Pagan Eye: Austin Osman Spare Exhibition at Atlantis

The photo shows a corner of the current exhibition at Atlantis Bookshop in London. It's on the work of Austin Osman Spare. Commemorating the 70th anniversary of the artist and magician's death, the exhibition offers a glimps into his writing and illustrations.

Occult London: Atlantis Bookshop Celebrates Crowley

"Do what thou wilt shall be the whole of the Law" is Aleister Crowley's most famous quote, and it comes from The Book of the Law.

Every year, the Atlantis Bookshop in London celebrates the anniversary of Crowley's reception of The Book of the Law by publicly declaring the three chapters, over three days. There's an open invitation to pop in and experience this annual occult event. I was there yesterday and listened to Geraldine Beskin reading Chapter One – Nuit (pictured above).

Today, Thursday 9th April, you can go along to hear Chapter Two – Hadit, starting at noon. At the same time on Friday you can hear Chapter Three – Ra Hoor Khuit.

What's special this year is that from now until Friday 17th April the shop is also hosting an exhibition of magical robes and handcrafted ritual artifacts relating to Thelema, the magical tradition founded by Aleister Crowley. The Art and Beauty of True Will is the creation of the artistic workshop LOGOS 373. You can see a photograph of part of it below.

Happy Birthday to 3 Magical London Locations

Three of London's best-loved magical venues celebrated birthdays over the Spring Equinox. Pictured on this post is the oldest of them: The Atlantis Bookshop. The esoteric bookshop and hub for occult gatherings has been at 49a Museum Street, Bloomsbury, for 104 years. Proprietors Geraldine and Bali invited customers old and new into the shop on Saturday to enjoy a glass of bubbly and cake.

The College of Psychic Studies is 100 years old. On Friday, the venerable seat of learning about all things psychic had a special evening at its beautiful venue at 16 Queensberry Place, South Kensington. I went along and enjoyed a glass of wine or two and a chance to chat with staff and members. Everyone who attended was invited to do a little springtime spellwork by planting a seed and making a wish. I'll be blogging more about that tomorrow.

Wicca Moon, the lovely witchy shop in Eltham, had a 21st birthday tea party on Friday afternoon. Sadly I wasn't able to get along for that as I was busy working then.

I wish all three magical venues very happy solar returns, and hope they will be celebrating more years of success in future.

Art: “Nobut Summat” at the Atlantis Bookshop

Atlantis Boookshop in London currently has an exhibition called “Nobut summat”, which in the Yorkshire dialect means: “Something… or nothing”. It's a collection of tiny frames containing found objects as a record of spirit of place and popular culture. This is what the artist, Steve Sheasby, says about his work:

“Growing up in West Yorkshire in the 1970s, I was deeply affected by the declining industrial landscape. I trained for three years at the Royal College of Art, but afterwards was content to spend three decades restoring other people’s artworks. It was only when I began training in psychic mediumship — with Gary Wright, the medium-in-residence at the Atlantis Bookshop — that a shift occurred and creativity started to flow through me. I asked myself a question: could a Spirit Art be created with just a few found objects? The artist as intuitive archivist. This exhibition is the culmination of that two-year journey. I hope you enjoy it.”

Pagan Eye: Well Hung Art at Atlantis Bookshop

I went to see the The Well Hung Art Exhibition that's currently on in the underground temple at The Atlantis Bookshop in London, and I took this photo. This is what shop owners Bali and Geraldine Beskin say about it on their website:

"We are absolutely delighted to be able to bring to our customers this marvellous collection of art in a wide variety of media, many of which are available for purchase at this one-of-its-kind exhibition. Coinciding with Pride Month, we present 70 works of art from over 40 artists from all areas of the queer community, and from all parts of the globe."

Curator Gary Wright said:

“The Atlantis Bookshop has always been a place of safety for occultists. It was where you could gently go and find your magical tribe – your community of magicians, tarot readers, witches, druids etc. Some well-known people have been patrons of the shop – Aleister Crowley, Austin Spare, Doreen Valiente, Dion Fortune, Gerald Gardner – and anybody within the occult community has always known and supported the shop. However, what isn’t so well known is the shop has always been a great champion of the queer community, what is now called the LGBTQ+ community. It’s equally been a safe space for people of all sexual orientations and identities to come and be welcomed.”

Bookshop Day: Where to Browse Magic Tomes in London

Today is National Bookshop Day, an annual celebration of high street bookshops. It offers a reminder that real bricks-and-mortar shops contribute to our communities as well as offering a service for their customers. Personally, I much prefer the experience of browsing in a bookshop to choose what I want to read, rather than selecting something online. I also know I can get great advice from the staff who work there.

