Review: Moon Magic for a Full Moon

There's a full moon tonight - the best time for witchy magic. And for those looking for inspiration about what do do when the moon is full, here's a review of a new book all about working with the phases of the moon. It is called Pagan Portals - Moon Magicand is by Rachel Patterson, High Priestess of the Kitchen Witch Coven and author of Grimoire of a Kitchen Witch.

As Rachel says in her introduction to Moon Magic: "The Moon is such a beautiful sight in our skies; she is full of mystery and intrigue yet also full of immense power. She has been seen through history as being part of the occult and linked to enchanters, magicians and witches alike. Images abound of a wolf howling to the Moon and of witches flying on broomsticks silhouetted against her as a backdrop. She is a huge part of all sorts of pagan pathways."

Rachel explains exactly how witches can work with the cycles of the moon using rituals, spells and meditations as well as providing recipes for incense and oils and instructions on how to make charms and other projects.

This is intended as an introductory book, suitable for those wanting to learn the basics of witchcraft, but as well as explaining the basics it has a lot to offer more experienced witches such as ideas for different ways of celebrating and honouring the moon. One of the suggestions is for women to create a moon diary, so they can see how their own menstrual cycle - traditionally linked to the moon - affects their feelings, emotions and magical energy. Chapters cover deities associated with the moon, magical correspondences such as crystals and colours, supernatural creatures linked to the power of the moon and ways of using the moon's power in divination.

Publisher Moon Books says on its website: "Moon Magic is an introduction to working with the phases of the Moon, what they are and how to live in harmony with the lunar year and to utilise all the magical powers it provides. It's filled with the basics of the lunar cycle, the representations and correspondences of each phase, what magic to work and when."

All in all, Rachel's new book would be a useful addition to any witch's bookshelf, along with her earlier publications Pagan Portals - Kitchen Witchcraft, Pagan Portals - Hoodoo Folk Magic and Grimoire of a Kitchen Witch.

Pagan Portals - Moon Magicis due to reach bookshop shelves at the end of January and can be ordered through Amazon.
