - Thought and Practice

UPDATE 14 FEB: The date of the first lecture in this series has changed from 6 Feb to 20 Feb due to the tube strike, so if you thought you had missed the first lecture, you haven't. The course now runs on 20th Marth, 6th March, 20th March and 3rd April. All other details are as stated below:

Starting in February, lecturer on esoteric subjects Ken Rees will be presenting a four-session evening class course on the great psychoanalyst, Carl Gustav Jung. Spaced over eight weeks, it will be held at the headquarters of the Theosophical Society, 50 Gloucester Place, London W1U 8EA.

The course title is Carl Jung: The Roots of his Thought and Practice. It begins on Thursday 6 February and runs from 7pm to 9pm. The next classes are on 20 February, 6 March and 20 March. The cost per meeting is £7, Concessions £5, TS members £4.

Here is the course description:

The Swiss psychologist, C.G. Jung was basically a child of his time in respect to European culture, society and philosophical thought. In this short four session course of lectures and discussion we will explore questions like – what was Jung's own psychological make-up? Why did he have a breakdown and with what outcomes? What are the origins of his ideas regarding the archetypes i.e. the anima, animus, shadow, psyche and so on?

Can he be called a scientist, an artist, a mystic or even all of these at once?

How significant was alchemy for him as e.g. a model for his concept of individuation? Did God equal the Self for Jung and did he see himself as some kind of messiah figure as some of his critics have claimed?

These issues will be addressed and an overview of some of the key themes in his thinking provided. We will conclude with an overall evaluation of his contribution to individual healing, society and spirituality, particularly in a New Age context.

Ken Rees has lectured extensively in the field of esoteric traditions and the history of ideas for a variety of academic institutions over the last 30 years. He has also facilitated numerous workshops during this time. By background he is a sociologist of religion and adult educationalist.
