Craft: Slow Stitch Scraps and Scents Egg

Slow stitching is a mindful crafting practice that uses up scraps of fabric, thread, buttons and beads. The idea is that you create freehand shapes and patterns by hand embroidering leftover pieces of cloth without too much pre-planning. It's a relaxing upcycling activity that can also produce beautiful works of art.

I made little egg above using slow stitching techniques, then stuffed it with dried petals and lavender for a lovely scent. The picture shows what I started with, the half-way stage, and the finished item. Here's the process in detail:

  • Gather scraps of fabric, ribbon, buttons, beads and thread, ideally from leftover bits and pieces you might have.
  • Either draw an egg shape on paper or download an egg-shape template (you can find these easily with a search)
  • Using the template, cut out two egg shapes from scrap fabric (I used felt, but other fabric is fine)
  • Hand embroider freehand patterns on each fabric egg shape. I used couch stitch with decorative ribbon. You can also apply buttons, beads or other decorative items.
  • Sew both fabric eggs together around three-quarters of the edge. Felt doesn't fray, so I used running stitch. If you use something that does fray, use blanket stitch.
  • Fill the centre of the egg with dried flower petals and herbs, or toy stuffing if you prefer.
  • Sew up the rest of the edge, attaching a small loop of ribbon from the top to hang it by if you want.

Eggs like this would make great Easter gifts for people who don't want chocolate.

There are more ideas for seasonal crafting in my book Pagan Portals - Rounding the Wheel of the Year.
