Occult London: Brixton's Spiritual & Esoteric Shops

Brixton, in South London, has two fabulous spiritual and esoteric shops within walking distance of each other. One's called Powerfulhand and the other's called Original Product. They're both in Market Row, which is a covered arcade with a vibrant atmosphere. It's home to cafes, bars and shops offering things from all around the world. Brixton itself, as any Londoner will know, is a famous multi-ethnic community with a large population of people of Afro-Caribbean descent. Powerfulhand and Original Product both cater for magical and spiritual practitioners as diverse as the communities they are at the heart of. Here's more details about each of them:

Powerfulhand

This family-run shop on the corner of Electric Lane and Market Row started in Brixton in the 1980s. It now has a second store, in Birmingham, as well as an online busines: https://www.powerfulhand.com/

You can see a picture of the outside of Powerfulhand at the top of this post. The staff don't allow photography inside, but as you might guess from the window display, it stocks the biggest range of candles I've ever seen. It's truly superb and stretches across all the window space as well as onto another wall and an island unit. If you want any kind of candle for spellwork, rituals, to put on an altar, to give as a gift or just to look wonderful, then you're almost certain to find the perfect one here.

Powerfulhand also sells a large selection of herbs and incenses, oils and many other spiritual and esoteric items. The staff are friendly and helpful too. On the website it says: "We make it our mission to stock genuine authentic products, that are used across the world to help with various rituals and practices."

Original Product

I've heard this shop described as an "Aladdin's Cave" of treasures, and that's just how it seems when you walk inside. The shop is heaped with wonderful, magical things. It specialises in authentic items from Haiti, but also stocks products aimed at wider spiritual and esoteric communities - from amazing crystal balls to statues to charms, amulets and talismans from all over the world. Jenny, the proprietor, has been running Original Product for about 25 years, and quite a few of my friends regularly go there to buy things like herbs and incense.

In the middle of the shop, amid the glittering wonders, is a plainer wishing well (pictured). If you visit, make a wish and throw in a coin. The money raised goes to help the people of Haiti. You can find
Original Product at 8 Market Row, Brixton. The photo at the bottom shows the shopfront.

Interview with Poet, Author and Druid Roselle Angwin

Roselle Angwin is an award-winning poet, author, Celtic mythopsychologist, teacher and hedge druid, as well as being passionate about the environment. I interviewed her about those things, as well as about her books.

Q: First, what does being a mythopsychologist mean?

A: I’ve been interested all my life in the Celtic myths, legends and stories of the British Isles, and the Grail legends. I also studied these at university in their original languages. While training in transpersonal psychotherapy, I developed the idea that the particular myths and tales that grip us – enchant us – may have something to say about our psyche: what is significant to us, and themes that might be unconsciously driving us, helpful or unhelpful.

I’ve been leading workshops in such topics, generally using writing as a way in, for more than 30 years. As a result of the first series I offered ‘Myth As Metaphor’. Element Books commissioned a book from me on this subject: Riding the Dragon – Myth and the Inner Journey.

Q: You have had several books of poetry published and have won numerous awards. What's your main inspiration for poetry? Can you offer an example?

A: The main inspirations for my poetry are stories of land, sea, place, belonging, and other-than-human species. I’ve always lived in the country, and I walk a lot, which is when ideas begin to take shape for me. The Wheel of the Year inspires me. And of course the Awen – that sacred ‘fire in the head’.

Below is a simple poem from my most recent collection, A Trick of the Light, about the Isle of Iona, where I lead a retreat every April.

Elements

She learns the tongue of air
where the lapwing curves and the new
swallow streaks across the sand

tongue of stone and rock – their
ancient earthlit hues, the slow
deep stone-songs they know

tongue of the green water that runs
like a herd of wild horses, where
the seal’s head bobs at her call

tongue of the heart’s fire, these words,
the fluency of love. The longing
that joins us all.

Q: I understand your poetry has been incorporated with art installations. Can you tell me more?

A: I’ve worked a great deal with artists in different disciplines. I was the poet in the genius loci project in 2000 with visual and sound artists in the wonderful Hestercombe Gardens in Somerset; the following year we were working, again outdoors, at the Cotswold Water Park. My poetry has appeared on buses and cathedral websites, in numerous anthologies, hung from trees, printed on T-shirts, carved, etched or painted onto glass, stone, metal and wood, made into a trail, become pennants behind bicycles, been painted, sung, composed to, choreographed, recorded, broadcast, danced, performed, and eaten by sheep. My long-term collaborator, Michael Fairfax, has carved many of my short poems into wood, occasionally with sound too.

Q: How important do you feel poetry and storytelling are in pagan spirituality in general and Druidry in particular?

A: As the bardic arts I feel they’re essential means of transport to other realms, and they can also be deeply healing – making whole. Also they are teaching tools, holding the wisdom of the Old Ones.

Q: What advice would you offer someone who was interested in learning the art of storytelling or poetry from a pagan perspective?

