Eclipses: This March sees a Blood Moon & Sun in Shadow

In the early hours of Friday March 14, people in England will be able to watch a lunar eclipse. It will be visible in London between 3.57am and 5.09am. Although Londoners will only see a partial eclipse, viewers in some parts of the world, including America and Ireland, will get to see the eclipse in full. This is the first lunar eclipse of 2025, the second taking place in early September.

Blood Moon

A lunar eclipse occurs when the sun and the moon are on opposite sides of the Earth. The Earth casts a shadow over the moon, making it turn red and giving it the name Blood Moon. A eclipse only happens when the moon is full.

The full moon is always a time when emotions run high, but the lunar eclipse changes the normal lunar energy. It can make things a more unstable. Anything in your life that's causing you stress or grief may come to a head. However, the lunar eclipse is a good time for doing divination to explore emotional responses to change as well as to see possibilities the future may hold.

Solar Eclipse

On March 29, there will be a partial solar eclipse. Londoners will be able to experience this from 8.50am to 12.43pm, with the maximum effect at 10.47am. Remember not to stare at the sun directly, as it can damage your eyes.

Solar eclipses have often been anticipated as times of change and great upheaval - more so than lunar eclipses. At the moment it seems change and upheaval are becoming a daily occurence. Nevertheless, as pagans and witches, we can harness the energy of a solar eclipse to work magic to bring about the changes we want. 

A solar eclipse can be a time to turn the tables on those in power, even to see unpleasant bosses or rulers get their comeuppance. In Mayan mythology, the God of Eclipses is Ah-Ciliz. According to Godchecker.com Ah-Ciliz is a servant of the sun who waits upon him at table. Every so often, he turns the tables on him by devouring him, which causes a solar eclipse. 

The Spring Equinox

The spring equinox falls on Thursday, March 20, in 2025. As pagans know, this is traditionally seen as a time of balance between the darker and lighter halves of the year. It is a day of equal day and night. With a lunar eclipse falling shortly before this festival, and a solar eclipse taking place shortly afterwards, the force of balance can be used to influence the forces of change that come with the solar and lunar eclipses.

Pagan Eye: Lunar Eclipse Viewed from South London

I got a great view of the lunar eclipse from my living room window in South London last night. Sadly, I only managed to take blurry photos of it. Here's the best one I took. If you took a better one and want to share it, I'd happily post it on my blog.

The Moon & Odd Lunar Effects: What Do You Think?

Kate Fowler, from Dorset, sent me this diagram she had drawn of how the moon appeared when she saw it from her garden last night.

She described it as "unique" and said: "What I saw was the moon with a rainbow ..... but with code circle outside the moon with 2 addition moons inside..... I didn’t take a photo, but I memorised what I saw and drew what I see. It’s hard to describe but I’m gonna show you what I drew and hope you will help me with the answer.

"Why am I seeing it like that? I have attached a photo..... hope you can help me....."

Well, I don't know exactly what caused the effects, but I have some ideas. Rings around the moon are rare, but I have seen one myself in the past and posted a photograph of one taken by James Wallace. You can see that here. It is also possible to get moonbows, which are pretty much like rainbows seen in sunlight, but much rarer and fainter. Here's a link to the Wikipedia entry.

I'm not quite sure what the triple moon that Kate saw was, but it might have been the planets Saturn and Jupiter, which appeared close to the moon last night. Here's a link about that.

But I can't say I am absolutely sure any of those cause the effects Kate drew - what do you think? And what do you think it might mean?  Do leave a comment.

If you look at the moon tonight from moonrise onwards in the UK, you might see another odd lunar effect as there is an eclipse, or a blood moon, which will peak at about 10.30 British Summer Time. Here's a link to an article about the eclipse.

Predictions: Storms, a Blood Moon and a Long Journey

Tonight there's a Blood Moon. It is going to be the longest lunar eclipse of the century, or so the news stories I've been reading say. Some of them are also prophesying doom and gloom.

Earthquakes and lightning are predicted, much like the old Creedence Clearwater Revival song. Even the weather forecast says thunder storms are likely.

A friend who I respect as an astrologer has told me that, due to several planets going retrograde at the time, it is a bad night to be driving anywhere.

Despite all that, driving somewhere is what I'll be doing. I'll be heading off for a long road trip with a pair of witchy friends just as the moon turns blood red.

The photo on the right shows a design on a t-shirt for Ambercon - a roleplaying game convention based on the fantasy book Nine Princes in Amber, by Roger Zelazny. It is a book that is heavily based on tarot cards and is one I love. I'm not actually going to a games convention this weekend, I'm just off on a holiday with witchy friends. I came across the t-shirt when I was doing my packing and felt it aptly illustrated the potential for trouble on the way.

Am I a bit nervous?  Well, we'll be three witches in a car in a thunderstorm on the night of a lunar eclipse, setting off for a potentially 10-hour drive. I'm really looking forward to it!

Penumbral Lunar Eclipse on the Night of August 7

There is a full moon tomorrow, 7 August, and a penumbral lunar eclipse that will be visible in London. It will be visible as the moon rises and will reach its maximum just after that, at 8.35pm London time. The eclipse will end at 8.50pm.

If the sky is clear, you should be able to see it if you find a high vantage spot with an unobstructed view to east-southeast. Pagan Eye: Last Night's Blood Supermoon

Here's a photo of Blood Supermoon taken at 3.30am this morning from my kitchen window. I decided to set my alarm to see it, but then also woke up just before 2am, just as the eclipse was starting too.  I had a look and then went back to bed to get a bit more sleep.

