Review: Runes of Yggdrasil by Freya Aswynn

Last week I treated myself to a copy of a new set of divination cards - the Runes of Yggdrasil by Freya Aswynn, which she produced in partnership with Atlantis Bookshop.

In the past I'd never really got to grips with using the Runes, although I once had a go at making my own set, I've read a few books on the subject and even gone to a workshop or two. However, when I saw the Runes of Yggdrasil - which are printed on cards with vibrant illustrations as well as the Rune symbols - I really felt that was a form I could work with. I started using them by taking a card every day and my initial feelings were correct - this is a great way of learning to use Runes and my readings have felt accurate.

This is what Atlantis Bookshop said at the launch of the Runes of Yggdrasil:
We are very excited to be able to offer you a unique opportunity to own this intriguing new deck of rune cards, painted and privately published by the world-renowned rune expert, Freya Aswynn. Created as a signed, limited edition of just 200 sets, they are presented in a handsome metal tin and are accompanied by a booklet providing Freya’s personal perspective on each of the runes.

In her own words, Freya writes “The runes have been central to my life for 35 years and my first book on them appeared in 1984. Leaves of Yggdrasil was revised and updated in 1998 and became Northern Mysteries and Magic... Painting faces of gods is never easy and after a couple of attempts at illustrating the runes, the project was abandoned. Then, in 2009, I found an art tutor, Danny Francis and with the urging of Frank Geens/Freyr Sveinbjörnsson I started this rune pack. They took a year and I hope you enjoy using them.”
This deck costs £30 and is available exclusively from The Atlantis Bookshop, 49a Museum Street, London, Eng WC1A 1LY. Atlantis is happy to post out decks for those who cannot get to the shop – call 020 7405 2120 for further information.

Pagan Eye: Reflections of the Sky - Ardingly Reservoir

Yesterday I went for a walk around Ardingly Reservoir in West Sussex. It was perfect weather for the August Bank Holiday - sunny and warm. I took this photo of the sky reflected in the water and I think it captures the beauty of the reservoir, which is home to wildlife as well as supplying water to people south east England.

The weather was a complete change from last year's August Bank Holiday, when I went climbed up to the Uffington White Horse in rain and fog. Mind you, fog might have been apt for the theme of my walk yesterday, which was supposed to be spooky and came from the book Ghost Hunter Walks in Sussex. I will be posting some pictures of the allegedly haunted sites on A Bad Witch's Blog in future, but for now I would rather remember the sunshine, the water and the trees just starting to turn to their autumn hues.

My Pagan Eye posts show photos that I find interesting - seasonal images, pagan sites, events, or just pretty pictures.

If you want to send me a photo for a Pagan Eye post, please email it to badwitch1234@gmail.com Let me know what the photo shows and whether you want your name mentioned or not. For copyright reasons, the photo must be one you have taken yourself.

Pagan Events in London Today, Bank Holiday Monday

If you are looking for something witchy to do in London today, Bank Holiday Monday, here's a few suggestions:

At 11am you could go on A Tour of Southwark Cathedral Herb Garden with Julie Wakefield, a museum curator and medical historian specialising in historic herbalism and folk medicine. This event is organised by South East London Folklore Society and takes place at Southwark Cathedral, London Bridge, London SE1. Cost is £1.50. Email georgehoylefolkmusic@gmail.com to book a place. Details: https://www.facebook.com/events/512152615660920/

Treadwell's esoteric bookshop at 33 Store Street, London WC1E 7BS, is open from 11am to 6pm on Bank Holiday Monday. Bookseller Marco Visconti says anyone is welcome to pop in, browse books and get reading recommendations. The nearest Tube is Goodge Street and it is close to the British Museum, which is always worth visiting.

Festival of the Dark Arts is showing British Witchcraft Documentaries at the The Underdog Gallery, Arch 6 Crucifix Lane, London SE1 3JW, starting at 6.30pm. Details and tickets: http://www.guerrillazoo.com/second-coming.html

However, the Witches of London CoA Gathering, which normally meets on the last Monday of each month, has been moved to Tuesday. It meets at the back bar of the Cittie of Yorke at 22 High Holborn, London, WC1V 6BS starting at 7.30pm. However, due to the pub being closed today, because it is the August Bank Holiday, the moot has been moved to 30th August - but that's something fun to do tomorrow night. For more details email coacentral@witchcraft.org or visit the Facebook page: https://www.facebook.com/coawitchesoflondon/

The photo at the top shows a corner of Southwark Cathedral Herb Garden. The picture to the right shows the reading sofa at Treadwell's bookshop. Both pictures are copyright Lucya Starza and you must credit my name and www.badwitch.co.uk if you use or share them.

