Pagan Eye: Horse Brasses in a South London Shop

I spotted these horse brasses in a local charity shop. This was a relatively unusual thing for me to see, as I live in a non-posh part of suburban south London where few people are likely to own horses. I photographed them to put a picture on my blog because they intrigued me. I didn't buy them, although I was tempted.

I understand there's a lot of folklore and history surrounding brasses. My limited knowledge is that originally horse brasses were used as amulets to ward off bad luck or evil spirits. Over time they also became status symbols, indications of trades, or have cultural significance. Nowadays most are simply decorative. Only genuine rare ones are valuable.

However, I'm sure some readers of my blog know more about horse brasses and their magical or folkloric meaning and symbolism than I do. I'd welcome more information, so please leave a comment if you want to.

My Pagan Eye posts show photos that I find interesting - seasonal images, pagan sites, events, or just pretty pictures. If you want to send me a photo for a Pagan Eye post, please email it to badwitch1234@gmail.com Let me know what the photo shows and whether you want your name mentioned or not. For copyright reasons, the photo must be one you have taken yourself.
