Concealed Revealed: The Hidden Objects Project

Objects long ago hidden in the walls, floors, roofs and chimneys of people’s homes have always fascinated me. Were they put there for magical protection, sentimental value or just accidentally misplaced?

Last week, historians Ceri Houlbrook and Owen Davies gave an illustrated talk at the London Horse Hospital on just that subject, which they have been researching. The event was called Emotions, Identity and the Supernatural: The Concealed Revealed Project and here are the notes I took:

Ceri began by talking about the relationship between people’s emotions and the supernatural and their inner lives, which is the subject of the Emotions, Identity and the Supernatural research project that the historians are involved with. When it comes to people’s unexpressed emotions, how do we get to historical views of this?

One way is to involve experts on different periods of history - medieval, early modern and modern – and also look at people’s domestic and personal lives. In terms of domestic interiors and protection of places people live, the research focused on material objects of magic that people used to protect themselves and those around them. Ceri also looked at mental illness records – internal fears that lead people to mental illness. These included included fears of witches and fairies up until the 19th century, when believing in witches was itself considered symptomatic of mental illness.

The material culture of post-medieval magic is a big area of study. People have been finding dried cats, shoes and written charms in buildings for 100 years or more. When they were found and reported in local press or studied by folklorists in the past there was a tendency to try to find a pre-Christian background. Ralph Merrifield, a 20th century archaeologist and museum curator, wrote classic book covering the topic: The Archaeology of Ritual and Magic. He was trying to find patterns of behaviour.

Looking for continuity of practice for several thousand years raises problematic issues. The practice of concealing objects was widespread from ancient to recent times, but there are no literary sources from these periods as why they did it or why they put objects in those places. There is a lack of both written and oral sources. So, how do we access the emotions of what people were hoping to achieve?

Well, we can’t know for sure, but we can propose theories.

For their project, Ceri and Owen set about gathering as much data as possible on hidden objects, using online resources, word of mouth and gathering as many examples as possible. Rather than put it on a spread sheet they used historypin – an online resource where people can share photos and stories, telling the histories of local communities, including curated collections by site members.

Concealed Revealed has six categories on Historypin of most commonly found objects These are shoes, other garments, animal remains, miscellaneous, bottles, and time capsules. Bottles and shoes seem to be the most common concealed objects, although there are quite a few miscellaneous figurines, including the Burwash figurine of a pregnant woman. Other examples include:
  • A wooden post carved with markings (might be an almanac but called a witch post)
  • Pages ripped from a Bible
  • A rag doll found in Fife
  • Animals such as mummified cats
The objects might not be deliberately concealed, but most seem to be. Items in chimney breasts, under floors and on roof beams seem deliberately placed. This leaves the questions:
  • Why were chimneys, roof space and walls so popular?
  • Why were bottles, shoes and cats so popular?
  • What made people choose to hide them away?
Shoes
Owen Davies said that hidden shoes are nearly always old shoes. He pointed out that there is a tradition that old shoes bring luck. For example, people throw old shoes after wedding parties. In WWI small boots and shoes were worn as lucky amulets.

In some ways hidden objects are ritual recycling – they are old and worn out, but putting them in a wall is a ritual act and the act itself gives the objects new meaning. The purpose of concealing an item gives it a meaning and then finding it again imbues it with meaning.

Tim Easton, in East Anglia, has been researching the finding of objects and ritual marks. He is one of a small number of people researching this, mainly non academics, in the past 50 years. Adding academic principles and methodologies to this brings new insights and maybe a questioning of old interpretations.

The Northampton Museum and Art Gallery has a concealed shoe index – appropriately a shoe box. It was started by the former curator, June Swann. The index gets reports of two to three shoe finds each month, many overseas, particularly in Canada and Australia. Again there are no written record of the practice of hiding them. Sometimes the shoes are concealed with other items. One was found with a Bible, others with bits of metal

Bottles
The hiding of witch bottles started in mid to late 17th century. In cases of bewitchment, the urine of the victims, felt hearts and sharp objects were put in a jar and either boiled or buried. This was sympathetic magic to cause the witch pain and make her take her spell off. There is a perceived link between the witch and the victim. Boiling is more active; burying is more for protection - to protect the house.

Bellarmine bottles (such as the one pictured) are often used. Someone obviously thought it was an ideal vessel for magical ritual and the idea spread. Maybe one person started it and others copied it and so the idea was born.