A: Pause, take time to listen, look deeply, see through, ask ‘what if?’ Tune the imagination. Always look for more than is apparent, and more dimensions than first appear. The world is richly resonant. Seek old bardic tales and poems; read them aloud. Look for poets and tellers who have a sense of the sacred, the Otherworld, and who honour the planet. Find magical tales. Rewrite your own versions of older stories. For me, the Celtic tales are an unending source of such inspiration. As animists, we might look for the spark of light/life/consciousness in everything, and find a new way to write about it.

Q: Your book A Spell in the Forest - Tongues in Trees is described as part love-song, part poetic guidebook, and part exploration of thirteen native sacred British tree species. Can you tell me more about the book and your love of trees?

A: The book began with much time spent – still being spent – stepping into the Otherworld and back in a magical Brittany forest, supposedly a fragment of the old Forest of Brocéliande of the Arthurian quests. That came together with our new scientific understandings of quite how miraculous our tree kin are, in so many ways, and my own deep environmental commitments.

The binding thread is my own practice of working the Wheel of the Year that I spoke of above, also with 13 lunar tree months according to the old Celtic ogham calendar/alphabet. The heart of the book unpacks this so that a reader can make their own journey.

Q: How do your poetry and spiritual practices intersect with your environmental concerns?

A: My personal life as well as my work as a facilitator and catalyst for change is working at the threshold of the sacred, the arts and therapy, but often outdoors, and always with an engagement with the non-human other. I’m passionate about transformation, particularly of our relationship to the other-than-human, our kin, so we begin truly to live from an eco-centric and soul-centric, rather than human-centred, viewpoint. We are all in this together.

Q: What are you currently working on?

A: There’s a vegan cookbook-plus. A book of essays. Part 11 of A Spell in the Forest to complete. Another two poetry collections. Meantime, we are working on our permaculture-style veg garden, with small orchards, plenty of wildlife-friendly plants and corners, and a reforestation project. That’s mainly why the books are taking so long to complete.

Review: Wanderland: Search for Magic in the Landscape

The book I've just finished reading is Wanderland - A Search for Magic in the Landscape. I loved it. It's a tale of one woman's quest to find places in England that seem, well, magical is the best term. It's a quest I've embarked on myself and many of the sites she visits are ones I also love including Cornwall, Sussex and Glastonbury. But, like me, author Jini Reddy lives in London.

The city is the start and end point of her journeys as well as being a place full of woods, parks and an underground labyrinth that inspires her first pilgrimage. That London labyrinth is at Warren Street and is in a series of artworks by Mark Wallinger in tube stations. The name for the entire series is Labyrinth. I've seen examples myself, which have also filled me with a longing to explore others on foot. While I was led to Julian's Bower, Jini travels to one by the edge of the sea near Looe in Cornwall. I looked it up, and now want to go there too.

However, there's a difference between us. Jini was born in London to Indian parents from South Africa, grew up in Quebec, and has travelled the world. I'm a middle-aged white woman who was born in London and have lived here most of my life. I grew up learning the myths and legends of England. Jini was raised in a home where statues of Hindu deities were on display. When I travel to sites of spiritual tourism in England, I'm pretty much invisible among all the other middle-aged white women and familiar with the cultural references used there. Jini has to brace herself to face racist glances and the awkwardness of needing to ask questions, such as: what actually is the nave of a church? (It's the central bit, by the way.)

That cultural difference means Jini doesn't identify her quest as a search for the mythic landscape - the mythological tales of Arthur, Brigid, or the Green Man don't resonate with her. It's the landscape itself that calls. She writes that the word "magical" is more inclusive than the word "mythic". I can absolutely see that, and probably feel the same way. When I'm in a place that seems numinous - which can be sites in London as well as in the country - it resonates as a personal feeling inside me more than as a connection with ancient gods or figures from legend. I love the old stories these places have inspired, but I'm probably more happy to make my own stories inspired by my experiences there - a psychogeography of landscape more than devotion to the religions of my ancestors.

Reading Wanderland has inspired me to go on more of my own quests to find magic in the landscape. Although I've visited several of the places mentioned, the book taught me about some I'd never heard of before - including a secret spring near Hastings. And there are chapters on places I've always wanted to see, such as Lindisfarne. I really ought to get out my diary and set some dates for my own pilgrimages. I'll take my copy of Wanderland with me, and reread the pertinent chapters when I'm there.

You can view Wanderland - A Search for Magic in the Landscape  on Amazon . It is published by Bloomsbury. It came out in 2020. (Note: I earn commission from advertisers for some links. This helps support my blog at no extra cost to those who read my posts.)

Pagan Eye: The First Spring Daffodils of the Year

February began with snowdrops in my garden, then last week I photographed crocuses in the park. Now the first daffodils are blooming outside my house. I took this photograph yesterday between showers, but despite the raindrops it really felt as though spring had arrived.

On each Pagan Eye post, I show a photo that I find interesting, with a few words about it. I'm not quite sure what I'll be including - it could be a seasonal image, a pagan site, an event, or just a pretty picture.

If you want to send me a photo for a Pagan Eye post, please email it to badwitch1234@gmail.com Let me know what the photo shows and whether you want your name mentioned or not. For copyright reasons, the photo must be one you have taken yourself and you must confirm that you are submitting it for A Bad Witch's Blog.

