Grimoires: The Bad Witch's Book of the Year

Last Friday I opened a poll to find The Bad Witch's Book of the Year from a list of new books I had reviewed on A Bad Witch's Blog in 2009.

The poll closed has just closed - and the winner, with 31% of the votes, is Grimoires: A History of Magic Books by Owen Davies, professor of social history at the University of Hertfordshire.

I'm not surprised Grimoires got the most votes. It not only shows a superb amount of research into books of conjurations, charms and spells from ancient times to the 21st Century, but it is also very well written. Grimoires should appeal to anyone interested in history as well as magicians, witches and pagans.

It well deserves its title of The Bad Witch's Book of the Year.

In second place is The Book of English Magic by Philip Carr-Gomm and Richard Heygate, with 25% of the votes. In some ways this is another history book - about magical traditions and practitioners of magic in England. But it is also a manual of instruction on how to do everything from dowsing to the first stages of making a Philosopher's Stone and is a delight to read.

Tied in third place are Animal Spirit Guides by Chris Lüttichau and The Crystal Bible V2 by Judy Hall. They both got 12% of the votes.
Animal Spirit Guides shows how people can find their power animal through dreams and drum journeys - the traditional rituals of the shaman. The Crystal Bible Volume 2 is a companion volume to The Crystal Bible and details of more than 200 new crystals and how they can be used for healing and psychic work.

I also feel I have to give an honourable mention to Crystal Chakra Healing by Philip Permutt because, although I mentioned it on my posting about The Bad Witch's Book of the Year, I accidentally missed it from the poll, meaning no one could vote for it. By the time I realised my mistake it was too late to change the poll categories. Crystal Chakra Healing is a lovely book about the properties and benefits of crystals and how to use them with the body's chakra points to promote healing. I would recommend it to anyone wanting to learn about this subject.

Although the winning books gained the most votes, I can honestly say that I have enjoyed reading all the books I have reviewed this year and would recommend them.
