With the first stirrings of spring, it's time to start the drum roll for pagan festivals!  There are lots of weekend-long - and longer - magical events taking place this spring, summer and autumn. Here's a list of some of them in the UK or online. If you book early you can often get cheaper tickets, or ensure your place before they sell out! Pagan Dawns & a Nice Surprise from Atlantis Bookshop

I had an unexpected visit from Bali from The Atlantis Bookshop, in London, earlier this week. We weren't breaking the law, as she was officially delivering an exciting parcel! I had taken advantage of the shop's special bundle of five back issues of Pagan Dawn magazine for £18.75, with free delivery - but I wasn't anticipating the free delivery to be in-person.

Obviously the current restrictions mean I wasn't allowed to invite Bali inside my home, but we chatted briefly through the window and it was so lovely to see a real face of a lovely person I hadn't seen for ages. So looking forward to the time when I can go up to London and visit all the pagan shops there myself again.

The Atlantis Bookshop last weekend sent out a newsletter saying it had the current and several previous issues of Pagan Dawn for sale. Pagan Dawn is the journal of the Pagan Federation, with a wide range of news and articles about Paganism and related topics. It is published four times a year. I understand the bundle of five issues have now sold out, but you can still order individual copies - and other books - by post from the Atlantis Bookshop.

Event: PF Disabilities Team Online Imbolc Festival

Today is Imbolc, the pagan festival that celebrates the first signs of spring returning. The days are noticeably getting longer, snowdrops and primroses are blooming even in my city garden, while in the countryside baby lambs are being born .

However, not everyone can get outside to honour and enjoy the season. The Pagan Federation Disabilities Team has been putting on online festivals to mark the Wheel of the Year for some time now. This Saturday, February 3, the team is running an online Imbolc Festival. It starts at noon and here is the programme of talks listed so far:

Bastet Candle - Shopping at the PF London Conference

I bought this lovely Bastet goddess candle and annointing oil in the market at the PF London Conference on Saturday. Both the candle and oil were handmade by esoteric herbalist Cristina Pandolfo of Domina Lunae Apothecary Witchcraft Emporium.

I will burn the candle in memory of my lovely cat Pharaoh who died just over a week ago, after a sudden illness.

Domina Lunae Apothecary specialises in creating and selling handmade supplies for magical practices, healing processes, feminine witchcraft and women’s spirituality. I was very impressed with all the lovely products on the stall, which I was told are made with natural ingredients and magical intent, following lunar magic and esoteric herbalism principles.

The stall had a range of goddess candles and if I could have afforded to on the day I would have bought several.

PF London Conference - In Memory of Jean Williams

This year’s Pagan Federation London Conference was in honour of Jean Williams, an inspirational woman and high priestess who worked for the pagan community tirelessly throughout her life. She was a lovely person with a great sense of humour. I am glad to have met her on a few occasions, but wish I had known her better. She died last year shortly after launching her book The Play Goes On, and is very much missed.

At the conference, Morgana of PF International (pictured left) gave a talk about Jean Williams' life and legacy, including her work with Pagan Pathfinders and The Rainbow Bridge. The picture at the top shows a slide from Morgana’s talk with a photo of Jean and one of Morgana's memories of her.

Although the title of the conference was Magic and Mind, I made a comment to a friend on the day that it might have more aptly been named Death and Darkness. As well as the eulogy to Jean, there were talks by Lyn Balis on home funerals, Philip Shallcrass on death and Cat Treadwell on inspiration in darkness.

Yet none of these talks were gloomy – they all showed that death at the end of a long life is natural and not to be feared, while the “long dark night of the soul” can be a path to personal insight and growth. Philip Shallcrass’ talk was actually called Death: The Ultimate Tickle. He described his ability to see the spirits of some of those who have died and that in his experience death in some of its forms as a psychopomp, like the characters from Neil Gaiman’s comics and Terry Pratchett’s books, can have a sense of humour.

The programme wasn’t entirely about the darker side of life. I sadly missed the chance to go to workshops on animal spirit guides and the tarot, which were running alongside my own talk on candle magic. After that I went to a fascinating workshop on goddess oracles run by Caroline Wise. Other talks included Rebecca Beattie on 20th century literary pagans, Astrid Haszprunarova on spiritual alchemy, Amie Summer on conservation medicine and Jonathan Woodley on coming of age rites. There was also a chance to try belly dancing with Sascha Cooper and the day ended with music from Spriggan Mist.

There was a wonderful esoteric market, including stalls run by The Atlantis Bookshop, London Wildlife Trust, Domina Lunea Apothecary, Gemini Aspect pagan suppliers, Fox and Hare wand makers (pictured bottom right), Hendon Heathens, and Goddess in London (pictured above  right). I bought a lovely candle, which I am going to blog more about later, and I won a book called The Avalonians in the tombola.

But for me, the best bit of the day was meeting up with old friends and making a few new ones.

I almost wish I wasn't giving a talk though, because I think I'd rather be listening to the people speaking at the same time as me, 11am. However, I shouldn't really complain that there are too many interesting things to do, should I?

There's also an esoteric market and I'm intending to doing a bit of browsing and maybe some shopping. I know The Atlantis Bookshop is running the book stall there and I understand shop owner Geraldine Beskin should have a few copies of my own book - Pagan Portals - Candle Magic - on sale, which is very nice of her. After the closing ritual, there will be the chance to dance to live music from Spriggan Mist.

The Pagan Federation London Conference - Magic and Mind is on from 10.30am on Saturday 20 August at Westside Academy, 8-30, Galena Road, Hammersmith, London W6 0LT. I understand there is good disabled access in the building and the nearest Tube station is Ravenscourt Park. I'm running a candle magic workshop at Treadwell's Bookshop in London this Sunday and while I'm delighted that all the tickets have been sold, I realise that those who wanted to come along but couldn't will want to know about future dates.

Candle magic is a basic and central skill in the repertoire of pagans, in accordance with traditional spellcraft. My workshop covers basic techniques and a few advanced ones too. Everyone gets a chance to prepare a candle or two to take home with them, with all materials supplied. Tickets are £20, which includes all the candles needed.

I'm also going to be giving a talk about candle magic at the Pagan Federation London Conference on Saturday 20 August. The theme of the conference this year is Magic and Mind and I will be talking about how candles can help us get into the right frame of mind for magic to work as well as how candles can be used for scrying and divination.

The conference venue is Westside School, 8-30 Galena Road, Hammersmith, London, W6 0LT. Pagan Federation 45th Anniversary Celebration, May 1

There are still just a few tickets remaining for the Pagan Federation 45th Anniversary Celebration on May 1 in Brighton, at the same venue as the Folklore, Magic and Mysteries: Modern Witchcraft and Folk Culture in Britain exhibition.

The inaugural meeting of members of the Pagan Front, which later became the Pagan Federation, took place on 1st May 1971 in Chiswick, and was chaired by Doreen Valiente, who wrote a short ritual for the occasion. It therefore seems very appropriate to celebrate our 45th anniversary at Preston Manor, where material from the Doreen Valiente Collection is on display as part of their exhibition for the summer season:

The theme will be how we can learn from Doreen's approach and life as we work for the future of the Pagan Federation. Current plans are for Rebecca Beattie to talk about literary Pagans, Richard Levy to talk about Doreen's approach to making witchcraft more widely accessible, and Julie Belham-Payne to share some personal reminiscences.

The event will include a tour of the exhibition, possibly in several groups depending on numbers. During the event we will have exclusive use of Preston Manor. This event is open to all those 16 years old or over.
