Florence Farrr - an amazing woman who was a visionary practitioner of magic, a dramatist, a pioneer of women's rights, and leader of the Hermetic Order of the Golden Dawn - deserves to be as famous as the men of the Golden Dawn, but she isn't. Sue Terry and Caroline Wise (pictured above) have been trying to address that by running annual conferences with talks and performances about her work.
The 2025 event, Florence Farr and the Magical Imagination: A Dialogue of Vision, took place on Saturday 5th July at The College of Psychic Studies in London, SW7 2EB. It was a brilliant day with many great talks. I took the photos on this post when I was there.
The day included both a guided visualisation based on the Empress card in tarot, which was created by Florence Farr. It was called Scrying in the Spirit Vision. There was also a reading of her ritual: A Dialogue of Vision (picture below).
Isabella Javor explained and demonstrated Florence Farr's music and poetic influences. This covered her work with W.B.Yeats, chanting on a purpose-made instrument called the psaltery (pictured below).
Other talks included Sue Terry on Florence Farr's magical writing (pictured below), Andrew Collins on Florence's connections to Victorian Gothic including Bram Stoker's The Jewel of Seven Stars, Antonia Bond exploring Florence's Egyptian magic, and a look at another magical woman, artist Ithell Colquhoun, by Jacqui McIntosh.
Towards the end of her life, Florence Farr was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent a mastectomy in 1916. The event included a raffle, with all proceeds, along with a donation from The College of Psychic Studies, going to a breast cancer charity.