Witch marks
These are ritual protection on wooden beams and stones. Tim Easton has been researching them since the 1970s, but new research is showing how widespread this is. The marks are often flower shapes – but these flower shapes do not appear in grimoires (Owen Davies is the author of a book on that subject). That doesn’t mean they don’t have a ritual purpose, however. There are questions.
  • What was the personal impulse of people?
  • What did they meant to those who did them and saw them?
  • Did they know what it was three generations on?
  • Were they originally just decorations?
These have been widely reported in press as witch marks, including in a PR campaign at Halloween. They are also called demon traps in the press. Owen Davies said that these names are problematic. They might have ritual significance, but there is no source material to say they are demon traps or to do with witches. Do they have other interpretations? Maybe they are just to do with luck in a general sense. The marks might accrue emotional significance from interpreting them too. Meanings can change over time.

Collections of items
Some finds are collections themselves – ritual midens. Sometimes the caches have been added to over time. These are difficult to interpret as there is fragmentary evidence. Some might be more to do with the builders than the owners of buildings. Perhaps it was good luck for the builders.

Ceri said that these objects have complex biographies. The are not crafted to be concealed objects – they are everyday objects, often old and worn out.

The research also looks at what happens once hidden objects are revealed - how people who find them recontextualise them. Interviews with people who discover them show that they tend to be found when a building is renovated or demolished. Some objects are just thrown away. The Ottley collection of five shoes was originally six shoes, but one was thrown away before the significance of the collection was considered.

Often the significance is recognised by the finder and evokes strong emotional response. Laura Potts of Norwich has a shoe that was found by builders during the renovation of her home and in an interview expressed a great attachment to it.

What do people do with found objects?
The historian Malcolm Gaskill said he would put hidden shoes back and that is a trend with many people. Most people put found objects back where they came from. For example, a cat skeleton under hearthstone may be to keep the house rodent free. If you don’t have mice, you want to keep things that way. Removing objects and putting them back shows emotional involvement. Something is going on - why not throw it away or give it to museum?

It shows that people can still believe in the power of objects. Some people are concerned that by removing them they are leaving their home vulnerable to threats. Reconcealment speaks volumes. Magic and superstition are generated in the present day with these acts. Not everyone reconceals them. Some display them, but close to the original place of concealment.

The finder of the Waveney shoe said: “I don’t regard myself as superstition, but have never made appointment to give it to museum.”

There are stories of objects being removed and bad things happening until they were put back.
Psychological studies show we are still prone to magical thinking and if something bad happens after removing an item they will attribute bad luck to that. People think, why risk it?

There is a feeling that the objects belong to the house. Author Alan Garner, back in 1960s, found a shoe in a timber-framed building he owned and brought it down from roof, but kept it in room below where it was found and only showed it to academics studying it.

Even when a concealed object is discovered, its biography and agency continues. Whether it has power or not it impacts its finder as well as impacting its concealer emotionally.

The pictures show: Shoes catalogued on the project, the Horse Hospital,  the book  The Archaeology of Ritual and Magic, a witch bottle on display at Michelham Priory.

Not Scrying over Brexit and the Future of Britain

So today Theresa May starts the process that will lead to Britain leaving the EU. I feel sad. I'm old enough to remember us joining Europe and how full of hope the future seemed. Peace and prosperity through greater connection with the countries we are closest with seemed well worth the small price of changing our currency, switching a blue passport for a red one and a little more regulation.

Now we are saying goodbye to all that and the future doesn't seem so bright.

I thought of getting out my crystal ball and scrying at what the years to come might hold in the wake of Brexit, but in the end I decided not to.

I do not believe the future is fixed, even if the options sometimes
appear limited. The future is what we make of it - and the best option
now is to try our hardest to make the future as good as it can be for everyone.

Extract From Answering Avalon's Call

Here is a short extract from a book called Answering Avalon's Call - The Mystical Odyssey of an Earth-Healer, by Carol Ohmart Behan. The book isn't due to reach shops until May, but this short sample should give you a taste of what it is like:

The Lady of the Lake

A cool, cloudy Autumn day greeted us the morning of October 11th as we gathered at Long Branch Park at the northern end of Onondaga Lake. We began the day by joining in a large circle, nearly sixty of us, with ceremony calling the Sacred Directions, giving thanks to the Beings of the Land, thanking and acknowledging the Peacemaker. And most especially we called upon the Lady of the Lake to hear us and receive the healing energy we were raising for Her in our work together that day.

