"Plantain was called waybroad in ancient texts, because of its ability to grow in tightly packed soil by trails, roadsides, fields, and meadows. Originally native to north/central Asia and many places throughout Europe. The Latin name translates to sole of the foot due to it being found along the roadside. It was even worn on the inside of the shoe on the sole to prevent weariness while traveling.
"There are around two hundred species of the plant with just as many uses. The colonists brought plantain over to North America and it was introduced to the Native American people, who observed the way it grew and called it white man’s foot. They, like the people of the plant’s origin, realized the culinary and healing benefits plantain offered. The young leaves and seeds were included in their diet as well as used in pulses to help heal war wounds, soothe rheumatic pain, and draw out snake bites."
