Pagan Eye: An Alternative Market at Chislehurst Caves

I visited Orpington Alternative Markets Psychic Pop-Up at Chislehurst Caves yesterday and took the photo above. It's a wonderfully atmospheric venue, as you can see, in ancient chalk mines that date back to before Roman times and are supposedly haunted. Although it wasn't a massive event, it was friendly with a good variety of stalls selling witchy wares, people offering readings, and a cafe upstairs offering homemade food and drinks. What's more it was free to enter.

Witchcraft at Viktor Wynd's Museum of Curiosities

Drinking an absinthe cocktail shortly after breakfast might seem the height of decadence, but that's the kind of thing The Viktor Wynd Museum of Curiosities is about.

I took the photo on this post yesterday morning after setting up the tables for the first scrying workshop I'd taught there in person. It was in the Austin Osman Spare Room at the back, with pictures on the wall by the famous chaos magician: the perfect setting.

The workshop itself began at noon and the aforementioned absinthe cocktails were served as everyone arrived. Although it seemed decadent, it was quite possibly a perfect thing to drink before scrying. Wormwood, the bitter herb that gives absinthe its unique flavour, is supposed to enhance psychic powers. It's related to mugwort, which has similar magical properties. Both herbs are traditionally also used for cleansing. I always bring along an infusion of mugwort to clean the objects used in my class. The absinthe is an added extra.

I'll be teaching another class on practical witchcraft next Sunday, 19 November. It's a workshop on poppets and magical dolls. Everyone will make a traditional protective poppet to take home. Energy Work: What Will Stay and What Will Go?

This is the time of year for spring cleaning and part of that can involve a bit of decluttering. I’m not a fan of getting rid of stuff just because you haven’t used it in a while, but sometimes you need to make space or fancy a change. Here's a way of using your psychic senses to decide what will stay and what will go.

If you’re undecided about whether to keep an object, look at it carefully, examine it, and feel it. As well as checking if something could do with physically mending or cleaning, focus on how it makes you feel. What thoughts and emotions does it stir in you? Does it have a history, or a story to tell? If so, what? See if you can sense what energy it has.

Try closing your eyes. You might find it easier like that. Does that energy feel warm or cold, wet or dry, soft or hard? Does it have a colour or a sound or prompt memories? Try holding your hands a little way above it or around it. Do you get other impressions? Does the object now seem different to you than it did earlier? Is it something you want to keep or is it something you’ll be getting rid of?

There's no right or wrong answer except how you feel about it.

Divination: Dowsing Rods that Found a Roman Bathhouse

The dowsing rods in the picture to the right were ones used to discover a Roman bathhouse in Sussex and are on display in Battle Museum of Local History. A leaflet at the museum explains that the first evidence of human settlement in the area was found by dowser Gerald Brodribb when he was using the rods to trace a Roman road.

The photo at the bottom shows a scale model of the bathhouse remains. The rods and model are all on display. You can also try out some dowsing for yourself as the museum has another set of rods available for visitors to use.

My dad was a keen dowser. As a child I recall summer holidays to the countryside often included afternoons using his dowsing rods and pendulums to try to trace historic roads and ley lines. I recently rediscovered my dad's dowsing equipment and I'll be blogging more about that in the future.

Honeysuckle Tea for Lammas, Protection & Psychic Work

This is a cup of tea I brewed for Lammas, the festival of the first fruits of the harvest, using honeysuckle I picked from my garden. I collected a mugful of the flowers, washed them, put them in a teapot, poured on boiling water and left the brew to infuse. The resulting tea was a beautiful golden yellow colour and tasted delicately floral and slightly sweet - just like honeysuckle smells to be honest. It was really nice and refreshing.

Honeysuckle blooms all year round in my garden, but the flowers are particularly abundant at the moment. Magically, honeysuckle is said to promote psychic powers and can be used in spells for abundance, according to Rachel Patterson in her book A Kitchen Witch's World of Magical Plants and Herbs. It would be perfect to drink before doing a manifestation spell or a guided visualisation, such as this one called The Wise Woman's Cottage. According to folklore, if it grows around your home it will protect the property and all inside from ill-wishing. I suspect the scent alone would sweeten up any visitors walking through your garden.

As well as making honeysuckle tea, I'm planning on using the vines to weave baskets. I've not done much basketweaving before, so it will be an experiment. If anyone has any recommendations for books or other tuturials on crafting with honeysuckle, please leave a comment.

