Last week, someone emailed me to ask “I need help finding a missing item. It is very important. Can you help me?”We all lose things from time to time and it can be very upsetting, even if the item only has sentimental value. But if what you have lost is your laptop with all your work on it, the repercussions can be disastrous.
It is very easy to forget to insure your stuff or back up your files. Even if you have taken these precautions, a loss can still be very annoying.
If you have lost something, you should obviously try practical ways of finding your item before resorting to magic. Search everywhere it is likely to be, ask people who may have seen it, contact your service provider if you have lost something like a mobile phone, check lost property departments and tell the police if you think it might have been stolen.
But magic can help you find lost things – and there are many different ways of doing this.
Dowsing
Dowsing - sometimes called divining - is one of the best known magical means of locating things that are hidden. It is most often used to find sources of water below the ground, but you can use the same techniques to find mislaid or hidden objects.
It is done with a handheld instrument such as a forked hazel twig, a set of metal rods or a pendulum. To use a pendulum to dowse for something, hold it by its chain or cord and concentrate on the thing you are looking for. The pendulum should start swinging in the direction you need to go.
You can triangulate by using the pendulum in several places and seeing where the lines it points to converge.
If you are using the pendulum over or close to the thing you want to find, it might go round in a circle rather than swing backwards and forwards.
Spells
Candle spells can easily be used to help you recover lost items. You can either cast a spell to try to reveal the location of something that is hidden or concealed, or you can try to attract the item to you.
The nice thing about candle magic is that all you really need is a candle. You either inscribe your wish on the candle, or concentrate very hard on your wish, then light the candle and concentrate on sending the wish into the flame.
Ideally, you should let the candle burn down completely to be fully effective. As it is dangerous to leave candles unattended, you might want to use a small candle for your spell or else burn the candle for a while every evening before you go to bed, repeating your wish.
If you want, you can place a small lodestone or magnet at the base of your candle if you are casting a spell to attract things, or place the candle on or in front of a mirror to reveal hidden things.
Scrying
Scrying is the witch's traditional method of finding the answers to questions and seeking hidden knowledge as well as looking into the future. It can also be used to find lost things. Crystal balls and dark mirrors are best for this kind of scrying, but it does take a little practice to learn the art.If you don't own a crystal ball or dark mirror, you can use a simple bowl of water. Fill a bowl or cauldron nearly to the top with water. Dim the lights and stare into the bowl, then ask it to reveal to you the location of what you are looking for. After a while you should start to see shapes and images, which could offer clues to help you find your lost item.
Last resort
If you have searched everywhere and tried everything and still can't find your lost item, you will probably have to consider getting a replacement. However, doing that might be just the trick to help you find the one you lost. Maybe it is just coincidence, but the number of times I have held out on replacing something because I am sure the old one would turn up sooner or later, only to find it does reappear just as I've forked out to buy a new one.
Blame it on the mischevious fairy folk - that's what I do.

For those who have lost items like laptops or cameras, do try posting up a reward notice in case anyone has found it and will hand it back for the reward. Also, in my spell list on my blog there is a talisman to help recover a stolen laptop. That would be suitable if you are missing other electronic items as well.
Is there a locator spell for people? My friend has been missing for more than a year and I haven't found anyone who has heard from her. I just want to know if she is alive and ok. don't want to get anyone involved. She had some issues with her ex and family. Ex damn near killed her but she survived. I used to be eclectic pagan but have become more of a skeptic with correlation != to causation in recent years, which may affect my "success" in doing any of these spells now. I gave my dad pieces of my laptop to keep safe while we are remodeling and he claims I didn't give him the hard drive. I have a hoarder house of junk from 3 people (including him and myself) and he's carelessly thrown away bags I had packed that were not trash. Plus having a lot of indoor outdoor cats that like to knock everything over. I've been tearing the place apart to find this tiny laptop HDD but am probably looking at it and not seeing it on a count of the mess. I'm just too overwhelmed to clean and organize the entire house especially if he actually does have it lost in his own room or it got trashed. Try burning either a brown or the saint anthony novina candles, he is a saint and finds objects...try putting some "come to me" oil on the candle and say "dear saint anthony, please come around, somthings lost and cannot be found" say it 3 times, and also if you have a lodestone, put it near the candle. i dont want to sound rude about some of these comments on here but damn maybe you should start a spell casting service for people who have had their shit stolen lol. on a serious note tho what would you recommend to enable one to find a dead cat mine has walked off on his final walk and i have been unable to find his body, iv been trying to find him on the astral plane and or in the dreamtime unsuccessfully. iv also used datura a few times in hopes of being shown the way to no avail yet. is there a technique to make my visions more clear
Sorry if my comments about not running a spellcasting services upset anyone, but it simply isn't something I do. I run workshops and write books teaching people how to do magic for themselves - and I hope my blog posts also help people in that way. I'm not really in favour of paid-for witchcraft services run online or over the phone - most of them are scams and I don't wish to be part of that. I've no problem with the old tradition of the village wisewoman who people visited in person to help them find their lost things, but it's a bit different when it is a local tradesperson who you know and trust. I also don't have time to run a spellcasting services. Writing my blog every day, writing books and running workshops - along with currently doing an MA course - take up a huge amount of my time.
Regarding searching for a cat who has passed on, do you necessarily want the body or do you want to contact the spirit? If it is the body, and your cat was microchipped (or perhaps wearing a collar), then you should be able to find out if the body has been taken to a vet or picked up by the local authorities as the microchip company will be notified. Details on collars might also be recorded. If you want to contact your cat's spirit, then I would suggest scrying using a crystal ball or bowl of water.

Hello. I have lost something very close to my heart. It was a bohemian vintage garnet cross, that belonged to my great grandmother. I wore it daily for months since the day of my grandmother's funeral 2 years ago. My father gave me to me the day of her funeral. The thing is...I know I took it off...and I am almost positive I put it away. I could be wrong though. My mind wanders sometimes. I lost a small charm from an empath spell. Usually I have it on a necklace, but yesterday after showering I put it into my pocket and now I can't find it anywhere.
