Crafts: First Attempts Don't Have to be Perfect

I had a go at throwing a pot on a wheel for the first time. It was something I'd wanted to do for ages, and I took advantage of a special offer at Token Studio near London Bridge. The art studio offers a range of taster-style crafting events, including a 90-minute workshop to make and decorate a pot.

The picture at the top shows my work still on the wheel. After I painted it, I left it at the studio to be glazed and fired. The picture at the bottom is the finished product. I know my handiwork isn't perfect. Part of me wishes it was. The edge has got a bit squashed and I applied the paint unevenly.

I have reminded myself first attempts don't have to be perfect. Few people master a skill quickly, and we all have to start somewhere. With practice and extra lessons, I'm sure I could make a bowl I was happier with. And maybe I will.

Over the past few years I've been trying out a large number of crafts and blogging about them. In fact I posted an entire review of my craft projects last year. Some end results have delighted me, while others I've known I could improve upon. I'm still pleased I've had a go.

I think there's a huge synergy between witchcraft and making things with one's own hands. In both we are using our own energy to create positive changes in the material world around us. The vision, focus, and concentration and effort it takes to mould wet clay into a bowl is comparable to the vision, focus, concentration and effort it takes to cast a spell. And of course, many spells have a physical crafting element, such as making a poppet, enchanting a candle, or stirring up a potion.

If your spells or crafts don't work at first. Remember first attempts don't have to be perfect. Try again.

It's not imperfect, Lucya - it's unique! Not at all bad for a first attempt either.