Questions on Astral Travel and Out-of-Body Experience

Astral travel is the subject of my post today, thanks to a fascinating question sent by Westley when I asked for suggestions for things to write about on A Bad Witch's Blog. Westley wrote:

"I guess my question is; have you practiced astral projection and is it possible for us to leave our bodies and explore the astral plane, or is the practice of astral projection merely deep meditation accompanied by disillusionment...? If in fact a real practice and if we can leave our bodies, would you suggest casting a circle before attempting such practice?"

What is the Astral Plane?

The astral plane is generally thought of as a place where spirits dwell or where spirits can travel. In some esotoric or religious paths it's thought of a region between the earthly plane and other dwelling places for souls after death. Some magical practitioners use the astral plane for non-corporeal work including casting circles of protection to keep out unwanted entities or creating sacred spaces. You don't actually need to astral travel or have an out-of-body experience in order to work with astral forces. Casting a circle is a particular example - and yes, I would generally recommend doing that before any magical or psychic work, especially planned astral travel.

My personal perspective is that it's easier to glimpse the astral than to do astral projection, and that's where any trainee witch should start. As you cast a circle, visualise the protective energy around you and try to sense it there. You might see it or feel it or you might intuitively know where it is. Scrying is another way of trying to view things on the astral plane, using a crystal ball, dark mirror or bowl of water. Lucid dreaming and trance states can also be used for astral work.

Astral Temples

Some covens create an astral temple to use for group rituals when they can't meet up in person. One method is for all members to agree on what the temple should look like. It doesn't have to be a classical temple - it could look like a grove of trees, a witch's cottage or a mountain top. They can then use trancework, shamanic journeying techniques or visualisation exercises to go there either in spirit or in their mind's eye. They don't actually need to send their spirit there via an OOB experience. The more they work with the temple space, the stronger it becomes. At times when they can't meet up in person, they can all agree to do the same ritual at the same time in their own spaces but visualising visiting the astral temple first. Again, it isn't essential for coven members to astrally project their spirits there for the link between the group to be effective. The witch who trained me was a Jungian counsellor and she said that was because our spirits are all actually connected through the collective unconscious.

Astral Projection and Out-of-Body Experience

My own experience is that projecting my spirit out of my body is far more difficult than peering into the astral while staying in my body. It's more risky, so do cast that circle and practice astral viewing before travelling out into the spirit realm. One book I would recommend that clearly explains techniques for astral projection is Pagan Portals - Meditation, by Rachel Patterson. It's aimed specifically at pagans and witches. The first part covers basic meditation techniques, but then goes into a wide range of techniques to get your consciousness outside your physical body. I found the book helpful, as before trying Rachel's suggestions I'd only ever had actual out-of-body experiences when very ill. I don't recommend getting ill for spiritual development purposes, but I will describe one experience I had

I was on a boat off the coast of Norway in the Arctic Circle, hoping to see the Northern Lights. One night, there was a storm and I was sea-sick. I lay in my cabin unable to move without retching. When there was an announcement that the Northern Lights had appeared in the sky, I tried to get up, but the motion of the ship made me vomit immediately. I don't recall ever feeling so awful before. I lay back on the bed, but then something strange happened. It seemed as though I was floating out of my body. I drifted towards the ceiling of my cabin, then through that to the weather deck, then up into the air. I could see the Northern Lights in the night sky. I could see other passengers around me watching them.

Then, I started to see more than that - I could see spirits among the lights. There were faces of old men who looked like ancient Sami people. They seemed dour, with formidable expressions, and I wasn't sure they approved of me or of any of what they were looking down at from their place in the dancing lights. Then I noticed another face - that of a woman with blond hair and a woven shawl or head-covering of some kind - she spoke to me. She said: "They aren't as stern as they look. I was a traveller here myself once."

After that I drifted back down, through the deck, into my cabin and back into my body. I realised I didn't feel nearly so seasick too. I did manage to see the Northern Lights in person at other times on that cruise, but I never again saw faces in them.

Of course I realise my experience could have been just my imagination. However, as I wrote in answer to the question "What Do You Do When Others See Things You Can't?", what's most important in spiritual work is that it means something to the person themselves. So, in answer to Westley's question, I do believe it's possible to have an out-of-body experience, but it doesn't matter if you find it difficult to do. I'm a very earthy kind of witch and most of the work I do is practical magic, divination, and celebrating the Wheel of the Year.

Testing what you see when scrying or astral travelling to verify whether what you saw was real or imaginary is worth doing, but don't be disillusioned too quickly. Spiritual paths are more about self-discovery and learning than about achieving quick results.