Review: Witchcrafted Printable Book of Shadows

If I say that I am over the moon about a downloadable and printable Book of Shadows, please don't misunderstand me. I am not suggesting anyone should buy or sell an actual copy of the Wiccan Book of Shadows online - and I have not bought one myself. Such things are naughty and frowned upon in Wiccan circles.

No, what I have been enchanted with is a collection of pages with blank space for you to write up your own Book of Shadows in your own hand - something traditionally done by candlelight. Around the edges of the printable pages are beautiful black and white illustrations that you can use as they are or colour in, as you can see I have attempted to do in the picture at the top of this post. (If you want to see some much better attempts at colouring in go to the website link at the bottom of this post)

The printable Book of Shadows is called Witchcrafted and is the creation of Amber Seber. It costs $15 for the 487-page PDF file. All the pages are different so you have hundreds of different templates to choose from, and each design comes in either lined or unlined versions.

As well as being able to colour in your BoS pages to personalise them, Amber's website suggests all sorts of other things you can do. Even the paper you print them on can be tailored to suit the size, colour and style of book you want.

My print outs photographed on this post were just done using regular white A4 paper, but you get a much better result if you use good quality letter paper. You could even try handcrafted paper or parchment, which is Amber's favourite. Amber's website offers tips and advice on colouring - including the best paints and pencils to use. She suggests you can use metallic markers too, which look like gold or silver leaf when dry.

The Witchcrafted pdf also has lots of other things you can use to embellish your book. There is extra artwork you can add, but my favourites are templates for little envelopes that you can fold into shape and stick into your Book of Shadows to contain things like dried flowers, herbs, notes you have written or pictures you have drawn.

You can find out more about Witchcrafted, including how to order a copy, here: https://witchcrafted.wordpress.com/

Learning: Witchcraft & Magic in Early Modern Europe

City Lit in London is running a course called Witchcraft and Magic in Early Modern Europe, starting on September 23 and taking place every Friday afternoon until December 9.

The description on the City Lit website says:
Chart the rise and fall of belief in witchcraft through the 16th and 17th centuries. In Europe, this belief in the supernatural power of humans to do ill or good resulted in thousands of executions of (mainly, but not exclusively) women.

What is the course about?
Belief in witchcraft and magic, the power of human beings to do good or evil by supernatural means, has a long history. We will focus on 16th and 17th century Europe when thousands of women (but not exclusively) were executed as witches.

What will we cover?
We will begin by looking at how late medieval society viewed witchcraft, culminating in the Malleus Maleficarum (Hammer of the Witches) published in 1486. Its purpose was to show that witchcraft existed and to instruct magistrates on how to identify, interrogate and convict witches. We will look at transcripts of ‘confessions’ and compare examples of witch hunts and trials in England and on the continent. We will explore the idea that witch hunts tended to take place in areas and periods where central control had largely broken down. For example, the activities of Matthew Hopkins took place during the chaos of the English Civil War. Finally we will look at the continuing debate as to why witch trials came to an end in the late 17th century. Did it mean that people had ceased believing in witchcraft and magic?
Recommended reading includes Different Interpretations of Witch-hunting in Early Modern Europe, c. 1560-c.1660, by A. Pickering, or The Witchcraft Reader (2nd edn.), edited by D. Oldridge.

City Lit is at Keeley St, London WC2B 4BA. Fees for the 12 sessions over 12 weeks are £189 (senior fee: £151 and concession: £83). To enrol, call 020 7831 7831 or visit the website: http://www.citylit.ac.uk/courses/witchcraft-and-magic-in-early-modern-europe

Book Review: Crystal Skulls by Judy Hall

Let's face it, there's been a load of cobblers written about crystal skulls in the past and in terms of fakes and forgeries they are up there with the Loch Ness Monster.

However, few can deny that crystals skulls look awe-inspiring and even the histories of the forgeries are amazing tales. What's more, plenty of people find them brilliant to use for scrying and channelling as well as for a focus for shamanic journeying.

