Pagan Eye: God Mosaic at the Verulamium Museum

This Roman mosaic is known as the sea god mosaic, but the identity of the face in the middle is a bit of a mystery. It could be the god Oceanus. However, it might not be a sea god at all. Some people think it could portray a horned god of the woods. It was made around AD160-90 and was in a house in Verulamium, which was the third largest city of Roman Britain.

The mosaic is currently on display in Verulamium Museum at St Albans. The Museum stands on the site of the Roman town and you can also visit some of the archaeological sites nearby. Inside the museum are displays of items relating to all aspects of everyday life in Roman times, including activities at temples and shrines.

So, what god do you think is depicted in the mosaic?

My Pagan Eye posts show photos that I find interesting - seasonal images, pagan sites, events, or just pretty pictures.

If you want to send me a photo for a Pagan Eye post, please email it to badwitch1234@gmail.com Let me know what the photo shows and whether you want your name mentioned or not. For copyright reasons, the photo must be one you have taken yourself.

Harry Potter and the Bricket Wood Coven

Yes, I know, the title of this post is a little misleading. Harry Potter, the famous fictional boy wizard from the J K Rowling novels, never met Gerald Gardner, the father of modern pagan witchcraft, and neither did he visit his Wiccan coven at the sleepy English village of Bricket Wood.

The picture above is a Photoshop illusion too, rather than real magic. The Hogwarts Express has never pulled up at Bricket Wood station, as far as I know. I cobbled the image together myself after visiting the station and then going on the Warner Brothers Harry Potter Studio Tour. Because, you see, although these two icons of modern magic are worlds apart in terms of reality and fantasy, their legacies are just down the country lane from each other.

At first glance too, the two locations couldn't be more different. Warner Brothers Harry Potter Studio Tour is a massively popular and well advertised tourist attraction showing the sets, costumes, models and monsters that appeared in the movies based on the fantasy novels and also giving a glimpse into how the films were made. Bricket Wood does all it can to hide its witchcraft history. It has no museum of witchcraft (that’s in Cornwall) and no shops selling pagan paraphernalia (you need to head into central London for them). Even Bricket Wood’s houses – neat mid-20th century bungalows and terraces with immaculate gardens – look more Privet Drive than Hogsmeade.

You can find out about Gerald Gardner’s connection with Bricket Wood through history booksor searching the internet. The Wikipedia entry says:
"During the 1930s the area became popular with naturists after Charles Macaskie set up a naturist camp on the outskirts of the village. Naturists bought up plots of land on the edge of the village and built their own communities... The village also began to attract Wiccans after Gerald Gardner set up Bricket Wood coven."
Actually, the coven often met inside the naturist camp, in an old so-called "witches' cottage" in the club grounds. Gerald had bought the 16th-century cottage from a friend, Freemason John S M Ward, who was a pioneer of the restoration of historical buildings.

Yet here is where the knowledgeable observer starts to see a little similarity between the fictional world and the real world. Gerald's witches' cottage actually looked very much like the one created by Warner Brothers as Harry Potter’s parents’ home. You can see the pictures of both of them here. The one on the left shows the real witches' cottage and the one on the right is a photo I took on the studio tour.

The naturist club is still there. I’ve never been inside, but the gates at the entrance bear just a slight resemblance to the movie set gates outside Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry – which you can see on the studio tour.

On the other side of the village, on Bricket Wood Common, is where I felt the greatest sense of the numinous, when I walked into woods that could have been part of the Harry Potter set.

The forest floor was, in places, a carpet of bluebells and their scent filled the air. In other places were gnarly, moss-covered oak trees, twisty hazels, blossom-covered hawthorns and dappled light from beach groves falling over stands of green ferns and tiny saplings pushing up through layers of old leaves. Birds were singing, squirrels darted from branch to branch and at one point a young deer ran across the path in front of me. If you want to experience the magic of nature, it doesn't get much better in my opinion.

After such as wonderful stroll through enchanting woods, I was half expecting to be a bit disappointed by the Harry Potter studio tour in nearby Leavesden, which I booked tickets for some time in advance. But I wasn't - it is marvellous. As the description of the tour on the Warner Bros website says:
"As the books were still being released while the films were being made, the production crew saved many of the iconic sets, props and costumes that were created especially for the films - just in case they were ever needed later on in the series. Once filming wrapped on Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows - Part 2 in 2010, the production crew were left with a treasure trove of thousands of intricate and beautifully-made artefacts, many of which wouldn't have been saved on a typical production. The team behind Warner Bros. Studio Tour London - The Making of Harry Potter wanted to preserve and showcase these iconic props, costumes and sets so that Harry Potter fans could experience the magic of filmmaking first-hand. Many of the original cast and crew returned to reassemble the sets and record their memories from filming... Set adjacent to the working film studios where all eight Harry Potter films were made, the Studio Tour offers visitors the unique opportunity to explore two soundstages and a backlot filled with original sets, animatronic creatures and breathtaking special effects."
It is breathtaking. You can wander through Hogwarts' great dining hall and down Diagon Alley and also see other locations just as they were depicted in the films: the Gryffindor common room, the dormitories, Dumbledore's study and the huge dungeon where potion classes took place. You get to see props and costumes close up and learn a few secrets about how they were made and how the illusions of magic were created.