What Do You Do When Others See Things You Can't?

What do you do when others say they can see strange things, but you can't? And how do you classify it?

When I invited people to suggest things for me to write about on A Bad Witch's Blog, Fiona was the first to reply. She wrote:

"Seeing things that are not there. Or rather looking for things that someone can see but not you. Physical things that people are sure they have seen but are not apparent to anyone else. Not necessarily ghosts. Perhaps buildings or items or animals.
" When I was a chld , if I was in a bad mood, my mother would say "You've got the monkey on your back". Probably a throwback to demons, but some people claim to see such things.
"What would this be classed as? (Probably covering various disciplines here)."

I think it's a very interesting question and one I've thought about when scrying alongside other witches or teaching divination classes. When people look into a crystal ball, dark mirror or cauldron of water for answers to questions or clues about what the future might hold, the psychic impressions they get are personal. With that kind of psychic work, I've not yet found a way of completely experiencing what others are experiencing, even though we might be staring into the same cauldron of water. Afterwards everyone is likely to say they got different messages. Some will be adamant they saw nothing except what was physically there, some will report vague psychic impressions, some will say they saw movie-like scenes played out before their eyes. They're all valid responses.

When Fiona put her question on my Facebook author page, Gaybrielle replied: "My belief is that we see whatever is meant for us. This past year I've lost that notion that people will think I'm crazy if I speak of my gifts, and that's what it is, A gift, to hear, see, feel all the magick. I'm in tune now."

That's a good response. When I'm scrying with others I don't question what they say they experienced. It doesn't matter if they saw something that couldn't be recorded with a camera or if the images were only in the mind. What's important is that they found something in answer to their question. They can mull over the symbolism and significance and what that might mean to them personally. It's their truth and only matters to them.

Ghosts, Demons and Scammers

My attitude is different when people are trying to make money out of things they claim they've seen that others can't. I very much object to fraudulent mediums taking advantage of the bereaved by claiming they can contact people or animals who have passed when all they are doing is cold reading. They aren't seeing into the spirit realm, they're making high-probability guesses and picking up on things like body language.

I'm definitely not saying all mediums are fraudulent or that no one can see ghosts. I've experienced what I believe is contact with spirits myself and it's very common for someone who has lost a loved one to sense their continued presence. Again, I accept what they say. It's their truth and I'm not going to try to strip that away from them. I regard people's pesonal spiritual beliefs as their own business. I only get into debunker mode if someone's trying to con other people.

Another scam is supposed psychics claiming they can see someone has a negative energy attached to them, or even a demon. The scammer then says they can get rid of the attachment at a price. Be very, very wary if anyone tries to get you to pay for this kind of service. If you're worried you might have an unwanted "monkey on your back", my advice is do some cleansing rituals. Put salt into your bathwater. Do a smoke cleansing of your home. Open the doors and windows then get a broom and visualise sweeping negative energy out. Tell the unwanted house guest to go. Those inexpensive techniques are probably all you need.

Classification

Fiona asked how you classify things you can't see but others claim they can. Second sight is probably the closest general term for the power to perceive things that aren't physically present. There might be better terms to use - if you can think of one, please leave a comment.

Review: Psychic Spellcraft - Divination & Intuition Rituals

Psychic Spellcraft - A Modern-Day Wiccapedia of Divination and Intuition Rituals is one of those books that's lovely to read in the hardcover version. It feels pleasingly tactile and has delightful illustrations inside. The content's pretty good too.

Authors Shawn Robbins and Leanna Greenaway have put a lot of thought into compiling this "Wiccapedia", as they call it. It offers ways to boost your psychic senses, an introduction to wide range of divination methods, and other practices such as lucid dreaming and communicating with spirits. You don't have to identify as Wiccan to appreciate it though, as the techniques offered are ones anyone can try. In fact, many of the things described are general esoterica like crystal ball reading, tarot, palmistry and dowsing. There are spells to help you get results, but they aren't specifically Wiccan either. The book is in the 'Modern-Day Witch' series, and I think that more general phrase describes it perfectly.

Publisher Sterling gives this description:

"Shawn Robbins and Leanna Greenaway explore how to harness nature’s magick to tap into your psychic intuition and hone your divination abilities. They cover everything from sharpening your psychic skills and intuition; ESP training; psychic meditation techniques; astral projection; and connecting with spirits and the cosmos. Numerous divination methods are covered: tarot; scrying (crystal ball gazing); crystal divination; numerology; palmistry; pendulums; reading tea leaves; lucid dreaming; psychic plant power ― even how to read clouds and candle wax."

