One of my resolutions for 2025 was to write a poem for each of the eight festivals in the Pagan Wheel of the Year. Here is my poem for Lammas, the celebration of the start of the harvest. It's also when the blackberries and other soft fruit are ripe. In this poem I looked back at memories from school holidays when I was young, and there's a little hint of fairytales.
Berrying
Berries ripened
among the briars
at the back of the garden
and out of sight. We picked them fast,
laughed at our bounty,
our hands stained
as red as bloodBut we were careless
and pricked our fingers
on hidden thorns
in tangled vines.
The wheel turned
and childhood ended.
The briars grew
but the garden faded
Now I dream
of that carefree summer
though scores of years
have passed in time.
