I'm at a Book Festival - Here's My Magical Titles

I'm really proud to be one of the featured authors appearing at Beckenham Book Festival 2023, this Sunday, 2nd July. Along with a dozen or so other authors, I'll be giving a short talk and I'll also have a stall. The event's in the grounds of a nice pub, so if you're in the area you can just pop in, have a drink, and say hi. You don't need to buy any books but you're welcome to browse and listen to the talks, storytelling and other events that are taking place, including a raffle and a quiz with a prize.

As I was sorting out a pile of my books to take along, I thought it might be a good idea to blog about the various things I've written on on practical magic and witchcraft. It's been a while since I've done a catalogue of all the titles, most of them in the Pagan Portals series published by Moon Books

Here's the list:

Candle Magic

This was the first Pagan Portals book I wrote. It came out in 2016 and has become a best-seller. Here's a bit of the blurb:

"Candle spells are among the easiest yet also the most effective to perform. They are perfect for anyone who wants to have a go at casting a spell for the first time and for the solitary witch with a busy life. Yet candles are also an important part of modern pagan witchcraft rituals. They are used to mark the quarters of the circle, placed on the altar and can represent the changing seasons of the year. This book is aimed at all who want to use candle magic, from beginners to those experienced in the craft."

Poppets and Magical Dolls

This has also sold steadily since it was published in 2018. Here's a description:

"Poppets are dolls used for sympathetic magic, and are designed in the likeness of individuals in order to represent them in spells to help, heal or harm. The word poppet comes from the Middle Ages in England, originally meaning a small doll or child, and it is still in use today as a name of endearment. The term is older than the phrase ‘Voodoo doll’. Pagan Portals – Poppets and Magical Dolls explores the history of poppets and offers a practical guide to making and using them in modern witchcraft."

Guided Visualisations

In 2020 Moon Books published Pagan Portals - Guided Visualisations. Here's the synopsis:

"Guided visualisations use an interactive story to help people know themselves better, find solutions to problems and get ideas for creative projects. They can also be used as a wellbeing tool using relaxation techniques. Many guided visualisations also have spiritual aspects. Within this book are visualisations created for those on the paths of paganism, witchcraft and earth-based spirituality. They were written to follow the Wheel of the Year, embrace the power of the moon and the elements, and develop magical wisdom."

Scrying

Scrying is the practice of looking into crystal balls, mirrors, water, fire, clouds and many other things to see visions, find messages and gain knowledge. Pagan Portals - Scrying came out in 2022. Here's more about it:

"Scrying...can be done for personal guidance, for inspiration, to find the answers to questions, to look at distant places or other realms, or for fortune-telling and prophecy. It is a form of divination that taps into our psychic senses and powers of intuition. Pagan Portals - Scrying shows how anyone can learn to develop the necessary skills to scry in a variety of different ways."

Rounding the Wheel of the Year

People going to Beckenham Book Festival will be among the first to have a chance to buy copies of Pagan Portals - Rounding the Wheel of the Year. It isn't officially published until September, but I'll have a few early copies on sale on my stall. You can also pre-order it online, the picture to the right should go to where you can view it on Amazon. The book covers the history behind some much-loved folklore and modern pagan customs, including practical suggestions for celebrating the turning of the year. Here's a bit more about it:

"Every month is full of magic, each day has its own energy, and the seasons rotate as part of the cycles of nature. Pagan Portals - Rounding the Wheel of the Year looks at ways to honour each month with folkloric customs, herb and plant lore, traditional crafts, spells, visualisations, and pagan rites that go beyond the eight pagan festivals of Imbolc, Spring Equinox, Beltane, Summer Solstice, Lammas, Autumn Equinox, Samhain, and Winter Solstice."

Erosion - A Gothic Novel

My first novel is set to come out next spring, and I've been really lucky in that Ben Aaronovitch, author of the Rivers of London books, has endorsed it with a quote on the front cover. I don't have any to sell in person at the moment, but you will be able to see my author preview copy at the festival. It can also be pre-ordered via publisher Moon Books' website and through regular booksellers. Here's the blurb:

'''It all began when we found the bones…' This is the start of Erosion, a gothic novel set on the English coast, in 1987, the year of the Great Storm. Violent weather is but one of the problems a group of friends face when they discover an ancient grave inside a crumbling cliff and decide to unearth a skull. Supernatural mystery intertwines with the problems of human relationships, of earning money, of following dreams.

