Pagan Eye: Jack in the Green

This great picture was sent to me by Sarah Crofts. It shows the Fowlers Troop and the Deptford Jack in the Green processing through the streets of London this May 1.

The spring tradition was revived in Deptford in the 1980s by the Blackheath Morris Men, after seeing a photograph of a Jack in the Green procession from the 1900s. The foliage-clad figure of Jack in the Green, accompanied by musicians and people in fancy dress, is now a popular sight in London and other English towns every May Day.

You can find out more about Fowlers Troop and the Deptford Jack in the Green at http://www.deptford-jack.org.uk/

On each Pagan Eye post, I show a photo that I find interesting, with a few words about it. If you want to send me a photo for a Pagan Eye post, please email it to badwitch1234@gmail.com Let me know what the photo shows and whether you want your name mentioned or not. For copyright reasons, the photo must be one you have taken yourself and you must confirm that you are submitting it for A Bad Witch's Blog.
