Pagan Eye: Flower Crab Spider Hunting on Lavender

Lavender is in full bloom in my garden early this year, so I got my phone to take a picture. When I looked closer, I spotted this little yellow spider that had caught a bee. It reminded me all the cycles of life exist within nature. For many creatures that includes hunting to eat. I felt sad that the bee had been killed, but that's what this little spider has to do.

I did a bit of online research and believe I've identified the arachnid as a flower crab spider. They don't build webs, but instead lurk in flowers and grab bees, moths and other insects that land there, using pincer-like legs. They inject their prey with poison that dissolves the innards for consumption. That's pretty gross, isn't it? But death like this is part of nature in the cycle of life and the wheel of the year.

I'm not posting this as some sort of advertisement saying humans must hunt or eat meat. Personally,  I believe our modern meat-farming industry is awful and is bad for the environment too, but I also understand that this little spider doesn't have the choices humans have over their diet.

On each of my Pagan Eye posts, I show a photo that I find interesting, with a few words about it. If you want to send me a photo for a Pagan Eye post, please email it to badwitch1234@gmail.com Let me know what the photo shows and whether you want your name mentioned or not. For copyright reasons, the photo must be one you have taken yourself and you must confirm that you are submitting it for A Bad Witch's Blog.
