The Fairytale Tarot

Someone has just sent me the details of a lovely tarot deck called The Fairytale Tarot. Although the deck has been out for a couple of years, I had never seen it before.

The cards have drawings from fairytales done in a traditional central European style by Czech artist Irena Triskova and Russian artist Alex Ukolov. Some of the images are from famous stories such as Hansel and Gretel and Cinderella and some are from less well-known tales such as Sivka-Burka and Tatterhood.

Fairytales are resonant with symbolism, so are perfect for tarot images. The cards seem to rely less on numbers than more traditional decks and more on the tales and pictures.

Some of the interpretations seem obvious - Beauty and the Beast as Strength, The Red Shoes as the Devil, for example. However, some seem a little unusual to me - The Snow Queen as the Chariot strikes me as an interesting interpretation of the story and of the card.

Not only do I love fairytales, I am sure the cards would wonderful to use for readings and I am now keen to get a deck. I will certainly be adding it to my wishlist.

You can view the Fairytale Tarot on Amazon.

There is a boxed set that contains a companion book with the deck, also called The Fairytale Tarot, which costs about £19.99.

Bags are also available to match the deck, and one of these is pictured top left.