If you want to read a really sensible book about the history of crystal skulls and how to use them psychically, then I would recommend the new Crystal Skulls: Ancient Tools for Peace, Knowledge and Enlightenment by Judy Hall. It is straightforward, well researched and very informative on the facts and fiction surrounding the world's famous crystal skulls and on how to use the type you can easily buy in shops or online.

As publisher Red Wheel said in its press release that came with my copy of the book:
Crystal skulls are human or other skull carvings often made of clear or milky white quartz or other semi-precious materials. Some are allegedly pre-Columbian Mesoamerican artifacts. Several, more recently carved, can be found in the permanent collections of a number of world-class museums, including the Smithsonian and the British Museum. In occult and metaphysical circles, the skulls have magical and healing qualities.
Obviously, the jury is still out on whether those "allegedly pre-Columbian Mesoamerican artifacts" are genuinely ancient, and Judy Hall is not trying to claim otherwise. Her field of expertise is the use of crystals for healing, personal development, psychic and magical work. She is the author of numerous books on crystals, including the famous Crystal Bible series. That is also where this book really shines, giving clear and straightforward instructions on how to choose a crystal skull, how to cleanse and attune to them, and also various ways of working with them.

Not all crystal skulls represent human heads - some are carved into the shape of animals or mythical beasts. One example is the dragon crystal skull you can see in the photo on the right, which belongs to Judy herself. A chapter at the end of Crystal Skulls explains how these can be used to help connect with power animals and tap into the symbolism of magical creatures.

I have to say it has made me want to do some mystical shopping this bank holiday weekend and maybe buy myself a crystal skull. I've never tried scrying with a crystal skull before and I am keen to give it a go.

Photo credits: The photo of the crystal skull in the British Museum was taken by myself, Lucya Starza. The dragon crystal skull picture was taken by Judy Hall. If you want to reproduce the photos, you must credit myself and Judy respectively.

Mapping London: Curiocity Launch at Stanfords

The picture to the right shows Henry Eliot and Matt Lloyd-Rose at the launch event of their new book Curiocity: In Pursuit of London at Stanfords map store in London last night.

Curiocity is a large and beautifully illustrated book based on the small, fold-out Curiocity maps of unusual things you can find in London that Henry and Matt produced a few years ago.

Each issue of their earlier map magazine had a different theme based on a letter of the alphabet, which unlike the familiar A-Z guides to London's streets featured the weird and wonderful rather than the mundane. Their new book, which is published by Particular Books - an imprint of Penguin - is very much the same kind of thing. It has lots of strange maps designed by various artists to show London re-imagined according to themes including dystopia and utopia, time travel, trade, the wyrd and even waste and sewage.

At the event at Stanfords, which was called Mapping London, Matt and Henry gave an illustrated talk about the maps and what inspired them. I have a copy of the book and I am looking forward to reading it. I'll be reviewing it on A Bad Witch's Blog in the future.

You can buy Curiocity at Stanfords, 12-14 Long Acre, Covent Garden, London WC2E 9LP or order it via Amazon.

Review: The Secret People: Parish-Pump Witchcraft

A book about witchcraft is coming out next month that is a real treat. It is The Secret People: Parish-Pump Witchcraft, Wise-Women and Cunning Ways and is all about the home remedies and folk magic of the past, but updated for the modern day.

As well as traditional spells, charms and potions used by witches, it also includes everyday magic used by ordinary people as well as a lot of good old common sense advice about making do, mending and using things from the home and garden rather than buying everything from shops.

I actually read The Secret People a few months ago because its author, Mélusine Draco, asked me to write an endorsement to go on the back cover. This is what I said:
The Secret People is all about the kind of practical folklore our grandmothers and great-grandmothers would have used in their daily lives when planting a cottage garden, foraging for herbs in the hedgerows, treating family ailments and making the most of what was around the house. It is also about the secret folklore they would have known, from love charms and fortune-telling to protection spells and magical cures. The book is both really useful and a delight to read. Mélusine said that it would take me on a trip down memory lane, and it certainly did.
The Secret People is published by Moon Books and this is what its says on its website:
Much of what passes for ‘witchcraft’ today was everyday knowledge to our forebears, especially those who lived and worked in the countryside. Here were to be found practical household hints, remedies and family recipes that had been handed down from generation to generation, some still existing in the form of treasured journals and notebooks. There is, however, nothing fanciful or far-fetched about this information - in fact, The Secret People is a remembrance of times past and a preservation of ‘parish-pump witchcraft, wise-women and cunning ways’ adapted for use in the 21st century. It may also go a long way in helping those present-generation pagans in search of an identity and answer the questions: Who ... what am I?
The Secret People can be ordered from Amazon.

