Lammas Visualisation: The Wise Woman's Cottage

It is Lammas Eve. Lammas is the festival of the first fruits of the harvest, at the time of year the grain crops are brought in. It can traditionally be celebrated by baking your own bread or making a corn dolly. However, if you don't have the necessary skills, ingredients or inclination for cooking or crafting, here's a guided visualisation you can do to honour this festival in the wheel of the year.

Lammas Guided Visualisation: The Wise Woman's Cottage

Find somewhere safe, where you will not be disturbed. Sit comfortably and close your eyes. Take three deep breaths in and out and relax, then visualise the following in your mind's eye:

Visualise that you are in a baker's shop, in a small village in the countryside. It is Lammas, at the start of August, when the fields are ripe and the crops being brought in. You have been asked to deliver a basket of freshly baked bread to an old woman who lives on her own in a cottage on edge of the village, beyond the first field.

Taking the basket, you walk out of the door of the baker's shop and into the village street, It is a hot, dry, sunny day. Your journey takes you first along a street of old cottages, with gardens full of flowers.

At the end of the street there is a fence with a stile and beyond that a field that is golden with ripe grain. You cross the stile and enter the field. A path leads around the edge of the grain field. You see poppies and other wild flower and herbs growing in the borders. Beyond that you see that the grain crop is being harvested under the hot, August sun.

You watch the ripe grain being cut down in neat rows as you walk along the path. Crows circle in the sky above, and perhaps you catch a glimpse of other birds or animals. In the distance is the farmer steadily harvesting the crops, absorbed in his work. Observe what is happening as you slowly walk along the path. What do you see?

At the far end of the field is an old hedge, and after a while your reach it. In the hedge is a gate. This gate leads into the old woman's garden behind her cottage. Open the gate and walk into the garden, carefully closing the gate again behind you.

The garden at first seems overgrown, with tall trees at the sides, shrubs and bushes and tall plants, it offers cool, dappled shade from the August sun. You make your way further into the garden and see flowers growing everywhere. It is full of bright colours. You see bees going from flower to flower, you hear birds singing and notice the sign of other wildlife too.

You then see the old woman. She is harvesting berries and putting them into a basket. You go up to her and greet her. She smiles and greets you in reply. Then she invites you in to her cottage. She opens the door and you follow her inside. Look around, what do you see there?

The old woman invites you to sit at her table and put down the basket of bread, then she offers you tea. She prepares the tea using leaves in an earthenware teapot, and brings out a jar of fresh jam she has made from berries from her own garden, with butter and milk that she tells you is from a neighbour's farm.

You join her for tea. The fresh bread and the jam and other produce are delicious. You talk with her as you enjoy your tea together. What do you talk about?

When you have finished your cup of tea, she asks if you would like her to divine your future or answer a question, by reading the patterns in the leaves at the bottom of the cup. If you do, let her see the cup.

She turns it three times clockwise and then holds it to the sunlight that streams through the cottage window. Then she answers your question and gives you an idea of what the future might possibly hold for you. If you want, she can show you the patterns in the leaves and how she has interpreted them too.

Then it is time for you to leave. You say goodbye and stand and stand up, picking up the empty bread basket. As you are about to go, the old woman presses a final gift into your hands. You look at it and thank her, then put the gift into the basket and wave goodbye as you go out of the cottage door.

You walk back through her garden, through the gate in the hedge, along the path at the edge of the field and over the stile into the village. You walk back along the street and return the basket to the bakery shop, where you began your journey. But you may keep the gift that the old woman gave you, and you remember the things she told you.

When you are ready Shake your arms and legs and open your eyes to the real world.

I always recommend having something to eat and drink after doing a guided visualisation, or any ritual or magical work, as it can help you ground properly. After this visualisation, you could have a harvest feast - or just some fresh bread and jam and a cup of tea. You could even have a go at tea-leaf reading too.

You can find more guided visualisations in my book Pagan Portals - Guided Visualisations.

Movable Feasts: Should Festival Dates be Changed?

In America, there is a petition gaining momentum to move Halloween to the last Saturday in October, while in England, next year's May Day bank holiday has been moved from May 1 to May 8, to coincide with the anniversary of VE Day.

Now, Halloween is a bigger thing in America than it is in England. The move is being asked for due to safety reasons, as thousands of children get injured while out trick or treating in the dark every year. It is thought that moving it to a weekend would make it safer.

Even if Halloween does get changed in America, that doesn't mean it would get changed in the UK too. However, pagans are upset about both the May Day change and the potential Halloween change. May Day coincides with the modern pagan wheel of the year festival of Beltane, while the Christian festival of Halloween coincides with the modern pagan wheel of the year festival of Samhain. Both are based on older folkloric customs.

Of course, the move could mean that pagans get to celebrate extra festivals - our own feasts *and* the secular one a few days later or earlier. However, many feel upset that, once again, pagan issues are being ignored. It would be lovely to have all of the wheel of the year dates as bank holidays, everywhere in the world. As we currently have so few, the May Day change touches a nerve. Halloween is not currently a bank holiday, but why not make it one, rather than move it?

