In a feature called The State of the Occult: 2013, website Reality Sandwich asked two occult scholars, Richard Smoley and Mitch Horowitz, to discuss the current state of mysticism in America.
It is a very long article, but interesting. Smoley and Horowitz basically agree that the occult, the supernatural and new age spiritual beliefs are becoming mainstream. Some things, like the idea that a positive mental attitude can help you succeed, are so much a part of mass culture that they are no longer considered esoteric.
