Spider Phobia Workshop for Arachnophobes
I like spiders, but apparently 55 per cent of women and 18 per cent of men are frightened of them.
September and October is known as ‘Spider Season’ the time of the year when spiders come inside to mate. This is a real problem for the estimated 12 million UK adults who suffer from arachnophobia - a fear of spiders.
However, the Spider Courage Experience has a 4-hour course that offers to help. The organisers claim that people arrive with a fear of spiders and leave with the fear either disappeared or massively reduced to the extent that they can hold a live tarantula.

Good Morning Britain recently filmed a spider phobia therapy session with Britain Stelly at the ITV studios and at Chessington World of Adventures to highlight the extent that people with arachnophobia are affected by spiders during this time of year. Even Piers Morgan got so excited about the spiders he tried to kiss one of the tarantula's! Over three days of filming Britain helped more than 40 arachnophobes, including some celebrities, to overcome their fears.
James Jordon from Strictly Come Dancing struggled to even grasp the idea of holding a tarantula and on the first day refused to do it. Even running away when the tarantulas were brought out. By the third day, he held 'Peaches' one of the Spider Courage Experience therapy spiders and was thrilled to do so.
"It was a massive change to be able to do that!" James said.
Amber Davies, the recent winner of Love Island, was also able to hold a tarantula by the end of the therapy. Gemma Magnusson, despite being a champion weight lifter and one of the strongest women in the world, had always suffered with arachnophobia but managed to overcome her fears. In an emotional moment she held a tarantula and let a house spider crawl onto her hand. It destroyed her fear in one moment and changed her outlook on spiders all together.
Adam Cox, the hypnotherapist for The Spider Courage Experience explained why such dramatic changes can happen so quickly. He said: “Phobias are learnt quickly either by an initial sensitising event or often from parents or family members. The mind works quickly to develop a fear as part of a survival strategy. The techniques we use can create an immediate change because we do things quickly. Many people can’t believe that you can destroy a phobia in a few hours but it’s easier to do it fast as that’s how the mind works!”.
Although it’s still spider season right up to Halloween, arachnophobes no longer have to let spiders be the thing they fear. Creature courage is offering a free hypnosis download on its site to help get through the rest of the tricky time.
The next Spider Courage Experience takes place at Chessington World of Adventures on October 21.

Community Book Every Day Magic is at the Printers!
I've had a notification that the community book I edited - Every Day Magic - A Pagan Book of Days - is at the printers. It is always so exciting when a project you've been working on for a long while gets another step closer to becoming public!
Every Day Magic is a Moon Books community book and contains contributions from nearly 50 pagan authors and practitioners from many different traditions across the world, including Atlantis' Geraldine Beskin, best-selling pagan authors Ellen Evert Hopman, Melusine Draco, Harmonia Saille, Rachel Patterson, Caroline Wise and Elen Sentier and other Moon Books writers.
Here is the description from publisher Moon Books' website:
The book isn't due to be officially launched until November 24, but you will be able to see and buy early copies of the book at the launch party on November 4 at The Atlantis Bookshop, 49A Museum St, London WC1A 1LY. The party runs from 4pm to 7pm and there will be tea and cake as well as a chance to hear some readings from the book. The launch event will be free to attend, but you will need to reserve a place in advance. Tel: 020 7405 2120, email atlantis@theatlantisbookshop.com or pop into the shop to book your place. You can also contact the shop to order copies of the book if you can't get there in person.
You can also take part in a Thunderclap to celebrate the official launch of the book on November 24. It is completely free to take part in this - for more details, go to this link: http://www.badwitch.co.uk/2017/09/help-announce-every-day-magic-with.html

Every Day Magic - A Pagan Book of Days contains 366 spells, rituals, meditations, Pagan prayers, divinatory techniques, poems to read and recipes and craft projects to try out, along with the details of festivals that take place throughout the year. All the activities are intended to be easy to follow so you can pick up the book, open it to a day and find something you can do. There are festivals from the ancient world and modern Pagan celebrations as well.As well as coming up with the idea for Every Day Magic, I edited and contributed to it - and I'm very proud of it. However, as it is a community book I will not be receiving royalties - I asked for any money raised from it to be used to help bring more pagan writers' works into publication.