Mélusine's previous books include By Spellbook and Candle - Cursing and Binding, Aubry's Dog: Power Animals in Traditional Witchcraft and also the Traditional Witchcraft series.

Bastet Candle - Shopping at the PF London Conference

I bought this lovely Bastet goddess candle and annointing oil in the market at the PF London Conference on Saturday. Both the candle and oil were handmade by esoteric herbalist Cristina Pandolfo of Domina Lunae Apothecary Witchcraft Emporium.

I will burn the candle in memory of my lovely cat Pharaoh who died just over a week ago, after a sudden illness.

Domina Lunae Apothecary specialises in creating and selling handmade supplies for magical practices, healing processes, feminine witchcraft and women’s spirituality. I was very impressed with all the lovely products on the stall, which I was told are made with natural ingredients and magical intent, following lunar magic and esoteric herbalism principles.

The stall had a range of goddess candles and if I could have afforded to on the day I would have bought several.

You can find out more at the Domina Lunae Apothecary website: http://domina-lunae-magical-lunar-apothecary.pswebshop.com/en/

PF London Conference - In Memory of Jean Williams

This year’s Pagan Federation London Conference was in honour of Jean Williams, an inspirational woman and high priestess who worked for the pagan community tirelessly throughout her life. She was a lovely person with a great sense of humour. I am glad to have met her on a few occasions, but wish I had known her better. She died last year shortly after launching her book The Play Goes On, and is very much missed.

At the conference, Morgana of PF International (pictured left) gave a talk about Jean Williams' life and legacy, including her work with Pagan Pathfinders and The Rainbow Bridge. The picture at the top shows a slide from Morgana’s talk with a photo of Jean and one of Morgana's memories of her.

Although the title of the conference was Magic and Mind, I made a comment to a friend on the day that it might have more aptly been named Death and Darkness. As well as the eulogy to Jean, there were talks by Lyn Balis on home funerals, Philip Shallcrass on death and Cat Treadwell on inspiration in darkness.

Yet none of these talks were gloomy – they all showed that death at the end of a long life is natural and not to be feared, while the “long dark night of the soul” can be a path to personal insight and growth. Philip Shallcrass’ talk was actually called Death: The Ultimate Tickle. He described his ability to see the spirits of some of those who have died and that in his experience death in some of its forms as a psychopomp, like the characters from Neil Gaiman’s comics and Terry Pratchett’s books, can have a sense of humour.

The programme wasn’t entirely about the darker side of life. I sadly missed the chance to go to workshops on animal spirit guides and the tarot, which were running alongside my own talk on candle magic. After that I went to a fascinating workshop on goddess oracles run by Caroline Wise. Other talks included Rebecca Beattie on 20th century literary pagans, Astrid Haszprunarova on spiritual alchemy, Amie Summer on conservation medicine and Jonathan Woodley on coming of age rites. There was also a chance to try belly dancing with Sascha Cooper and the day ended with music from Spriggan Mist.

There was a wonderful esoteric market, including stalls run by The Atlantis Bookshop, London Wildlife Trust, Domina Lunea Apothecary, Gemini Aspect pagan suppliers, Fox and Hare wand makers (pictured bottom right), Hendon Heathens, and Goddess in London (pictured above  right). I bought a lovely candle, which I am going to blog more about later, and I won a book called The Avalonians in the tombola.

But for me, the best bit of the day was meeting up with old friends and making a few new ones.

Pagan Eye: Atlantis Books at Magic & Mind

Here is a photo I took yesterday at the Pagan Federation London's Magic and Mind Conference. The picture shows Geraldine and Bali of The Atlantis Bookshop holding up a copy of my book Pagan Portals - Candle Magic.

There was a bit of a last minute panic getting stocks of my book to the Atlantis stall at the event because the order Bali and Geraldine had put in to the distributor was late arriving. Luckily I had a few copies myself that I was able to hand over before I gave my talk on candle magic in the morning.

Copies of my book are now also available to buy at the shop at 49a Museum Street, Bloomsbury, London, near the British Museum.

I'll be blogging more about the PF London conference either later today or tomorrow.

On each Pagan Eye post, I show a photo that I find interesting, with a few words about it. I'm not quite sure what I'll be including - it could be a seasonal image, a pagan site, an event, or just a pretty picture.

