Craft: I Upcycled My Sofa into a Drum Bag

I made this drum bag out of fabric that once covered my sofa. I'm rather pleased with it - and it cost me precisely nothing!

A few months ago I went to a great shamanic drum birthing workshop, but decided not to pay extra for a case to put my drum in. I wanted to wait for the right fabric to present itself and then make my own.

That happened when my favourite sofa collapsed one evening, just as my husband and I were sitting down to watch a movie on Netflix.

Of course I was somewhat miffed at my couch choosing precisely that moment to go up to the great sofa spirit in the sky. However, I had the inspiration to reuse the fabric before taking the broken frame to the tip. Multi-coloured patchwork animal print might not be everyone's taste, but I loved it and I wasn't going to let it go to waste.

I measured my drum and made a pattern for the bag, cut the fabric off the sofa, then cut out the pieces I needed from that. A couple of hours with the sewing machine later, I had finished my drum bag. I made a little pouch for the drum stick too.

The photo at the bottom shows my old cats, Frank and Jerry, enjoying my sofa when it was new. The upcycled bag might not be made as professionally as one I bought off the shelf, but it will always bring back happy memories as well as protect my drum.