Psychic Spellcraft would be ideal for anyone starting out on a path of magical exploration and wanting to get an overview of the many possible avenues of psychic work. It's a great introductory guide and reference book. Although doesn't go into huge depth in any area, it offers the basics in a delightful and highly inspiring way.

Smoke & Mirrors: Psychic Games & Magic Illusion Sets

As well as being a blogging witch, I've always enjoyed playing board games. So, I was fascinated to see quite a few games at Smoke and Mirrors: The Psychology of Magic, an exhibition currently on at the Wellcome Collection, in London.

I also remember that back in the 1970s there was quite a fashion for board and card games with themes relating to psychic and magical powers - some more serious than others. Information on the wall at Smoke and Mirrors said:

Extra Sensory Perception (ESP) and TelepathyThe idea that we have hidden psychic powers is currently rejected by mainstream science but continues to inspire the performances of our most successful magicians. Extra Sensory Perception (ESP) was a term used by psychologist JB Rhine in the 1930s to describe psychic abilities like telepathy and clairvoyance. The 1960s and 70s saw a resurgence of interest in ESP with the US military even exploring its potential for warfare. Research tool that were originally designed for testing ESP in the laboratory - such as Telepetha Cards - became popular with the general public, and board games offering to reveal hidden ESP powers sold in the millions.

The picture at the top shows Kreskin's ESP game and the one to the right shows a set of Telepetha Cards. I've never played either of those games - though I'd be interested in trying them. My dad did own a set of Zener cards, which I still have. These were originally created by Karl Zener, a colleague of JB Rhine, and they used them in ESP experiments.

Zener cards have symbols on them. One person picks a card at random, and another person tries to psychically see what the symbol is without looking at the card. Telepetha cards look a bit similar. Kreskin's ESP game uses a pendulum to supposedly test whether you have ESP.

Smoke and Mirrors also had a display showing various sets of magic illusions people could buy as toys or for home entertainment from the mid 19th century up to the present day. The picture to the left shows an old one.

I earlier blogged about a homemade ouija board at the Wellcome Collection, on loan from the Museum of Witchcraft and Magic. Ouija boards were also originally designed for home entertainment purposes and were even sold as toys. It is only relatively recently that some people have started to consider them as being particularly dangerous occult tools.

Smoke and Mirrors is on the theme of what conjuring tells us about the human mind. It is about psychology and deception, so generally offers a sceptical view of things like seances as well as showing how stage illusions can fool us. Things To Look For In A Reputable Online Psychic

I normally blog about pagan events in and near London, because that's where I live. However, I sometimes also mention interesting things that are taking place in other parts of the UK, especially if people let me know about them.

Shopping: Pictures of Stepping Stones, Greenwich

Yesterday, for the first time, I went inside Stepping Stones of Greenwich - a lovely psychic shop in south-east London.

I'd often gone past Stepping Stones on a bus in the evening after work while on my way to a friend's house and always thought I'd really like to visit the shop when it was open. Yesterday I was on the same bus visiting my friend, but earlier in the day as we were both still on holiday. So, I decided to get off a few stops early and do a bit of browsing.

It was absolutely delightful to walk out of a grey, wet street into an Aladdin's cave of crystals and other treasures, all sparkling with festive fairy lights. The shop was warm and friendly and there were so many tempting things to look at.

Stepping Stones Greenwich offers readings and therapies as well as selling a lovely selection of crystals, candles, incense, essential oils, ornaments, books and tarot decks.

I also thought I'd try out the camera on my new Kindle Fire I was given for Yule. I took the photos you can see on this page and I was quite pleased with them considering they were all taken without using a flash.

An Introduction to the Main Points of Palmistry

Here is a wonderful post covering everything you need to know to start off with palmistry. It was written by Jack Bird, of Stepping Stones in Greenwich.

As the name suggests, palmistry involves the reading of the lines on your palm and the shape of your hand, all to help recognise who you are and where you’re headed in life. It’s more about personal understanding than something like fortune-telling, which would detail exterior factors.

Our palms provide a map to our energies; with the right hand offering a look at the past and the left indicating character traits and destiny. These are reversed for left-handed people, but palm reading can’t be done accurately without training. Professional palm readers and psychics train for years to understand what each crevice and crease can represent, and flipping through a book on palmistry won’t cut it. However, if you want a basic understanding of what the lines on the palm represent and what palmistry is, then this post is perfect for you.