Pagan Eye: Mysterious Romano British Coin Hoard
This Romano British pot and coin hoard are on display at Living on the Edge: 8,000 Years by the Sea - an exhibition of archaeological finds that's on in Eastbourne, East Sussex, at the moment.
The vessel and coins were buried about 275AD and the mystery surrounding them is, why were they buried? Although some coin hoards were hidden for safekeeping, but never recovered by their owners because war killed them or drove them away, this one was buried at a time when the area was relatively peaceful. The owner would have had ample opportunity to collect their belongings later on.
One possibility, according to the description at the exhibition, is that the coins were left as an offering for Gods or local spirits. In England, there was an ancient tradition of sacrificing valuables by burying them in the earth or throwing them in water to ask for divine favours. It is possible that the practice continued through Roman times.
Living on the Edge is on at Eatbourne Pavilion. The description of the exhibition says:
Discover the stories of life along the Seven Sisters over the past 8,000 years. From Stone Age settlers and Roman farms to Victorian coastguards guarding the coast. For some, this was their first glimpse of Britain. For others leaving this coast as soldiers, it would be their last memory of home. Find out how the National Trust’s Seven Sisters Archaeology Project with its team of volunteers have preserved these stories for the future. You can find out more here: http://www.eastbournemuseums.co.uk/Latest-Exhibitions.aspx

September Mandala: Green Man of the Autumn Equinox
Today, for the Autumn Equinox, here is a Green Man created from leaves, seeds nuts and berries from my garden and trees near where I live.
Every month this year I have been making a seasonal mandala, mostly from natural items found in my garden. This spring equinox I created one showing the Goddess of Life and Death, so I thought I would balance that with a male image at this time of year, when the days and night are again of equal length.
The leaves on the trees are just starting to turn golden and the season of growth is turning towards the season when the greenery is dying. Samhain, the festival when we honour the dead is the next in the cycle of the Wheel of the Year, and we look towards it as well as looking back at the long, hot days of summer past.
This time of year has a personal reminder of death to me, as it was two years ago almost to this day that my cat Jerry passed to the Summerlands. I built a cairn for him over his grave in my garden and on the anniversary of his death I spent some time by it, remembering him. As I did that, my new kittens - Tommy and Tuppence - came out into the garden to join me. They played around the cairn and Tommy even climbed it and sat on top. It reminded me that there is a time for everything and life goes on. It is important to remember our loved ones who are no longer with us, but it is also important to take joy in the moment and appreciate those who are here.

Review: Pagan Portals - Australian Druidry
In Pagan Portals - Australian Druidry, author Julie Brett offers ways of honouring and celebrating the land, flora and weather systems of a continent very different from England or even most of Europe. Her book has the subtitle Connecting with the Sacred Landscape and comes from years of experience of doing just that.
Publisher Moon Books says on its website:
Pagan Portals: Australian Druidry works as a supplement to the study of Druidry and other nature-based spiritual paths as practised in Australia. The seasons, animals, plants and ancestral histories of the land in Australia are quite different from those of the Celtic lands where Druidry originates. Julie Brett discusses the difficulties of following a nature-based tradition in an environment wildly different from Druidism's place of origin, and offers practical information on how to adapt the practice of Druidry to suit the energy of the land and respect its spirits and ancestors.Although I don't live in Australia, I found the book thought-provoking and inspiring. There is a lot to be said for observing nature, the weather and the cycles of the seasons wherever you live and adapting your spiritual practices to fit what is really happening around you rather than what the standard Wheel of the Year says ought to be going on.