"Alison wants to spend a glorious summer writing her novel, Asher wants to wow audiences with his comedy routines, Zoe wants to make a living as an artist, Jo wants to make the world a better place and Baz just wants to help his friends succeed, but the events that happen change all their plans. Death and destruction test the bonds of friendship, yet moments of beauty entwine with scenes of horror as a magical summer becomes an autumn of devastation."

By the way, the cover art is by Kent artist Su Jolly.

More About Beckenham Book Festival

This annual literary event showcases authors who live in or near Beckenham on the border of south east London and Kent. I'll have a stall at the festival where you can come and chat with me and see my books and I'll also be giving a short talk on witchcraft at 1.30pm.

Other authors from Beckenham and the surrounding areas will also be there. There'll be short presentations throughout the event and a children’s story time.

Beckenham Book Festival 2023 is at The Coach and Horses, Burnhill Rd, Beckenham BR3 3LA. Entry is completely free. It runs from 1pm until 6pm.

Plant Folklore and Magic: Herb-Robert in my Garden

Here's some Herb-Robert growing in a shady corner of my garden next to a little wall. It's a common wildflower in England, with tiny pink flowers and fern-like leaves. Bees and moths love it, but it also has heaps of uses in folk medicine and folk magic.

In many ways it's a plant of contradictions, because although some insects are attracted to the flowers, it has traditionally been used as a bug repellent. People crushed the leaves and rubbed them on their skin. As it smells rather unpleasant I'd probably only do that as a last resort. It's sometimes called Stinking Bob. Herbalists have used it for various other things too, including as an antiseptic.

The Latin name is Geranium robertianium. One theory about the more common term is that it was associated with Robin Goodfellow, a trickster spirit or fairy from English folklore. The herb's also sometimes called Red Robin, which links even more to the mischievous character. Others say the original Robert was an 11th-century herbalist monk who used the plant for healing.

Herb-Robert has another, more ominous common name: death-come-quickly. This is a bit odd because the plant isn't toxic and generally has magical associations with good luck and fertility spells. However, in some places it was thought to be unlucky to bring it indoors. So, if you have it in your garden just leave a shady corner for it to grow in and naturally bless you with good luck and the bees with nectar.

The photo at the top doesn't really do the colour of the flowers justice and the photo at the side is a bit out of focus. I struggled to get a good picture with the camera on my phone because the flower really is very tiny. Yeah, I should have got out my digital SLR, I know.

Pagan Eye: Ribbon of Wildflowers in Crystal Palace Park

I photographed this winding ribbon of wildflowers in Crystal Palace Park on my way home from a summer solstice celebration with a group of druids last weekend. It was lovely to see that the park is letting grass grow long in many places and planting flowers that bees and butterflies love.

On each of my Pagan Eye posts, I show a photo that I find interesting, with a few words about it. If you want to send me a photo for a Pagan Eye post, please email it to badwitch1234@gmail.com Let me know what the photo shows and whether you want your name mentioned or not. For copyright reasons, the photo must be one you have taken yourself and you must confirm that you are submitting it for A Bad Witch's Blog.

Book Extract: The Healed State by Christianne Wolff

Here's an extract from a new book The Healed State by Christianne Wolff, which is a guide to well-being. The whole book is about healing mind, body, soul, relationships and the environment. This section is on forces that heal.

Another reason why nature is just so good for us is because we share the same microbiome!

Microbiome is the home of a community of microorganisms which are fungi, bacteria and viruses and live in many environments around us including water, soil and the air. These microbes also live within us mainly within our skin, vagina and gastrointestinal tract. Our body is home to trillions of these microbial cells.

We ingest about a million microbes in every gram of food and what we eat directly impacts whether our gut microbiome thrives, survives or dies.

Your microbiome within your gut controls the storage of fat and helps with breaking down toxins and absorbing nutrients. They also replenish the gut lining, skin and replace damage and dying cells.