As I'm a London witch, I'm highlighting these three fabulous independent esoteric bookshops in my city:

Pagan Eye: Renate von Charlottenburg's Magical Art

Here's a photo of artist Renate von Charlottenburg at the Atlantis Bookshop in London during the launch party for her exhibition: Visualisations: Magical Drawings. I was delighted to be invited to the preview evening to see the art and meet the artist as well as catch up with friends over a glass of wine. Renate's pictures are delightful. They show images inspired by fairy tales as well as the world around us. This is what it says on the Atlantis website:

"For her, drawing is not an end in itself; rather, it is the artistic opportunity to fathom, experience, and make visible the being and essence of things behind the outward appearance... Through Renate von Charlottenburg’s metacultural, meta-religious and cosmopolitan approach and perspective, her drawings are able to not only lay bare the roots of Western European culture and attitudes but also to furnish insight into the foundations of other world views, such as that of East Asia. The delicate, classical and familiar storytelling style of the artist’s pictures makes it easy for viewers to engage with them and immerse themselves."

Renate von Charlottenburg is a German artist who has been drawing since she was a child. I chatted to her at the event and it emerged that we share a love of cats. Her own feline friends appear in many of her pictures. The exhibition, Visualisations: The Magical Drawings of Renate von Charlottenburg, is in the Gardner Room, downstairs at the Atlantis Bookshop, 49A Museum St, London WC1A 1LY. It's open daily, Monday to Saturday, 11am to 6pm, until 5 May.

Pagan Eye: Moon Books Goddess Titles at Atlantis

This picture of a shelf at The Atlantis Bookshop was taken by kitchen witch and fellow Moon Books author Rachel Patterson. She told me: "I was up in London yesterday and quickly popped into The Atlantis book store. Found a nice selection of Pagan Portals books!"

Rachel took the photo and kindly let me post it on my blog. If you spot any Moon Books titles on bookshop or pagan store shelves, do take a picture and let me know! Authors love to see their writing in real physical shops.

The Atlantis Bookshop hosted the launch event for Every Day Magic - A Pagan Book of Days a few years ago. Every Day Magic is a community book published by Moon Books, which I edited and contributed to. Some of the entries were written by Geraldine Beskin, who runs the shop with her daughter Bali.

Pagan Eye: The Atlantis Bookshop Centenary Window

The Atlantis Bookshop in London is celebrating its 100th birthday. The lovely occult shop has been serving London's esoteric community for a century, as the window display in the photograph shows. Last weekend, Bali and Geraldine, the proprietrixes of The Atlantis Bookshop, invited customers to wish them many happy returns with tea and cake and other refreshments. There will be more events taking place over the next few months.

Pagan Eye: Supervision - Exhibition at Atlantis Bookshop

I went to see the art exhibition that's currently on in the underground temple at The Atlantis Bookshop in London, and I took this photo. The exhibition is called Supervision and displays art by Cathy Ward. The description on Atlantis' website says:

"As though wafting silently and invisibly through the ether, the powers of todays surveillance state - or state of being – both protect and cause unfathomable harm. All-seeing eyes, sprites and spirits, demons and imps, agents provocateurs, the law. We/they can and do look back and to the future willingly or not as we live under various forms of surveillance and supervision.
"The centrepiece of this exhibition is a circular piece called SISTER MOON. As well as the Moon being the one, true, all-seeing eye of our Inner and Outer worlds, this reactor piece represents a focus on the energies we increasingly need to work with using mythical beliefs as Humankind is lost unless we call on a variety of supernatural powers to help us. Cathy Ward is showing 16 of her fine-line drawings of ‘vibrations and landscapes of consciousness’. and other work."

Liberty Realm, the first critical monograph of Ward’s work was published by Strange Attractor in 2020 and is available to purchase. There are also other items of interest for sale, including a cloak from a Buffalo Bill Wild West show, 1930s' Skotographs made by Spiritualist Madge Donohoe, and a 100-year-old crystal knife.

Pagan Dawns & a Nice Surprise from Atlantis Bookshop

I had an unexpected visit from Bali from The Atlantis Bookshop, in London, earlier this week. We weren't breaking the law, as she was officially delivering an exciting parcel! I had taken advantage of the shop's special bundle of five back issues of Pagan Dawn magazine for £18.75, with free delivery - but I wasn't anticipating the free delivery to be in-person.

Obviously the current restrictions mean I wasn't allowed to invite Bali inside my home, but we chatted briefly through the window and it was so lovely to see a real face of a lovely person I hadn't seen for ages. So looking forward to the time when I can go up to London and visit all the pagan shops there myself again.

The Atlantis Bookshop last weekend sent out a newsletter saying it had the current and several previous issues of Pagan Dawn for sale. Pagan Dawn is the journal of the Pagan Federation, with a wide range of news and articles about Paganism and related topics. It is published four times a year. I understand the bundle of five issues have now sold out, but you can still order individual copies - and other books - by post from the Atlantis Bookshop.

