Craft: A Yule Wreath From Natural Materials

Wreaths seem to be a trendy Yuletide decoration this year. I've also seen lots of expensive workshops on how to make them being advertised. I made the wreath in the photo completely for free from natural vines, leaves and berries I picked in my own garden and from my neighbour's hedge.

I didn't even pay for the base. I've found it's really easy to make bases using honeysuckle. I picked long vines, stripped the leaves, then wrapped them round and round to form a circle of many strands. I tucked the ends in so nothing unravels.

To dress the base, I picked winter foliage, ivy and berries. I tucked the stalks into the base, then wrapped ivy around everything to hold it more firmly in place, tucking the ivy ends in as well. The wreath is now hanging from my front door. I used natural garden twine for that.

I should probably mention that if you are going to pick holly, remember it is very sharp. Wear gardening gloves to avoid being pricked.

There are more ideas for seasonal activities in my book Pagan Portals - Rounding the Wheel of the Year, published by Moon Books. Copies can be found at Treadwell's bookshop at 33 Store Street, Bloomsbury, London, or online at Amazon.