They also fight the bad bacteria.

Junk food, alcohol, high fatty foods, sugar, antibiotics, stress, lack of sleep and illness all detrimentally affect the health of our microbiome.

Interestingly some of your good bacteria are affected by poor sleep because they have their own time for working, some when you are asleep and some when you are awake, and run on a regular clockwork. So people who do shift work, people with insomnia or people who travel a lot and get jet lag could be affected with the health of their  microbiome.

To help replace good bacteria and improve your micro biome you can take pro-biotics in tablet form- these are particularly useful after taking antibiotics which can kill both your good and bad bacteria.

You can also consume pro-biotic foods which can help improve digestion, reduce depression, improve skin and promote heart health. These foods contain live bacteria that stay live when we eat them.

Good forms of pro-biotic foods are...

  • Kefir
  • Kombucha
  • Sauerkraut
  • Live yogurt
  • Tempeh
  • Kimchi
  • Miso
  • Pickles

Equally foods high in fibre (most plant based foods ), particularly foods high in polyphenol compounds, help to boost the health, diversity and vitality of your microbiome.

Polyphenols and high fibre are food for your good bacteria, this is known as pre-biotic foods and the more varied your diet is in these foods the more varied the good bacteria, because different good bacteria like different polyphenols foods. The more varied your good bacteria, the healthier your gut.

The best foods for polyphenols are

  • Raw cacao powder
  • Pomegranate
  • Berries
  • Flaxseed
  • Almonds
  • Olives
  • Beans
  • Spinach
  • Red onion
  • Herbs

So a very simple way of ensuring you feed your good bacteria daily, is having plants ( vegetables, fruit, herbs, beans, nuts ) and one food high in Polyphenol food at each sitting.

Microbiome also lives within your home and with in your pets, going to other peoples houses and being around plants and pets gives your body a good variety to chose from.

The more diverse your microbiome the better the balance - we get this balance through a varied diet and being around different plants, people and pets.

Having a diverse microbiome also helps with your immunity, blood sugar levels and appetite.

Exercise can also improve your gut microbiome and exercising outside, even better!

The microbiome in soil is also closely related to the microbiome in your gut, and even just getting green fingers, allowing your hands to submerge into the soil has been proven to be healing for the body.

The Human Microbiome project is a huge study funded by the National Institute of Health from 2007 to 2016 and was instrumental in making a connection between the soil microbiome and the gut microbiome. The HMP discovered that  the soil and the gut contains a similar amount of active microorganisms. The health of our gut is not only about the fibre we eat but the soil those plants that contain the fibre were grown in.

Amazingly still there is also a connection between the human and ocean microbiome sharing 73% microbes. Half of the earths oxygen is produced by the microbiome of the ocean.

Christianne Wolff is an award-winning author with a passion for healing and mentoring. With over 30 years of experience, she has guided individuals worldwide through her healing retreats and online memberships.

Occult London: Crystal Wicca - A Lovely Shop in Hayes

A sparkling new estoeric shop recently opened on the border of South East London: Crystal Wicca in Hayes, Kent. It mainly sells crystals, as you might expect from the name, but also stocks tarot and oracle decks, candle holders, incense, jewellery and other witchy wares. I popped along to have a look and took the photos you can see on this post.

The shop's run by Hannah Jones, who is an accredited  healer with the British Academy of Crystal Healing. She's full of knowledge and enthusiasm about the things she sells and her wellbeing services. On her website she wrote:

"All of my crystals are ethically sourced and of the highest standard. I work with small businesses like myself so I know exactly where each piece is sourced. I always pick pieces that I am personally drawn to and I hope that in turn you will enjoy their beauty and healing properties as much as I do. I cleanse and charge each crystal before they are sent to their new homes, ready for you to work with them for your highest good."

Crystal Wicca is beautifully set out and has a large workshop area as well as the main shop. Recent events there have included a Reiki infused sound bath evening and a talk on palmistry with guest practitoners. It's really easy to get to as it's right next to Hayes train station.

The full address is 4a Station Buildings, Station Approach, Hayes, Kent BR2 7EN. You can find the shop's website here: https://crystalwicca.co.uk/
