Review: The Goddess in America

The Goddess in America is, I feel, an important new book about paganism and the divine feminine.

America is a a huge country – one in which the roles of religion and spirituality, and the roles of women, are hot topics in current affairs. For pagans too, there are controversial issues about the appropriateness of honouring deities that are not those of one's ancestors or those of the land one was born in.

This book looks at the way modern American goddess worshippers tackle those issues. It covers native goddesses; migrant goddesses, such as those of Africa and Ireland, and imported goddesses such as Ariadne from Ancient Minoan culture; and modern goddesses including such archetypes as Marilyn and Maleficent.

The subtitle of The Goddess in America is The Divine Feminine in Cultural Context and the book also tackles with sensitivity and insight issues including cultural appropriation, feminism and the common ground between pagan Goddess worship and Christianity.

Publisher Moon Books says on its website: "An anthology with contributions from nineteen writers, The Goddess in America is a book that identifies the enduring experience of Goddess Spirituality through a four-part discussion focused on the Native Goddess, the Migrant Goddess, the Goddess in relation to other aspects of American culture (Feminism, Christianity, Witchcraft etc.) and the Goddess in contemporary America."

The Goddess in America is in Moon Book’s superb series of community books and I wish I could have been one of the contributors. Not living in America, I wasn’t eligible, but reading it has made me want to visit America again and experience at least some of the amazing goddess-honouring ceremonies and rites that are described in the book’s pages.

The Goddess in America: The Divine Feminine in Cultural Context is published in October, but copies can be ordered in advance.

Review: Keepers of the Light Oracle Cards

I love this set of oracle cards more and more as I use it. It is full of images of gods and goddesses, angels, spiritual teachers and enlightened beings, who Kyle Gray – the creator of the deck – calls Keepers of the Light. Whether you think of them as real entities or psychological archetypes, they are figures of history and mythology that we can call upon when we need help and guidance in our lives.

Obviously you can use the Keepers of the Light oracle cards much like any divination deck. You can draw a single card or more for inspiration and messages about the past, present or the future - and it works very well. But I’ve found that it is much more useful than just for fortune telling or divination.

When I'm casting spells or performing seasonal rituals, I like to put images on my altar of the deities I am calling upon - but I don't always have a suitable one to hand. Or, at least, I didn't until I got this deck. Now I do. And the images are beautiful too.

Each picture in the Keepers of Light deck was hand drawn by visionary artist Lily Moses - and she has really done a lovely job. I particularly like the goddesses I photographed at the top of this post. The deities and other spiritual beings are paired male and female, so those who like to call upon both a god and goddess can do so.

Publisher Hay House says: "The new Keepers of the Light oracle card deck from Kyle Gray draws together 44 Ascended Masters, spiritual deities and beings from many world traditions, and embraces spiritual teachings from ancient to modern times. The deck balances male and female energies, and includes traditional masters like Lord Buddha and Mother Mary, Earth-based deities like Gaia and Cernunnos, and modern favorites like Sanat Kumara, Lady Venus and Saint Germain."

Keepers of the Light Oracle Cards by Kyle Gray is officially published today, September 27, but I've been lucky enough to have had my copy for a couple of weeks and I have been using it almost every day for both divination and magical work.

The deck is published by Hay House and the RRP is £13.99, which is highly affordable.

Get Creative at the Mind Body Soul Experience

If you like crafting things, you can have a go at making candles, jewellery, soaps, beauty products and much more at the Creative Studio at Alexandra Palace this October.

The Mind Body Soul Experience has introduced a new area for 2016 – the Creative Studio. Across the three days of the show, you can come along to try your hand at a creative art.

At the Illustrate Your Mantra class with Mike Medaglia you can create a beautiful piece of art containing a quote or lyric that inspires you. Or you could produce a beautiful piece of jewellery with Angela Ang in her Introduction to Jewellery Making class.

You have the chance to make something with which to pamper yourself – a soap or bath bomb, or a beauty product such as a natural hairspray, body butter, body scrub, lip scrub or lip balm, in classes with Naz Midas.

Learn how to ask the universe for the things you want to achieve by attending the Future Dream Catcher class with Eco Ethno, or learn the art of glass engraving with Naz Midas.

I always enjoy the Mind Body Soul Experience, which runs every year in London, but this year I think I'll enjoy it even more because I love making things. Obviously candle making is my favourite craft, as it can be a part of candle magic, but I also love learning to make new things.

The organisers of the show point out that this is a great opportunity to unleash your imagination and learn how spending time creatively can enhance your sense of wellbeing.

Spaces for workshops in the Creative Studio are limited, so visitors are advised to book online in advance at mbsevents.co.uk, where a full list of workshops can be found. Price of workshop includes
materials and use of equipment.

The Mind Body Soul Experience is on 21st, 22nd and 23rd October 2016 at Alexandra Palace, London, N22 7AY

Opening times: Friday 11am - 6pm,  Saturday 10am – 6pm, Sunday 10am – 5pm
Online admission costs: Adults £10, Concessions £8
On the door: Adults: £12, Concessions £10
A Mind Body Soul Experience ticket will also gain you free access into the OM Yoga Show, which is
situated in an adjoining hall.
Details and bookings here: www.mbsevents.co.uk

Pagan Eye: A Haunted Bookshop in Lewes

I bet you aren't surprised to learn that a bookshop this old and spooky looking is supposedly haunted. It is one of the places I visited when I was in Sussex a week ago doing a series of ghost walks. The bookshop is in Western Road, on the corner of Keere Street.