Very pleased to have witnessed this rare astronomical event even if my photo of it is a little blurry.

September 28: Blood Supermoon, Eclipse and Magic

If you stay up late tonight you will have a chance to witness a supermoon and a lunar eclipse. It is a particularly rare astronomical event as there have only been five supermoon lunar eclipses before this one since 1900 - in 1910, 1928, 1946, 1964 and 1982.

A supermoon happens when the Moon is closer to the Earth than usual, and tonight it is the closest it will be all year. When it rises in the night sky it will appear 14 per cent larger than usual, which should be pretty spectacular on its own. However, later that night – or rather very early the next morning – there will also be a lunar eclipse. The eclipse will begin at 2.07am in the morning of 28 September in London and last until 5.27am. The maximum effect will be at 3.47am. This event is also called a Blood Moon, because the moon will appear to turn blood red.

It should be really spectacular to watch – and the good news is that if the sky is clear, London is one of the places to get a perfect view. It will also be a great time for witchery. Spells work best when the moon is full, and the power of the moon will be particularly potent tonight. Eclipses are also the perfect time to work for change and for divination and introspection.

Of course the question a lot of people ask is, is a bloodmoon an omen of doom and gloom? Well, the time of the equinox always brings high tides and a supermoon can bring higher tides than usual, so I would say beware of flood warnings if you live near the coast. Apart from that, supermoons and eclipses are not to be feared.

One book on how to do eclipse magic is the Eclipse Magic Workbook by Mani Navasothy. It gives lots of ideas on how to use the power of eclipses to work magic for personal change and development.

Pagan Eye: Blood Moon at Easter's Lunar Eclipse

James C. Wallace II, astronomer, photographer and author of a series of fantasy novels set in the world of Oz, sent me this great picture of the lunar eclipse that took place on April 4 - Easter Saturday.

He said: "It would seem that good fortune blessed me yesterday morning with a perfect view of the lunar eclipse. Having photographed 18 of these prior to yesterday morning, I thought I would go for an artistic view this time. I think I succeeded. I hope you like this? This was taken right after totality began and about 15 minutes before moonset. I was outside Terre Haute, Indiana when I took this one."

He added: "BTW, you really should read my 3rd book; Family of Ozwhich features a blood-red moon (an eclipsed moon) and all of Oz howling at it."

Pagan Eye: Blood Moon in October 2014

Being sent this amazing image of last week's Blood Moon made up for the fact that the lunar eclipse that gave the moon a reddish hue wasn't viewable from the UK. The photo was taken by James C Wallace II, author of fiction set in the world of Oz. James lives in America where the eclipse was visible.

He said: "I thought you might enjoy the most recent lunar eclipse, which everyone seemed to refer to as the Blood Moon."

James is an astronomer as well as an author and has in the past very kindly sent me lots of other photos of the beautiful moon - you can see links to some of them at the bottom of this post.

Time for Change: Tuesday's Full Moon and Lunar Eclipse

As well as there being a full moon tonight - reaching its fullest at around 8.45am in London time tomorrow, Saturday 15 April - there is also a total lunar eclipse. It is the first of two total lunar eclipses in 2014 and is the first of a tetrad, meaning four total lunar eclipses in series.

While some fundamentalist Christians are saying that this series of four lunar eclipses - also known as "blood moons" because the celestial body takes on a red hue - heralds the End of Days, I think that's just as unlikely as any other end of the world prediction we've so far survived. If you are interested in reading more about the prophecy though, here's a link to a news story in the Express.

However, if you are into scrying and other types of divination, lunar eclipses are a good time to have a go. The energy of the blood moon can also be used for magical rituals and spells for personal transformation. As Mani Navasothy of Pagan Frontiers says in his book The Eclipse Magic Workbook,"Eclipses offer us unique and sometimes rare opportunities for doing special magical or psychic work that can be lifechanging."

If you want to make a big change in your life, now is a good time to make a start. Today, think about what transformation you really want, whether that is a new job, a change in a relationship, a house move or embarking on a new spiritual path. Then, at the time of the eclipse, write down your intention on a slip of paper as a promise to yourself. Fold the paper up and put it into your wallet or purse to keep with you at all times until the change manifests itself.

Those in eastern Australia, New Zealand, the Pacific, and North and South America will get to view the lunar eclipse fully, while in London we might be able to glimpse a penumbral eclipse at 5.55am, just before dawn.

The group will be meeting on the west side of the crown of the hill, in a grassy area next to a small grove of trees. Dark Moon: November's Full Moon and Lunar Eclipse

There's a full moon tonight - and also a lunar eclipse. It is the second of two lunar eclipses that have happened this year and should be just visible at moonrise in the UK. With the eclipse, it seems appropriate that the Celtic name for the full moon in November is Dark Moon.

Lunar eclipses only happen when the moon is full because that is when the moon is directly opposite Earth in relation to the sun. They are rare, however, because the plane at which the moon orbits the Earth is slightly tilted.

Many people believe that lunar eclipses are bad omens, although according to The Penguin Guide to the Superstitions of Britain and Ireland,by Steve Roud, there are no specific superstitions attached to eclipses of the moon or sun. Although people tend to think they are generally a time of bad luck, there are no time-honoured rituals that people in Britain do to try to stave off the imagined ill effects.

My own belief is that during a lunar eclipse our hidden fears can come unbidden into our thoughts and dreams - and it is a good time to face those fears and realise that, like a lunar eclipse, they probably aren't that bad after all.
