Back to Magic School: Shamanism

There seems to be a growing interest in shamanism. Luckily, there are some great courses teaching shamanic techniques and also some good books on the subject.

Adventures in Shamanism is an eight-week Monday evening course offering a comprehensive introduction to the worlds of the shaman.

It aims to help students discover where and why shamans go when they "journey"; learn how to journey and meet spirit helpers and power animals themselves; explore the history and traditions of shamanism; discover how the shaman works with song and dance and with the spirits of nature and with power, to heal and renew.

The course runs from October 5 to November 23 on Monday evenings from 6.45pm to 9.30pm at The Open Centre, London EC1V. Bookings made before Sept 1 are £150, after this date are £165. Students, senior citizens, disabled and unwaged qualify for the concessionary rate of £125. A 50% deposit is required to secure a place.

For further details or to book, call 07847 894453, or email info@shaman.uk.net. Facilitated by Shaman UK http://www.shaman.uk.net/

City Lit is running a one-day course called Personal Development - Shamanism and Self-development on 13 March 2010.

The day aims to introduces the core principles of shamanism, which comprises a range of traditional beliefs and practices concerned with communication with the spirit world. The teacher will talk about the shamanic journey, the role of the arts in shamanism, soul retrieval and how caring professionals can learn from this ancient wisdom.

The course costs £41 and takes place at City Lit, Keeley Street, Covent Garden, Camden, London WC2B 4BA. For details, visit http://www.citylit.ac.uk/

If you don't live near either of those courses, or prefer to learn from books, Shamanism for Beginners: Walking with the World's Healers of Earth and Sky by James Endredy came out this summer. It is published by Llewellyn and can be bought through Amazon. Another great book on the subject is Animal Spirit Guides, which I reviewed on A Bad Witches Blog earlier this year.
