August is a traditional month to make rowan charms, which can be crosses of rowan twigs bound with red wool, or can be rowan berries strung on red thread, or can be a combination of the two. I've noticed that berries were appearing on rowans and other trees a little early this year.
Apparently the best day to make rowan charms is St Helen's Feast Day on August 18th. If you wanted to do that, you could start to plan and get the ingredients ahead of time.
I blogged about how to make a rowan cross earlier this year, but I'm blogging about it again because I had an odd dream in which the words below came to me as a rhyme to say while making a rowan charm:
Bind the charm with red threadFeel free to use the words if you would like to make your own charm for your personal use. You can also find more seasonal magic in my book Pagan Portals - Rounding the Wheel of the Year, which you can view on Amazon.
And hang it from the door
So ghosts and ghouls
and monstrous things
Can come here nevermore.