If you want to send me a photo for a Pagan Eye post, please email it to badwitch1234@gmail.com. Let me know what the photo shows and whether you want your name mentioned or not. For copyright reasons, the photo must be one you have taken yourself and you must confirm that you are submitting it for A Bad Witch's Blog.

Event: Georgiana Houghton: Spirit Drawings Study Day

Spirit drawings are the subject of a one-day symposium at The Courtauld Institute of Art on Wednesday 7 September. The symposium is being held in conjunction with the Georgiana Houghton: Spirit Drawings exhibition, which is currently on there.

The event offers a series of presentations, panel discussions and film screenings, bringing together a range of artists, curators, art historians and historians of spiritualism to explore the connections between art, spiritualism and creativity in the 19th century to the present day.
It is organised by Dr Sarah Victoria Turner (Paul Mellon Centre for Studies in British Art), Simon Grant (Editor, Tate Etc), Lars Bang Larsen (art historian, independent curator, and writer) Marco Pasi (University of Amsterdam), and Barnaby Wright (The Courtauld Gallery).

The day starts with the curators of the exhibition in conversation and is followed by panel discussions on symbolism/abstraction/colour, altered states/creativity and consciousness/ mediumship and the visual, and margins, centres, and webs, as well as films and talks.

The Georgiana Houghton: Spirit Drawings Study Day runs from 10.30am to 6pm on Wednesday 7 September at the Kenneth Clark Lecture Theatre, The Courtauld Institute of Art, Somerset House,
Strand, London WC2R 0RN.

Tickets are £10 general admission and £5 for students, staff/students and concessions, the weblink to book a place is: http://courtauld.ac.uk/event/georgiana-houghton-spirit-drawings-study-day

Who Will Be At The PF London Conference Tomorrow?

I'm really looking forward to the Pagan Federation London Conference tomorrow. The theme this year is Magic and Mind. It will be lovely to meet up with friends - some of whom I only know through social media, so this will be my first chance to catch up with them face to face. There's also a superb range of talks and workshops - here's the list from the programme:
  • Lyn Balis: Home Funerals
  • Rebecca Beattie: Twentieth Century Literary Pagans
  • Sascha Cooper: Goddess Belly Dance
  • Tomaš D'Aradia The Fool's Journey
  • Astrid Haszprunarova: Spiritual Alchemy: The Magic and Mysteries of Hermes
  • Philip Shallcrass: Death: The Ultimate Tickle
  • Gemma Stacey Animal spirit guides and animal psychic communication
  • Amie Summer: Conservation Medicine
  • Cat Treadwell: Inspiration in Darkness - Balance and Challenge
  • Caroline Wise: Goddess Oracles
  • Jonathan Woodley: Coming of Age: The unsubtle art of effective rites of passage
  • And also myself, Lucya Starza, giving a talk on Candle Magic
I almost wish I wasn't giving a talk though, because I think I'd rather be listening to the people speaking at the same time as me, 11am. It is also hard to choose what to go to next as there are three things that sound really interesting straight after that. However, I shouldn't really complain that there are too many interesting things to do, should I?

There's also an esoteric market and I'm intending to doing a bit of browsing and maybe some shopping. I know The Atlantis Bookshop is running the book stall there and I understand shop owner Geraldine Beskin should have a few copies of my own book - Pagan Portals - Candle Magic - on sale, which is very nice of her. After the closing ritual, there will be the chance to dance to live music from Spriggan Mist.

The Pagan Federation London Conference - Magic and Mind is on from 10.30am on Saturday 20 August at Westside Academy, 8-30, Galena Road, Hammersmith, London W6 0LT. I understand there is good disabled access in the building and the nearest Tube station is Ravenscourt Park. Tickets are best bought in advance and are £12 for PF members and £18 for non-members, but once you are inside all the talks and workshops are completely free to attend.

Feeling Sad on Black Cat Appreciation Day

I admit I am struggling a bit today. I keep seeing pictures of black cats on social media along with the information that it is Black Cat Appreciation Day. My own darling black cat Pharaoh died only a few days ago and I miss him so much. Here is one of the few pictures I took of him in the brief time he was my companion on this earth plane.

Since he died, I have seen two small white feathers in the garden. According to folklore, white feathers can be a message from a loved one who has passed into the spirit world. Happy hunting in the Summerlands, Pharaoh. The gifts are appreciated.