These festivals are long traditions - and they are not traditional movable feasts - surely creating extra bank holidays would improve safety *and* keep everyone happy?

What do you think?

The picture shows the community book Every Day Magic at a feast to mark its launch at The Atlantis Bookshop, in London. Every Day Magic offers something magical to do every day, including traditional festivals and other spells and rituals. You can buy the book at Atlantis and also view Every Day Magic on Amazon.

Pagan Eye: Debra's Story About the Moon at Lunation

The evocative photograph above is by Sara Hannant and is on display at her exhibition called Lunation, part of the current Moon Festival.  Each of Sara's photographs at Lunation illustrates a story by a Londoner telling their relationship with the moon. This is Debra's Story.

Sara's website gives a short quote from that story:
“I always look at the moon as part of nature and part of wellbeing. You know certain moons deal with mental health so on a full moon I am more irritated and more possessive. Then on a quarter moon or a half moon less active.”
You can read the full version at Lunation. I particularly like this picture because it contains an ammonite, and reminds me of a dream I once had. I blogged about it as The Ammonite Dream.

The exhibition is at Charlton Road, London SE7 8RE. Entry is free.

My Pagan Eye posts show photos that I find interesting - seasonal images, pagan sites, events, or just pretty pictures. If you want to send me a photo for a Pagan Eye post, please email it to badwitch1234@gmail.com Let me know what the photo shows and whether you want your name mentioned or not. For copyright reasons, the photo must be one you have taken yourself.

Pagan Eye: The Moon Garden at Charlton House

This is a photo of the Moon Garden, at Charlton House. The garden was created for the current Moon Festival and I went on a tour yesterday evening. The garden itself is free to visit. It is a beautiful, quiet spot to rest in the shade on a hot day, but is perhaps best enjoyed at dusk.

It is full of flowers that only blossom at night or are related to folk tales about the moon from around the world. The Moon Garden was designed to be both a way of being in nature and a way of relating to the moon. It is one of two moon gardens created for the festival. The other is in General Gordon Square, Woolwich.

Also at Charlton House is the Lunation Exhibition, exploring what the moon means to people through photography by Sara Hannant  and words by Nii Ayikwei Parkes. I went to the opening night yesterday, after my tour of the garden, and I loved the beautiful and inspiring pictures and stories. Charlton House is at Charlton Road, London SE7 8RE. Entry is free.

The Moon Festival celebrates people’s relationship with the moon across cultures, time and disciplines and coincides with the 50th anniversary of the moon landing in July 2019. You can find out details of all the events here: https://moonfestival.co.uk/

Do You Think Large Dolls are Scary or Friendly?

I've seen a lot of posts on social media recently about dolls - particularly large dolls - with people commenting that they find them creepy.

Now, I suspect a lot of this is to do with the latest Annabelle horror movie. I haven't seen any of the films in that series, but I do collect dolls, so I thought I'd blog a bit about the subject today.

The dolls in the photo at the top are all mine, and one of them is a large doll. Her name is Esther. I was given her for Christmas when I was a very little girl, and at the time she was about the same height as me. She was my favourite doll.

As I got older she got relegated to the loft. Then she nearly got thrown out, but I rescued her from the rubbish before the bin men came, washed her and put her in my bedroom, where she still has her own chair. She is a bit broken and doesn't have her original clothes, but I couldn't part with her.

The roly-poly doll is also from my childhood; the giant bear was a gift from my husband; the small cloth doll came with a bottle of perfume a long while ago; my mum knitted woollen dolls in aid of charity and gave the one in the photo; I bought the vintage china doll in a charity shop and the cat toy came from Build-a-Bear Workshop. I don't find any of them creepy.

However, I thought I'd discuss the various ways in which dolls can possibly have spirits.

The animist world view is that every single thing has its own spirit or soul, including animals, plants, natural inanimate objects and even man-made things, including dolls. It is a view I'm sympathetic with. Such spirits can be communicated with, but the spirits of inanimate things tend not be very obvious or active unless you specifically look out for them.

Objects, including dolls, can also have a connection to the people who own them or who owned them in the past. Dolls can also be made to look like a person to create the same kind of connection. Witches can use this in spells employing sympathetic magic to affect the owner or person represented. This is more of a link to someone else's spirit, than any within the doll itself.

If you believe in ghosts, then a common idea is that those who have died, but not yet fully passed on to the next life, can attach themselves to places or objects that were important to them when they were alive. This could, of course, be a doll.

Finally, magical practitioners can perform rituals to deliberately attach or trap spirits into objects. This can be done for many reasons. The spirit could be wanted as a magical helper or guardian or it could be a troublesome spirit trapped to stop it causing mischief.

In my experience, it is very, very rare for a doll to have any sort of troublesome spirit. While some dolls do look creepy, it is usually just appearance - and nothing to be scared of.

If you suspect that you own a haunted doll and want to know what you can do about it, one book I would recommend is What Dwells Within - A Study of Spirit Attachment, by Jane Harris.

You can view What Dwells Within on Amazon and also view my own book on poppets and magical dolls on Amazon

But what are your thoughts on the subject?  Do leave a comment.
