These days the town is a holiday resort famous for its long sandy beaches, maritime activities, entertainment, and lovely surrounding countryside. However, historically it was the site of infamous witch trials.
In 1645 Matthew Hopkins, the self-styled Witchfinder General, accused 11 people of practicing magic. They were tried before a court in the town's medieval Tolhouse, which was also its jail. Five women - Alice Clisswell, Bridgetta Howard, Maria Blackborne, Elizabeth Dudgeon and Elizabeth Bradwell - were found guilty and were hanged. The Tolhouse is now a museum with exhibits relating to this terrible era of the past.
Wizards Crone guest house is one of a series of guest houses and hotels run under a not-for-profit community interest company, Inclusive Response. These are SEN friendly spaces for people to stay for support on short breaks if needed. It supports hidden needs.
Kerry Wood is the person behind the project. Kerry said: "It was a risk, but I redesigned Wizards Crone as a place for the community to stay as we are on the Great Yarmouth Witch Trail, and the Victorian buildings are alive with spirits. Another is the Hotel of Wizardry two doors up. They both need to be filled with like-minded folk who want to keep these buildings alive."
This is a wonderful time for an autumn break in a town steeped in history, and what could be better than staying somewhere that's pagan-friendly with a witchy and wizardly theme.
Wizards Crone is at 13 Trafalgar Road, Great Yarmouth. For details of prices and availability call 07958 382073. The Hotel of Wizardry is at 15 Trafalgar Road. Tel: 07958 382073.

Having stayed twice now at Wizards Crone, I can highly recommend this place. The second time we had a chance to experience the food too and it was exquisite. Staff are very friendly and always on hand to help if need be. Looking forward to booking again for 2025.
