The BBC News England website is featuring a slideshow of pictures by folklore photographer Sara Hannant, under the title: In pictures: A journey through the English ritual year
Sara Hannant, the author of the book Mummers, Maypoles and Milkmaids, has become famous for travelling around England photographing seasonal celebrations old and new. The pictures on the BBC website show such events as the Abbots Bromley Horn Dance, Hastings Jack-in-the-Green parade, Eastbourne Lammas Festival, London's Twelfth Night celebrations on Bankside and the Mazey Day midsummer festival in Penzance, Cornwall.
As Sara is quoted as saying, "Many of these customs have a distinct pagan element." They do indeed.

An exhibition of photographs from Mummers, Maypoles and Milkmaids is on until 28 July at the Oxfordshire Museum, County Hall, New Road, Oxford OX1 1ND.