London's Esoteric Shops Welcoming Customers Back

Here's an update on London's esoteric shops and witchcraft suppliers, most of which are now open again:

Atlantis Bookshop
The Atlantis Bookshop will be open again from this Friday, 4th September. The shop will be open to customer three days a week, Friday, Saturday, and Monday, from 10.30am until 5pm. Everything has been cleaned, tidied and reorganised, and all the shelves labelled. You must wear a mask and use the hand sanitizer to enter. The first 98 customers will receive a glass of bubbles to celebrate Bali and Geraldine (pictured, photo supplied by Atlantis) being back. Atlantis Bookshop is at 49a Museum Street, London, WC1A 1LY. Watkins Bookshop
Watkins has been open since the end of July. The opening hours are 11am to 6.30pm, Monday to Sunday. They have installed protective screens at the tills and customers are required to wear a mask in store, for everyone's safety. Watkins is at 19-21 Cecil Ct, London WC2N 4EZ. Buddha on a Bicycle
This shop selling Buddhist and Hindu items, as well as crystals, reopened in August after redecoration. It is at 27 Endell St, West End, London, WC2H 9BA. You can find out more at its website.

House of Spells
Magical merchandise shop House of Spells is open, with social distancing in place. It is a two-minute walk from Leicester Square tube station at 69-71 Charing Cross Rd, West End, London WC2H 0NE. The hours are Monday to Friday from 10am to 8pm, and to 9pm at weekends. Treadwell's Bookshop
Treadwell's esoteric bookshop is still in the middle of a complete refurbishment, and is due to reopen on October 1. However, its wonderful stock of magic books and other items have been available for online shopping throughout lockdown, and its online business is going from strength to strength. You can have your item posted or arrange to collect it. Christina said: "Post goes out every second day. If you're in London you can choose, 'pick up in store' at checkout and collect your order by arrangement (you just email us to fix a time you'll come by) https://www.treadwells-london.com/shop." The bookshop is at 33 Store Street, Bloomsbury. Treadwells is also running online events including talks and workshops, plus some free online tutorials and podcasts.

Stepping Stones of Greenwich
Stepping Stones, a mind, body, spirit shop at 97 Trafalgar Road, Greenwich, London, SE10 9TS, was one of the first esoteric shops to reopen after lockdown. You can pop in from 10am to 6.45pm, Monday to Sunday, as well as order items online and have readings by telephone. You can find out more about its services on its website.

Mysteries of Covent Garden
This metaphysical stockist at 34 Shorts Gardens, London, WC2H 9PX is now open every day of the week. From Monday to Saturday, the shop welcomes customers from 10.30am to 7pm, and on Sundays noon to 6pm. Readings via Zoom are also available or you can call 0207 240 3688 to make an appointment. She's Lost Control
This specialist crystal and esoteric supplies dealer, at 42 Valentine Rd, London, E9 7AD, runs an extensive online store and also runs online events. You can find out more on the website.

Wicca Moon
Wicca Moon of Eltham reopened back in June. You can find the witchcraft shop at 50 Well Hall Rd, Eltham, London SE9 6SH, and can also visit the website to buy magical supplies online here.

The Astrology Shop
According to its website, the Astrology Shop, at 78 Neal Street, London WC2H 9PA, is still shut at the moment. You can find out more at its website.

13 Moons

A sister shop to Wicca Moon, 13 Moons is based at 855 Forest Road, Walthamstow, London, E17 4AT. It currently opens from Wednesday to Friday, 1pm to 5pm. You can find 13 Moons on Facebook.

Crowleymass this Saturday at Atlantis Bookshop

Here's an event I failed to put on my list of pagan events this morning. I've now added and am sharing the details in full here:

The Atlantis Bookshop is celebrating Crowleymass on Saturday 1st December from noon to 6pm.

Every year Bali and Geraldine of the Atlantis Bookshop in London invites people to join them to commemorate the death of one of the shop's most famous customers, by celebrating the Greater Feast of the Prophet of the New Aeon, Aleister Crowley.

Crowleymass this Saturday starts at noon. Mince pies and mulled wine will be available all day and the first 39 customers that utter the magic phrase: “The Beast is Dead. Long live The Beast” will claim a present.

There’s no need to book in advance – just go along and mark the start of the Festive Season.

Event: Declaration from the Book of the Law

Every year, on the anniversary of Aleister Crowley's reception of the Book of the Law, the Atlantis Bookshop in London gives public readings from it over three days.

This year, the public declarations will take place at noon starting on Sunday. Here are the details:

Sunday 8 April: Chapter One - Nuit
Monday 9 April: Chapter Two - Hadit
Tuesday 10 April: Chapter Three - Ra Hoor Khuit

The shop doesn't normally open on Sundays, but this year it will be opening specially on 8 April from 11am to 2pm on Sunday to accommodate the reading of the first chapter. These are free events, so you can just drop in.

