Any Ideas What this Little Wooden Cauldron is For?

I bought this little cauldron in a charity shop for £1. I couldn't resist it really. But, I have no idea what it is meant to be for.

It is just over four inches high, made of a dark wood and has a lid and three legs.

Being wood, I don't think it would be much good as a tea-light holder.

I wondered if it might be a mortar, but it didn't come with a pestle and if you pressed too hard then the legs would be likely to break, I suspect.

I think that a condiment or mustard pot would come with a glass or ceramic liner rather than just be made of wood. Also, the lid would have a little hole for a spoon to go in, and it doesn't.

My best guess is that it is could be just an ornamental pot for putting trinkets in, but I wondered if anyone else had any ideas.

If you think you know what it is meant for - or what it could be used for, do leave a comment.

Salt pot. Salt used to be very expensive so you would display your salt. You sprinkle salt with your fingers so wouldn't need a spoon etc.

Could be a practice piece that someone did in a woodwork class.

Looks like an ink well to me. At one time it may have had a brass lining to contain the ink for a fountain pen.

Thanks for the suggestions. The comments here and on my facebook page make me think it might be a salt pot. It doesn't have any ink stains, so I don't think it was used for ink.
