Occult London: Amulets & Charms at the Wellcome

You might be surprised to learn that the Wellcome Collection, which is part of an organisation that supports science to solve urgent health challenges, also has a large collection of amulets, charms and other magical objects. What's more, the museum and library encourages people to challenge preconceptions about health and wellbeing.

I took the photo of amulets, charms and votives there last September, at an event about magical objects associated with luck, protection and healing. Many of the items on display were collected by London folklorist Edward Lovett in the early 20th century.

The Wellcome Collection is running a similar event tomorrow, Friday, 22 March. It's called Charmed -  Amulet Takoever Day. The programme of talks, displays and workshops for adults and children  is completely free. Just drop in any time from 11am until 5pm, you don't need tickets. I'll be running a crafting workshop to make a Brigid's cross or a corn dolly in the afternoon. You can find out more here: https://wellcomecollection.org/events/ZcNj2RAAAB8AJsFC

The Wellcome Collection is at 183 Euston Road, London NW1 2BE.
