Pagan Eye: Dolls of Remembrance

While Remembrance Sunday is this week, commemorating those who died in war, earlier this month I took part in an act of remembrance for those women and men who were persecuted during the European witch hunts of the Middle Ages. The photo above show dolls made from scraps of red material in their memory.

Denise Rowe, who was performing at Magic Late at the Horniman Museum last month, is inviting people to make simple dolls from scraps of red fabric in honour of those who were killed after being accused of witchcraft. The dolls will be installed in the landscape when Denise has collected at least a million of them.

I made a doll at the Horniman Museum and added it to others that people were making on the night, and then made more at a Samhain gathering with my coven. The picture shows the dolls made on 31 October, which I will be sending on to Denise.

If you would like to take part too, here is how to make a doll:

Take a roughly hand/palm sized piece of fabric, ideally in shades of red. Gather her up in the middle and tie a strip of fabric, ribbon, wool etc around her. Add a loop to suspend her from a tree.

Send completed dolls to Denise Rowe, 9 Elderberry Close, Stourbridge, DY8 3JN. You can contact Denise at helloearthdances@gmail.com or visit the website

My Pagan Eye posts show photos that I find interesting - seasonal images, pagan sites, events, or just pretty pictures.

If you want to send me a photo for a Pagan Eye post, please email it to badwitch1234@gmail.com Let me know what the photo shows and whether you want your name mentioned or not. For copyright reasons, the photo must be one you have taken yourself.