Bad Witch Answers: A Spell to Grow Knowledge

Someone who read my blog emailed me with a question: "Do you have a spell to grow my knowledge?"

My short answer is that magic is no substitute for learning. If you really want to gain indepth knowledge about any subject then you need to read books on the topic or take classes on it or do lots of your own research. However, mythology does offer supernatural ways in which humans have gained knowledge without the hard study.

In Irish mythology a story goes that a salmon ate nine hazelnuts that fell into the Well of Wisdom. The magical mix of the nuts and water turned the fish into the Salmon of Knowledge. It didn't do the salmon a whole lot of good though, because a poet, Finegas, got the idea that if he ate the salmon he'd gain all that knowledge himself. However, it's a little unclear if it was knowledge or wisdom that he hoped to gain, or both. It took Finegas seven years to catch it, but he did. He then asked his servant, Fionn, to cook it but told him not to eat any of it. Of course Fionn had a little taste, as most cooks will, meaning Fionn gained the knowledge - or wisdom - and Finegas got very angry.

You could use the symbolism of this tale in the quest for knowledge. Here's a spell idea:

First get a notebook, pencil, nine hazelnuts and spring water.

Take the hazelnuts and spring water out into a place in nature, ideally beside a natural waterway, and leave the nuts and springwater as an offering. Then, spend some time in that place contemplating the specific topics in which you wish to increase your knowledge, why you want to do so, and what practical efforts you are going to make towards that goal. Make notes about any thoughts that came to you.

Return to the same place seven times. Continue your contemplations and make any further notes. On the seventh visit, look around the area for something you know is edible and which it is OK for you to pick. You might have to research those things as you really don't want to poison yourself and you also don't want to break any laws about foraging. You don't need to take much. Fionn gained the knowledge of the salmon just by licking some fat from it that was on his fingers. As this is symbolic rather than a reenactment, you don't have to go fishing! It could be something like a single dandelion leaf that was growing in the grass.

As you eat, ask the Salmon of Wisdom to guide you in your efforts to gain the knowledge you desire.

The photos were taken by myself. One shows a waterway out in nature, the other shows nine hazelnuts

Energy Work: What Will Stay and What Will Go?

This is the time of year for spring cleaning and part of that can involve a bit of decluttering. I’m not a fan of getting rid of stuff just because you haven’t used it in a while, but sometimes you need to make space or fancy a change. Here's a way of using your psychic senses to decide what will stay and what will go.

If you’re undecided about whether to keep an object, look at it carefully, examine it, and feel it. As well as checking if something could do with physically mending or cleaning, focus on how it makes you feel. What thoughts and emotions does it stir in you? Does it have a history, or a story to tell? If so, what? See if you can sense what energy it has.

Try closing your eyes. You might find it easier like that. Does that energy feel warm or cold, wet or dry, soft or hard? Does it have a colour or a sound or prompt memories? Try holding your hands a little way above it or around it. Do you get other impressions? Does the object now seem different to you than it did earlier? Is it something you want to keep or is it something you’ll be getting rid of?

There's no right or wrong answer except how you feel about it.

Author Ben Aaronovitch on London Library Tour

Ben Aaronovitch, best-selling author of the Rivers of London books, is going on a London Library Tour. At most of the events he's talking about his latest book, Amongst our Weapons, but he's also offering help to people on writing courses. I'm a huge fan of Ben's fiction because I love the way he describes the city I live in. He really knows London and his books reflect that as well as offering an alternative view in which goddesses and spirits inhabit both the natural world and the modern built environment.

I'm also very proud to have had the privilege of working with Ben on Rivers of London: The Roleplaying Game, published by Chaosium

Most of the stops on the London Library Tour are free and anyone can come along, but you will probably need to reserve a place to make sure you get a seat. Tickets are likely to go fast! I've listed the tour dates below with links, but you can also find info on Ben's website.

Pagan Eye: Crocuses Peeping Through Autumn Leaves

I photographed these purple crocuses peeping through the fallen leaves of autumn in my local park. The sight felt like a sign of hope, of a fresh start, and the promise of spring to come.

As well as representing hope and new beginnings, crocuses can be used in spells for love and happiness, according to Rachel Patterson in her book A Kitchen Witch’s World of Magical Plants and Herbs. She writes that if crocuses grow beside your home they will help bring happiness and optimism to all who dwell there. She adds that they're also associated with visionary work. If you have a pot of crocuses, you could place them near you if you are scrying or doing other forms of divination.

Crocuses are a flower I feel particularly fond of, ever since I learnt that Croydon - a town not far from where I live in south London - means "valley of the crocuses". It's more shops and high-rise buildings than wildflowers these days, but I like to think of what the area would have looked like in springtime back in ancient times.

There's more about seasonal magic and plantlore in my book Pagan Portals - Rounding the Wheel of the Year.

On each Pagan Eye post, I show a photo that I find interesting, with a few words about it. If you want to send me a picture for a Pagan Eye post, please email it to badwitch1234@gmail.com Let me know what it shows and whether you want your name mentioned. For copyright reasons, the photo must be one you have taken yourself and you must confirm that you are submitting it for A Bad Witch's Blog.