The Major Lines

Our palms contain three major lines – the head line, the life line and the heart line.

Head line: This line sits between the thumb and index figure, and runs horizontally across the palm. This details psychological and mental information about the person, as well as information about their intuitive abilities and intellectual levels.

Life line: Beginning between the thumb and index finger, the line the runs down the base of the thumb to connect with the wrist. It is a misconception that the line reveals how much longer you will live and instead focuses on your general wellbeing and the challenges that may come your way.

Heart line: This is located above both lines and starts under the middle finger, reaching towards the little finger. Many people take an interest in palm reading to find out more about their love life, and this is where the heart line comes in – which is appropriately also known as the love line. This usually represents a person’s outlook on love, how deeply one can love and how smoothly a relationship may be going.

What else can be read on a palm?

Outside the major lines just detailed, there are also secondary lines that reveal more about you. They are generally fainter than the major lines, and reveal things about your strengths, weaknesses, talents and interests. They can also cross over bumps, which palm readers refer to as ‘mounts’ and believe are related to planets along with our emotional/physical selves. Each palm has seven mounts that coincide with Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Mercury, Venus, the sun and the moon.

Markings are not like lines, in that they come in many forms and can symbolise both negative and positive interruptions in the lines and mounts of the palm. They can resemble stars, grills, triangles, circles and squares and can be warnings of events like separations, health problems and trauma. However, they can also represent resolution and recovery too, with the location of them on the palm being an important factor.

If you want an accurate interpretation of all the complexities of these marks without taking a study course yourself, talk to a fully trained palm reader. The psychic vision of the reader can fill in any gaps that palm reading cannot reach.

Review: Mediumship - An Introductory Guide

The skill of mediumship - generally defined as mediating communications between spirits of the dead and living - is something I've long wanted to learn. So, I was delighted to be given a copy of a new book called Mediumship: An Introductory Guide to Developing Spiritual Awareness and Intuition.

It is in the Hay House Basics series, which means it is a straightforward guide aimed at beginners, The author is Gordon Smith, who is a respected medium. As I hoped, it offers an great overview of exactly what mediumship is and how to go about learning to do it.

The book also explains that mediumship is not something that can be learnt quickly. Having a natural talent is good, but just because you are psychic, can see ghosts or have clairvoyant abilities, doesn't mean you are a medium yet (to paraphrase Yoda).

Gordon explains that it is vital to spend a lot of time practising to tell the difference between spirit communication, things picked up empathically, stuff from your own subconscious, guesswork and pure fantasy. It is also important not to get too emotionally affected by other people's grief, which can happen if you are meeting people who want contact with loved ones who have passed.

He recommends spending a lot of time using meditation techniques and also learning how to achieve a balanced mental state. He also recommends finding a good training circle with an experienced teacher rather than purely trying to learn as a solitary - although reading this introductory book and doing the exercises in it are good first steps.

Publisher Hay House says about the book: "The function of a medium is to be a conduit between this life and the afterlife or spirit world. Every medium is intuitive or psychic, but not every psychic is a medium. This book explores how to still the mind to enable spirits to communicate with you, sitting in the power and opening up to authentic messages, working with the aura and reading the signs and symbols that surround people and connecting to your spirit guide and learning their signature or calling card and much more!"

Wicca and Mediumship
My own specific interest in learning about mediumship grew when I discovered that Gerald Gardner, the founder of modern Wicca, had insisted that his early priestesses had mediumistic abilities. He felt that this was useful - if not essential - for channelling the words of the Goddess. Later, his High Priestess Doreen Valiente wrote (or at least largely rewrote) The Charge of the Goddess to be spoken by Wiccan priestesses if they felt that, despite the Goddess being invoked, they were not receiving messages to relate.

Nowadays, high levels of mediumship skill have less of a focus in many Wiccan rites - at least in my experience. I think it would be good to perhaps return to basics on that front. I would like to see more covens also having mediumship training circles, where priests and priestesses could learn to be better at hearing the words of the Gods and Goddesses of the Craft, as well as the words of the spirits of our ancestors.

Magic School: Witchcraft, Tarot, Shamans & Psychics

Wicca Moon is running a series of magical workshops this autumn in the shop at 50 Well Hall Rd, London, SE9 6SH. Here are the details:

Psychic Development
Four-week afternoon workshop starting on Wednesday 9 November. Classes are from noon to 2pm every Wednesday. This is an ongoing development circle, so after doing this series of classes you can go on to the next level. Cost is £60 for the four classes.