There was music from several wonderful groups, speakers, informational booths, a labyrinth to walk, and a children’s activity area, all focused on celebrating the Lake and honoring the Earth. And everyone was encouraged to spend some time during the day at the simple altar we’d devised for the Water Blessing. A wooden stool held a white and blue enameled basin into which people poured their offerings of water blessed by their prayers of Love and Thanks. The four directions were marked with rows of yellow gourds so people could choose the place that felt right to come and stand with their offering and then pour it into the basin. Many had brought small bottles with water from a body of water that was special to them, springs, streams and rivers, the ocean, lakes, even from their own wells. And for those who hadn’t known about this ahead of time, a pail of the Lake’s water rested on the ground next to the stool from which they could dip up a cupful. It was my privilege to oversee this all that day, standing nearby to answer any questions, but mostly to “hold the energy” of this beautiful ceremony.

All day the humble basin received people’s water-offerings, each one infused with blessings and messages of Love and Healing for the Water. And of course there were a dozen and more water offerings and messages from the larger Mystery School community and I reverently added and gave voice to each one.

Late in the afternoon the much-blessed water was poured carefully into a five-gallon bucket which was brought into the center of our closing circle. Over one hundred people held hands and we sang a last blessing to the gathered water. Then it was carried down to three canoes and the half-dozen people waiting to carry it out from shore and offer our day-long efforts to the Lady of the Lake.

With everything finished at last, I drove off into the evening dusk somewhat weary from the long day, but so marvelously elated. I was driving along the Parkway on the Lake’s east shore when an unmistakable summons came. “Find a place to stop and come down to the water.” Moments later a pull-off appeared and I turned into it, shut off the engine, and got out. It was only a short walk down to the water, not yet too dark to see my way clearly. I had no idea what to expect, only thrilled at what was unfolding. Then I stood at the water’s edge, the peaceful Lake stretching out before me, mirroring the moving golden string of car-lights driving along the highway on the west side.

There was a stirring out on the water not far from shore. Transfixed, I saw a shadowy shape rising and begin moving towards me. Now in total awe I knew at once it was the Lady of the Lake. It was She who had called me to stop and come down to the water. She came to within perhaps a dozen feet of the shore and stopped, hovering above the water, clearly pleased that I had come and that I could see Her. I felt more than saw Her smile and nod to me. I received her thoughts, a gentle message of thanks to all of us who had gathered that day and for what it was we had done and created together. Then, unmistakably, these words were clearly spoken to me in the dusk, “We are healing one another… we are healing one another. Please share this with the others.” I told her I would and again She nodded, smiled, and slipped away into the night. I remained there at the water’s edge for several long moments suffused with the Grace of this visitation, then made my way back to the car and drove home.

Carol Ohmart Behan is a writer, eco-activist, and a teacher of Earth-wisdom through labyrinth and pilgrimage. She lives in the Catskills of Upstate New York.

Magic School: Myth, Ritual & Magic: Anthropology

Goldsmiths University is running an evening course starting on 25 April, called Myth, Ritual and Magic: Introducing the Anthropology of Religion. The tutor is Dr Justin Woodman, who I previously heard talk at Seriously Possessed and Cthulhu and Contemporary Occultures.

Here are the details about Myth, Ritual and Magic from Goldmsith's website:
This course introduces an anthropological perspective on religion, examining its social role in diverse cross-cultural contexts as well as investigating the societal, evolutionary and psychological significance of religious behaviours with regard to understanding what, if anything, constitutes ‘human nature’.

To this end, the course will examine the key categories of magico-religious belief and practice used by anthropologists (including myth, ritual, witchcraft and shamanism), as well as surveying theories regarding the continued importance of religion in a contemporary, globalised world with regard to topics such as fundamentalism and identity, religion and violence, and new religious movements.
This is an introductory ten-week short course with weekly sessions from 6.30pm-8.30pm at Goldsmiths, University of London, New Cross, London SE14 6NW.

It runs from Tuesday, 25 April - Tuesday, 27 June. The cost for the course is £260.

Review: Natural Born Shamans - Teaching Children

Books that show ways of teaching pagan subjects to children are few and far between. Good ones are even rarer, but Natural Born Shamans - A Spiritual Toolkit for Life, about using shamanism creatively with young people of all ages, does that brilliantly.