A recent addition to the exhibtion is the Hogwarts Express, which you can climb on board and experience a scene from one of the movies. Photography is welcomed in most parts of the tour - though I'm not sure how happy the folks at Warner Bros will be with my poor attempt at Photoshopping the picture I took of the famous train.

If you want to find out about the Warner Bros Studio Tour, here is the website: http://www.wbstudiotour.co.uk/ You can order The Complete Harry Potter Collectionof books via Amazon and also rent the movies. One of the best history books about modern witchcraft is The Triumph of the Moon: A History of Modern Pagan Witchcraft.

The photo of The Witches' Cottage, a hut in Bricket Wood used by Gerald Gardner and his Bricket Wood Coven to perform rituals during the mid-20th century, is by Sunblade1500 and shared under Creative Commons. The rest of the photos on this page were taken by myself.

Review: Crazy Sexy Love Notes by Kris Carr

Last week on my birthday a beautiful thing arrived in the post. Although it wasn't sent as a birthday present, it really was a delightful gift - a review copy of Crazy Sexy Love Notes,a deck of 52 cards designed to make you feel good about life.

Don't get me wrong, these aren't just positive affirmation cards that say things like "I am perfect". They are gentle and uplifting, but they tell a few home truths too. The first one I got warned me not to gossip: "Avoid bonding over complaints and feeling superior. Human beings weren't meant to be perfect, and this includes you." It was a timely comment, as I had indeed just bitched about something.

The card I drew the following day was Confidence - which you can see below, to the left. It was again just what I needed to hear as I was having a bit of a low-confidence day. I was supposed to be writing something, but couldn't seem to find the right words. The card said: "Everybody starts somewhere...don't worry about making mistakes; you can always course correct." This is absolutely great advice for any writer. A poor first draft is better than no first draft at all. You can always improve it on the rewrite.

Pictures on cards are as important as words, and these are delightful - as you can see from the few I've photographed. The art is by Lori Portka. You can find out more about her work here: http://loriportka.com/

The deck works in the simplest way possible. You just pick a card. On one side is a picture and a brief phrase, on the other is a more detailed message. There's no book to look things up in or any complication at all. They are just lovely cards to guide you and help you make the most of each day. And, despite the title, they really aren't crazy at all.

Publisher Hay House says: "In this card deck from New York Times bestselling author Kris Carr, featuring gorgeous illustrations by artist Lori Portka, you'll find gentle, yet powerful reminders to help you care for and appreciate yourself at the deepest level. Let these love notes guide you back home when you lose your way, and remind you to choose love, nourish yourself, notice the blessings and accept yourself unconditionally."

Radio: Ritual Sexual Abuse: The Anatomy of a Panic

Tomorrow evening, BBC Radio 4 is broadcasting the first part of a series about changing attitudes to sexual abuse. The title is Ritual Sexual Abuse: The Anatomy of a Panic. The description on the BBC website says:
David Aaronovitch of The Times traces the powerful intellectual influences behind what he sees as one of the most important cultural shifts of the past 40 years: from a society in which accusations of sexual abuse were wrongly ignored to one in which the falsely accused were crushed by a system where the mantra was "victims must be believed".

In the first of two programmes, Aaronovitch will examine the role played by unproven psychoanalytic theories which, from the 1980s, spread from the world of therapists in Canada and the USA to social work, medicine and then to law enforcement in Britain.

From the NSPCC to academia it was believed that children were being sexually abused in group Satanic rituals, which involved murder and animal sacrifice. The programme will explore how these bizarre ideas took hold, how they were related to mistaken psychotherapeutic practices, and how they resonate still.
Ritual Sexual Abuse: The Anatomy of a Panic, pt 1, is on at 8.30pm, on 25 May 2015 and is repeated at 9.30pm, on 31 May. You can find out more details here: http://www.bbc.co.uk/programmes/b05vx63j

Walks and Talks: London Tree Week

Today is the start of London Tree Week, chance to celebrate London’s trees and woodlands with a week of special events including guided walks, talks and activities.

There's stuff going on all over London every day until Sunday 31 May. One of the activities is called Stalking the Hardy Ash, a photography walkshop. The London Tree Week website explains:
Some 150 years ago poet and novelist Thomas Hardy was an architect’s technician in charge of excavating the graveyard in Old St Pancras churchyard. He arranged for gravestones to be removed so work could continue on the London and Midland railway. The gravestones were leant against an ash tree, the roots of which have enmeshed the stones over time.
The free walkshop is with photographer Peter Coles. The picture above shows the Hardy Tree, but is one taken by myself.

You can find out more about London Tree Week here: http://www.london.gov.uk/get-involved/events/london-tree-week-23-31-may-2015#2