Advancing the Tarot
An afternoon of learning about the court cards in the Wicca Moon Tarot on Saturday 12 November from noon to 4pm. This is an intermediate level course for those who have done the introductory class. The cost is £20 for the session.

Introductory Beginners' Shamanic Workshop
Four-week afternoon workshop starting on Thursday 17 November. The cost is £60 for four classes teaching about the ancient art of shamanism. Further workshops will follow on from this introductory series.

Introduction to the Wicca Moon School of Witchery
This free event on Saturday 10 December is an introduction to Wicca Moon's own school of spellcrafting. Run by Shirlee, this class explains what the school teaches and gives you a chance to join on the day or book up later online if you want to. The class runs from 2pm to 5pm and is completely free.

Event: Seance at the Mind Body Soul Experience

Fancy taking part at a seance? There is one taking place at the Mind Body Soul Experience at Alexandra Palace next weekend.

You ca join Charlotte Codrai, a psychic of Clairvoyant London, as she attempts to communicate with the ghosts hiding at the home of the Mind Body Soul Experience.

Alexandra Palace is a building with almost 150 years of history, and a turbulent one at that. It has been destroyed by fire twice, and over the years has been the home of the BBC, an internment camp during the First World War, and has hosted thousands of entertainment events.

Book Review: Crystal Skulls by Judy Hall

Let's face it, there's been a load of cobblers written about crystal skulls in the past and in terms of fakes and forgeries they are up there with the Loch Ness Monster.

However, few can deny that crystals skulls look awe-inspiring and even the histories of the forgeries are amazing tales. What's more, plenty of people find them brilliant to use for scrying and channelling as well as for a focus for shamanic journeying.

If you want to read a really sensible book about the history of crystal skulls and how to use them psychically, then I would recommend the new Crystal Skulls: Ancient Tools for Peace, Knowledge and Enlightenment by Judy Hall. It is straightforward, well researched and very informative on the facts and fiction surrounding the world's famous crystal skulls and on how to use the type you can easily buy in shops or online.

As publisher Red Wheel said in its press release that came with my copy of the book:

Crystal skulls are human or other skull carvings often made of clear or milky white quartz or other semi-precious materials. Some are allegedly pre-Columbian Mesoamerican artifacts. Several, more recently carved, can be found in the permanent collections of a number of world-class museums, including the Smithsonian and the British Museum. In occult and metaphysical circles, the skulls have magical and healing qualities.

Obviously, the jury is still out on whether those "allegedly pre-Columbian Mesoamerican artifacts" are genuinely ancient, and Judy Hall is not trying to claim otherwise. Her field of expertise is the use of crystals for healing, personal development, psychic and magical work. She is the author of numerous books on crystals, including the famous Crystal Bible series. That is also where this book really shines, giving clear and straightforward instructions on how to choose a crystal skull, how to cleanse and attune to them, and also various ways of working with them.

Not all crystal skulls represent human heads - some are carved into the shape of animals or mythical beasts. One example is the dragon crystal skull you can see in the photo on the right, which belongs to Judy herself. A chapter at the end of Crystal Skulls explains how these can be used to help connect with power animals and tap into the symbolism of magical creatures.

I have to say it has made me want to do some mystical shopping this bank holiday weekend and maybe buy myself a crystal skull. I've never tried scrying with a crystal skull before and I am keen to give it a go.

Magic School: Anthropology, Paranormal and Culture

Goldsmiths University is running a course this autumn called Anthropology, The Paranormal, and Popular Culture. Here are the details from the website:

On this course, we explore what is meant by 'the paranormal', and examine the claim that the intersection between paranormal beliefs with popular culture – both online and within televisual media (including films, TV dramas and reality shows such as the ‘Paranormal Activity’ franchise, ‘Supernatural’ and ‘Most Haunted’’) - constitutes an alternative to ‘traditional’ forms of religiosity in contemporary Euro-American societies. Specifically, we will examine what the proliferation of beliefs in ghosts, ufos, psychic powers, and Bigfoot in popular culture can tell us about modern society. Drawing on a multidisciplinary academic perspectives – including anthropology, folklore studies, psychology, sociology, and cultural and media studies – we will investigate the psychological mechanisms and socio-cultural contexts that shape our interest in and fascination with the paranormal.

This is a ten-week short course with weekly sessions from 6.30pm-8.30pm at Goldsmiths, University of London.

It runs from Thursday, 6 October 2016 - Thursday, 15 December 2016. The cost for the course is £260.
