Green London: Smelling Roses at Winsford Gardens

Here's another green London post about my home patch: Winsford Gardens in SE20. I was walking past the gates on my way to a shop the other day and accepted the invitation to come in and smell the roses. They were, indeed, in perfect bloom and their scent was wonderful.

The gardens were once private, but were given to London Borough of Bromley as a public park in the 1970s. An active group of local residents currently manage the gardens and keep them in wonderful shape, as you can see from the photo at the bottom.

There's a lovely rosarium, areas planted with bee-friendly flowers, benches in the shade of mature trees and winding paths to stroll around and enjoy the atmosphere. It's usually tranquil because the gardens are a hidden gem. While nearby Crystal Palace Park and even Betts Park are well-frequented, you can often find yourself completely alone in Winsford Gardens. It's a perfect spot to sit and meditate or contemplate the beauty of nature within the city.

You can find out more about Winsford Gardens on the Penge Heritage Trail site: https://www.pengeheritagetrail.org.uk/the-trail-sites/winsford-gardens/

I've been blogging about green London over the past year to show the city and suburbs are places where nature thrives as well as where people live and work. I started doing this after several conversations with fellow pagans who believe  London is all concrete. It most certainly isn't.
