My Candle Magic Book Has Sold a Milestone 9,500 Copies

I got some great news from my publisher: Pagan Portals - Candle Magic has now sold more than 9,500 copies. It was the first of my books on witchcraft published by Moon Books, and has done really well since it was launched at Treadwell's Bookshop ten years ago, in 2016.

Craft: A Recycled Wax Candle For Magical Thanks

The photo shows a candle burning on my altar, but it isn't one I bought from a shop. I made it myself with recycled wax from ends of candles collected over the past year. I like to do this at around Candlemas each year, as that's traditionally when candles were blessed. 

People on my candle magic classes often ask me what to do with wax leftover after spells or rituals. While some witches believe you should throw away anything like that, I'm of the opinion that it's better for the environment to re-use as much as possible. 

I've blogged in the past about exactly how to make recycled candles. You can find the instructions here.

I always thoroughly cleanse the wax of unwanted energy, especially if it's been used for spells. I do this as I melt it by stirring it anti clockwise, or widdershins, and visualising it being purified of all influence. This time I did that on the night of the full moon, but you can also use the power of a waning or dark moon for cleansing.

Once my candle has fully set and cooled, I use it as part of a ritual to thank the Goddess and the universe in general for aiding my magic in the past.

Spells: A Candle Magic Ritual for Earth Hour

On Saturday evening, at 8.30pm, people all over the world will turn off electric lights for Earth Hour. This is an annual event that takes place as a symbol of commitment to the planet on a Saturday close to the Spring Equinox. Many of those who take part, do things by candlelight. 

Candles offer the perfect light for creating change as they alter the atmosphere in a room. We use them to make a meal for two a romantic dinner, to turn our bathroom into a relaxing spa, to make a ghost story really spooky, or to make our homes feel more comforting. Even if the effect is only psychological, we can tap into it to create change in the world and in our lives.

Most witchcraft rituals that take place after dark do so by candlelight. The soft glow helps transport us outside normal space and time, to a liminal place where all things are possible – the best place for magic to work. We can do that to help the planet this Earth Hour. 

Candle Magic Ritual for Earth Hour

Here's a ritual you can do for Earth Hour using candles. Tealights are fine. Please make sure they are in secure containers such as jam jars, or proper holders, to avoid the risks of unintended fires. You also need some food and drink (preferably locally produced), and a journal or notebook and pen.

• Clear a space and set out a circle of candles in holders around you. Light each one and say: “As I light these candles I cast a circle to be a safe and sacred space within which to work for Planet Earth for Earth Hour.”
• Light a candle inside your circle, perhaps on an altar if you have one.
• Invite the elements and any deities you honour to attend your working, and bid them welcome. Gaia, the Greek Goddess of the Earth, is for many pagans today the spiritual embodiment of our planet. Or you could call on Mother Earth. 
• Ask what the elements and deities would like you to do to help the planet.
• Spend some time praying or conversing with each element, and with any god or goddess you have welcomed. If you prefer not to call on deities, you could meditate with the candle and ask your own inner self what you can do.
• When you have answers, write them in your journal. Writing by candlelight can feel more enchanting than by electric light. 
• Eat and drink, giving thanks to Gaia or Mother Earth for the sustenance she provides.
• Give thanks to the elements and again thank any deities you have called upon, and bid them farewell.
• Open your circle by extinguishing each candle. Say: "The circle is open."

Happy Birthday to 2 of my Pagan Portals Books!

Two of my books have their anniversaries this month. I'll probably have a little birthday celebration for them with a drink and a cake with a candle on top. 

Candle Magic

Pagan Portals - Candle Magic, which is about using candles in spells, seasonal rituals and craft techniques, was officially published on February 26, 2016, by Moon Books. 

You might have got a paperback copy a bit earlier than that, however, as some went on sale at a launch party at Treadwell's in London a few weeks before the official release date. The esoteric bookshop still always has copies on the shelves, as well as stocking my other titles. You can visit the shop at 33 Store Street, London, WC1E 7BS.

Candle Magic was my first book on witchcraft and magic, and I've been delighted at how well it has sold. It's on Moon Books' best-seller list and has been for some years. People regularly tell me how useful they find it as a reference book as well as teaching basic magical principles.

Scrying 

Pagan Portals - Scrying came out on February 25, 2022. It teaches the techniques of crystal ball reading, mirror gazing and divining with the elements. Craft: Reusing Wax to Make Magical Yuletide Candles

People often ask me what I do with wax left from burning candles for spells, rituals or divination. Well, because I like to be as sustainable as possible, I save the wax and when I've got enough I make a new candle or two!

A lot of tealight candles get left behind by people who attend my practical magic workshops, and I don't let these go to waste either. In the picture above you can see two candles I made this week by upcycling the wax. I melted all the little bits and added some Winter Spice scent. 

I stirred the pot clockwise, or sunwise, and made a wish that all my students' hopes and dreams would come true. The containers that I poured the wax into are also upcycled as they previously had candles in them. The only new bits were the wicks and the scent.

You can see a photo of the candles I made at the top. They will go on my Yule altar. As I light them I will visualise the magical energy from them flowing into the universe to help manifest everyone's desires.