The author, shamanic practitioner Imelda Almqvist, has heaps of practical experience as she teaches a training group for young people called the Time Travellers.

As well as explaining how to run sessions for children, the book contains 32 tried and tested plans for classes Imelda has run - and they sound amazing. If you are a pagan parent and want to include some shamanic work with your own children, this really is the book to read.

The book also details of rites of passage suitable for both young people and adults - it really is intended to help parents themselves as well as offering advice on bringing up children in a shamanic way.

Publisher Moon Books says on its website:
Natural Born Shamans - A Spiritual Toolkit for Life covers all aspects of performing spiritual or shamanic work with children and young people. It is aimed at anyone who has an interest in young people and their spiritual journey, and covers all age groups from “in utero” until age 18+.
The book explains what shamanic parenting is and describes ways of doing spirit-led work, even with both unborn babies and spirit children (after miscarriage, abortion or early death). It also provides 30 “tried and tested” session plans for people looking for inspiration and “where to start”.

Author Imelda Almqvist is a shamanic teacher and painter based in south London and pioneered her shamanic programme for young people, The Time Travellers, in 2012. Her book Natural Born Shamans can be ordered via Amazon.

Review: Mediumship - An Introductory Guide

The skill of mediumship - generally defined as mediating communications between spirits of the dead and living - is something I've long wanted to learn. So, I was delighted to be given a copy of a new book called Mediumship: An Introductory Guide to Developing Spiritual Awareness and Intuition.

It is in the Hay House Basics series, which means it is a straightforward guide aimed at beginners, The author is Gordon Smith, who is a respected medium. As I hoped, it offers an great overview of exactly what mediumship is and how to go about learning to do it.

The book also explains that mediumship is not something that can be learnt quickly. Having a natural talent is good, but just because you are psychic, can see ghosts or have clairvoyant abilities, doesn't mean you are a medium yet (to paraphrase Yoda).

Gordon explains that it is vital to spend a lot of time practising to tell the difference between spirit communication, things picked up empathically, stuff from your own subconscious, guesswork and pure fantasy. It is also important not to get too emotionally affected by other people's grief, which can happen if you are meeting people who want contact with loved ones who have passed.

He recommends spending a lot of time using meditation techniques and also learning how to achieve a balanced mental state. He also recommends finding a good training circle with an experienced teacher rather than purely trying to learn as a solitary - although reading this introductory book and doing the exercises in it are good first steps.

Publisher Hay House says about the book: "The function of a medium is to be a conduit between this life and the afterlife or spirit world. Every medium is intuitive or psychic, but not every psychic is a medium. This book explores how to still the mind to enable spirits to communicate with you, sitting in the power and opening up to authentic messages, working with the aura and reading the signs and symbols that surround people and connecting to your spirit guide and learning their signature or calling card and much more!"

Wicca and Mediumship
My own specific interest in learning about mediumship grew when I discovered that Gerald Gardner, the founder of modern Wicca, had insisted that his early priestesses had mediumistic abilities. He felt that this was useful - if not essential - for channelling the words of the Goddess. Later, his High Priestess Doreen Valiente wrote (or at least largely rewrote) The Charge of the Goddess to be spoken by Wiccan priestesses if they felt that, despite the Goddess being invoked, they were not receiving messages to relate.

Nowadays, high levels of mediumship skill have less of a focus in many Wiccan rites - at least in my experience. I think it would be good to perhaps return to basics on that front. I would like to see more covens also having mediumship training circles, where priests and priestesses could learn to be better at hearing the words of the Gods and Goddesses of the Craft, as well as the words of the spirits of our ancestors.

Mediumship: An Introductory Guide to Developing Spiritual Awareness and Intuition (Hay House Basics) can be ordered via Amazon.

Question: Magic or Street Art - What Do You Think?

These were seen on the streets of Deptford, in South London, by a friend - the poet Cat Conway. She sent me the photos and asked if I knew whether they were part of a spell, religious offerings or art.

I replied that I wasn't sure. The one at the top could be some sort of curse against the person in the picture, but again it could just be street art.

The one to the right looks more like an effigy with offerings, although it is hard to say for sure.

Cat gave me permission to post the photos on my blog and ask readers what they thought.

Any ideas?