Every Day Magic: Signings and Successful Sales

Last November a book I worked on - alongside nearly 50 other pagan authors and practitioners from different traditions across the world - was published. It is called Every Day Magic - A Pagan Book of Days and contains spells, rituals, meditations, Pagan prayers, divinatory techniques, poems to read and recipes and craft projects to try out; one for every day of the year.

The book was my brainchild and I loved compiling all the different entries and seeing the project come together. I'm absolutely delighted to announce that Every Day Magic is also selling well. Publisher Moon Books has told me that it had sold 564 copies by the end of January. That's not bad considering the book was published on 24 November last year, so has only been in shops for about two months.

Pictured on the right is Mark Anthony Terry, who contributed entries on spring cleaning, witchcraft legends and ways to align yourself with the changing seasons. He recently popped into London's Atlantis Bookshop to sign copies. There should still be a few copies signed by Mark and myself available to buy there.

Personally, I have been trying to collect the signatures of all of the contributors in my own personal copy. I got quite a few autographs at the Every Day Magic launch party, then asked Rachel Patterson to sign it when I met up with her at the Enchanted Market last weekend. I've still got a few to go though!

Witchy Gifts: Dairies, Year Books & Every Day Magic

Every year since I started my blog I've written about a pagan diary being the perfect gift for pretty much any witch at Yule. This year, it's a bit different. Sure, diaries are still great presents, but I'd also recommend other kinds of year books, journals and almanacs.

In particular, I'm going to give a great big plug for the Moon Books' community book I edited - Every Day Magic - A Pagan Book of Days. I know I'm biased, but I really do think it is a wonderful book - I was absolutely bowled over by the entries I received from around 50 contributors, offering a different thing to do or celebrate every day of the year.

Every Day Magic: The Start of Winter Festivities

When I say it's time to start celebrating the winter festivities, you might be thinking I'm talking about Black Friday. But not exactly.

According to Every Day Magic - A Pagan Book of Days, which is celebrating its own official launch today, November 24 is the start of the festival of Brumalia.

Today's entry in the book says of Brumalia: "This Ancient Roman winter festival was similar to modern Christmas. The festival, which involved feasting, drinking and merrymaking, was in honour of Saturn, God of plenty, renewal and time, and Ceres, Goddess of agriculture. Bacchus, God of wine, was also honoured.

"The holiday started earlier and earlier over the years – much like modern Christmas celebrations. By the Byzantine era, it began on November 24th and lasted for a month until the return of the light at Saturnalia. Share a drink with friends, with the traditional blessing, ‘Vives annos’, or, ‘Live for years’."

Every Day Magic contains 366 spells, rituals, meditations, Pagan prayers, divinatory techniques, poems to read and recipes and craft projects to try out, along with the details of festivals that take place throughout the year. All the activities are intended to be easy to follow so you can pick up the book, open it to a day and find something you can do.

There are contributions from nearly 50 pagan authors and practitioners from many different traditions across the world, including Atlantis' Geraldine Beskin, best-selling pagan authors Ellen Evert Hopman, Melusine Draco, Harmonia Saille, Rachel Patterson, Caroline Wise, Elen Sentier and other Moon Books writers. I edited the book and also contributed some of the entries, including today's one about Brumalia.

Pagan Eye: Cakes and Magic at The Atlantis Bookshop

Here's another photo from the launch party for Every Day Magic - A Pagan Book of Days, which took place at The Atlantis Bookshop, near the British Museum, earlier this month. It shows a copy of the book on the wonderful buffet of cakes and scones that were provided by shop owners Geraldine and Bali.

The party took place in the temple space under the main shop, which has hosted many historic meetings in London's occult history. It was where Gerald Gardner held his coven when he was in London and was where Margaret Murray introduced him to Cecil Williamson, before the two men worked together to start up the Museum of Witchcraft. I like to think that, in a small way, this book is a part of a continuing tradition of people getting together to produce magical things.

Every Day Magic, which is published by Moon Books, contains contributions from nearly 50 pagan authors and practitioners from many different traditions across the world, including Atlantis' Geraldine Beskin, best-selling pagan authors Ellen Evert Hopman, Melusine Draco, Harmonia Saille, Rachel Patterson, Caroline Wise, Elen Sentier and other Moon Books writers. I edited it and also wrote several entries. It contains 366 spells, rituals, meditations, Pagan prayers, divinatory techniques, poems to read and recipes and craft projects to try out, along with the details of festivals that take place throughout the year.

In the UK, the book probably won't be sent out to Amazon customers until November 24, which is the official publication date, but you can buy early copies of the book at The Atlantis Bookshop, 49A Museum St, London WC1A 1LY. Some of the copies at the shop are signed by contributors too.