Event: Certaine Wytches: Fear, Myth and Magic
There's an exciting new exhibition and series of events about witchcraft taking place in Stroud, Gloucestershire, this autumn. Certaine Wytches: Fear, Myth and Magic is part of a long-term project by artist and researcher Anne Jackson.
It uses historical texts, original artwork and contemporary scientific and cultural references to explore the subject of women and witchcraft. The exhibition is free to visit and runs from Saturday 30 September to Sunday 5 November 2017 at the Museum in the Park, Stratford Park, Stratford Road, Stroud, Gloucestershire, GL5 4AF.
Here are the details about Certaine Wytches: Fear, Myth and Magic from the Museum in the Park website:
In Anne Jackson's current project, ‘The Witchcraft Series’, she presents a series of works exploring the history of witch persecution in Europe, and the metaphors which the idea of ‘witchcraft’ evoke in modern culture, through the medium of knotted tapestry. Here are details of the talks and other events running alongside the exhibition:
Referencing sources from the earliest printed books warning against the evils of witches, to the repeal of the final Witchcraft Act in English law in 1957, the works explore the imagery and social attitudes that led to the trial and execution of thousands of people, mostly women, across Europe.
Jackson's large and small-scale tapestries often depict evidence given in individual witch-trials, including that of young children encouraged to testify against their mothers. Whenever possible, she reproduces the original printed texts from witch-hunting pamphlets and trial accounts as part of the tapestry composition, seeing this as a kind of ventriloquism, giving a voice to individuals from the distant past.
Several tapestries also utilise the metaphor of ‘witchcraft’ to reflect upon our sense of powerlessness in the face of current fears and concerns, such as climate change.
Anne Jackson has exhibited widely across Europe, the USA and in Australia. Her work is held in public collections, including the Art Endowment of the City of Aalborg, Denmark, the Geffreye Museum, London, and the Museum of Applied Art, Budapest, Hungary.
The Artist will be at the Museum on Friday 13 October, Wednesday 18 and 25 October, Saturday 28 October and 4 November between 2pm and 4pm. Call in to meet her and find out more about her work.

Apparently Today is the Most Miserable Day of the Year
I don't know about you, but I had a pretty good day today. It was nice and sunny, I went to an art exhibition at Dulwich Picture Gallery, had lunch out at a nice French cafe and spent the afternoon taking photos for the front cover of a new book I'm working on.
However, it seems I'm unusual. According to research, Sunday September 17th is possibly the most miserable day of the year - worse than any day in January.
Researchers took an in depth look at the mood of people in the UK and discovered that today is the day we hit our post summer low, with 61 percent admitting they feel like “that’s it” for another year. And according to the study – reasons for our malaise include the thought of having to put the heating back on (24 percent) and dreading the stress of getting ready for Christmas (23 percent).
Two in ten resent the traffic getting worse post the school holiday lull - with 26 percent of men admitting it drives them to distraction - while a further 19 percent HATE packing away their summer clothes for another year. A further 16 percent said that having put on weight during the summer has left them feeling depressed, while 14 percent said they were simply “knackered” from looking after the children during the school holidays.
A dispirited four in ten confessed they were simply not ready to say goodbye to the summer.
According to the data - a quarter of all us reckon September is even bleaker than January, with the 17th voted the most bleak day. In fact, 41 percent of those polled claimed mood swings and mild depression is setting in now that we are on the road to winter and women seem to struggle more than men with winter blues the study revealed.
Almost half of those surveyed confessed they feel sad that they won’t see their friends or socialise as much as they did in the summer.
Dr Jen Tan from A.Vogel, a traditional herbal remedy manufacturer who commissioned the study said: “The onset of winter signals a surge in levels of stress for many people which can lead to sleep problems and anxiety which all impact on our immune system as the winter approaches.
"Winter blues or SAD, as it has become known, means many people now recognise that they struggle with the winter months and autumn is a time to ‘batten down the hatches’ and prepare oneself physically and mentally for the onset of winter.
"This is where traditional herbal medicines such as St John’s Wort and Avena Sativa can help with anxiety and low mood and are a good alternative for many who may need some support during these months.”
However, it’s not all doom and gloom as 64 percent of Brits are looking forward to ditching salads and healthy light lunches for hearty roast dinners. For 39 percent of us, nights at home are our favourite part of winter. According to the poll, despite the loss of daylight and the increased darkness that the winter brings, 23 percent are excited about the clocks going back in October so we get an extra hour in bed.
I personally like autumn and in particular Halloween - or Samhain as us pagans like to call it. No, I'm not feeling miserable at all.
