Authors' 2024 Plans: Rebecca Buchanan & Curious Cats

I'm interviewing authors on what books they have coming out this year and their other plans. Here I talk to fantasy author Rebecca Buchanan about a book that's caught my interest as it's about cats.

Q: What book have you got coming out next in 2024? 

A: My next book will be Malkin: A Tale of Magic, Espionage, and Too-Curious Cats. 

Q: What’s it about? 

A: Malkin is a magical urban fantasy/alternate history/espionage romance. Maud al-Khalli is a daughter of privilege, wealthy and well-educated. She has also been blessed with the rare gift of being able to assume catshape. Carter Durant is an academic, a scholar of rare and lost magic. When a strange labyrinth is found in the middle of the city, and people begin  to disappear, Maud and Carter must overcome their distrust and work together to save their city — and possibly the world.

Q: When will it be published? 

A: I am aiming for the very end of February or the beginning of March.

Q: What event or events are you planning around the launch? 

A: I hope to have a free short story on my blog, Forests Haunted by Holiness.

Q: What are you currently working on?

Rounding the Year: Sharing Seasonal Pictures & Words

As the first signs of spring appear I'm starting prompts to share seasonal pictures, art, crafts, words and other creativity. I'll continue this over the months ahead, inspired by my book, Pagan Portals - Rounding the Wheel of the Year. I'd love to encourage readers to record what's happening in nature in various ways including photographs, journalling, drawing or painting and crafting.

The photo at the top captures snowdrops just starting to bud. I took the snap yesterday morning in my garden. They aren't quite out yet, but a few might bloom in the few days before Imbolc. This is time to nurture new ideas, hopes and wishes for the days and weeks ahead, even if they aren't yet fully formed. What's budding where you live or in your life?

Witchy Shopping: Heart Candles at Aldi for Love Spells

Jane Mortimer spotted these heart-shaped tealights due to go on sale at Aldi. She wrote:

"I just had to send you the attached photo of something that appeared in this week's Aldi Specialbuys booklet. They're pink or red heart-shaped tea lights, perfect for spells related to love, friendship, harmony and healing, and they go on sale on Sunday 28th January. They're £1.49 per set, and there are 9 in the photo, though it doesn't say how many there are in a set. However, at that price they'd be perfect for witches to snap up for their usefulness in magic.  There's room on top of them to scratch a name or intention with a pin."
