Pagan Eye: Mike Kelley's Switching Marys @ Tate Modern

I took this photo at the Mike Kelley - Ghost and Spirit exhibition in the Tate Modern. It shows Switching Marys, a folk-horror re-imagining of a May Day celebration showing the Biblical Virgin Mary as an abusive figure. The description quotes the artist as saying:

"I was in a May Crowning ceremony once. I think I was picked because I was the smallest boy in class. [This] videotape comes out of that experience... May Crownings are still being performed... it's so pagan!"
Several of Mike Kelley's creations focus on ghosts and the world of spirit, as the title of the exhibition would suggest. I'd never seen anything he'd created before I went, but I really enjoyed what I saw. Much of it is weird. His later work is full of bright colours and much of it uses lighting effects and video. I found it visually appealing as well as thought-provoking.

Mike Kelley - Ghost and Spirit is on at the Tate Modern, Bankside, London SE1 9TG until 9 March. Tickets are £18 or free for nembers https://www.tate.org.uk/visit/tate-modern.

My Pagan Eye posts show photos that I find interesting - seasonal images, pagan sites, events, or just pretty pictures. If you want to send me a photo for a Pagan Eye post, please email it to badwitch1234@gmail.com Let me know what the photo shows and whether you want your name mentioned or not. For copyright reasons, the photo must be one you have taken yourself.