The figure of an old man is sometimes seen pottering around inside just as he did when the building was his home, according to the book GhostHunter Walks in Sussex. Apparently customers have mistaken him for a member of staff and asked him questions, only for him to disappear before their eyes.

Sadly photography is not allowed inside the bookshop itself, which is just as rambling and full of character as the outside.

My Pagan Eye posts show photos that I find interesting - seasonal images, pagan sites, events, or just pretty pictures. If you want to send me a photo for a Pagan Eye post, please email it to badwitch1234@gmail.com Let me know what the photo shows and whether you want your name mentioned or not. For copyright reasons, the photo must be one you have taken yourself.

Learn Candle Magic in Penge and Beckenham

There are two candle magic events taking place in Penge and Beckenham in the next fortnight. One of them is being run by myself at Penge Library and the other by Helen of Greyvisions at Venue 28, Beckenham Road.

Helen's class is the first. It is called Candle Magic Workshop With Mother Mary and it is being run as part of The Body and Soul Wellbeing Fayre at The Venue, 28 Beckenham Road, on Friday, September 30, from 7.30pm to 8.30pm. The cost to attend is £10.  I should add that I do not know Helen personally and am not involved with the running of this event, but here are the details about it that I was sent:
Nurturer, protector, guide, and caring spirit; Mother Mary conveys each of these roles and energies upon us. By connecting to her graceful, loving essence, you can fill yourself with the same support and love. In this workshop you will create a candle spell to help bless an area of your life (love, work, family, home). Revel in her unequalled love and soak in the magic of her grace. Through the light of your candle, connect with the divinity and immense emotion of the Divine Mother’s energy.
In this workshop you are taught how to create a personal candle spell for yourself and everything you need will be provided including a 7-day burning glass candle jar.
You can book for the Candle Magic Workshop With Mother Mary here.

A week later, on Friday 7 October, I am giving a coffee morning talk on candle magic at Penge Library, starting at 11am and lasting an hour.

My talk is completely free, and even includes free tea or coffee and a biccie. It is being run as part of the library's regular coffee morning events. I will be explaining how to do easy candle spells and relaxing candle meditations as well as talking about my book, Pagan Portals - Candle Magic.

Although there is absolutely no charge for the coffee morning candle magic talk, you must book a place in advance. To do that, pop in to Penge Library at 46 Green Lane, London SE20 7JX or call 020 8313 4036.

Pagan Eye: My Two New Quartz Crystal Balls

Earlier this week, my hubby bought me these two crystal balls at The Litlington Crystal Store, in Sussex. He took me there to let me choose a wedding anniversary gift for him to buy me. I couldn't decide between the two quartz balls, so he bought me both. Aren't I lucky!

I'll be bringing both of them along to the afternoon workshop, Scrying by Candlelight, that I'm running at The Atlantis Bookshop on Saturday 22nd October. The workshop will teach the techniques of scrying using crystal and glass balls, dark mirrors, candles and water.

The workshop is a practical afternoon with lots of opportunity to develop your psychic senses to see the past, the future and the answers to questions in reflective surfaces, flames and smoke. If you are interested in coming along, the cost is £20 per person. To book a place, email atlantis@theatlantisbookshop.com, phone 020 7405 2120 or pop in to the shop at 49A Museum St, London WC1A 1LY. The shop is in between Tottenham Court Road and Holborn tube stations.

Abundant Goddess and Yoga Retreats Barbados

I like to share interesting press releases when I get sent them and here are the details of a wonderful looking holiday in Barbados. Wish I had enough money to go:
Goddess Acumen has launched Abundant Goddess and Yoga Retreats in Barbados, seven-day escapes which incorporate meditation, Emotional Freedom Therapy (EFT) and Neuro Linguistic Programming (NLP) within a programme of daily workshops, activities and yoga classes to give women the space to re-connect with their inner goddess. Goddess Acumen is led by Dr Helen Johnson.
Dr Helen Johnson said: "The six goddess archetypes are Athena (career and your potential), Artemis (your wild side), Aphrodite (love and pampering), Hera (your power), Persephone (letting go) and Demeter (taking care of you). The archetypes are metaphors for how we live our lives but we may only be tapping into one source, like Athena with our focus on work, or struggling to tap into another, like Demeter, as we experience a loss or a significant life change."

Helen added: "Each day at the retreats is dedicated to a different goddess, utilising the luscious surroundings of Barbados."
In addition to daily yoga, participants will take part in activities such as surfing, exploring the island, and enjoy a visit to the Oistins for their legendary Friday fish fry. Accommodation during the retreat is at The Legend Garden Condos set on the shores of idyllic Mullins Beach on the island’s west coast, known as the platinum coast for its profusion of beautiful beaches.

The package which include flights from the UK, most meals and accommodation costs £3,599pp or £3,249pp when booked by the 1st January 2017, payable in one, two or three instalments. The package also includes 3 months of coaching with Dr Helen Johnson.
