Halloween Divination: HR Giger Tarot's The Universe

For Halloween I drew a card for us all using probably the darkest, most creepy, tarot deck I own - the HR Giger Tarot. The Universe was revealed. This is the final card of the Major Arcana, but is bleaker in meaning than The World in the Rider-Waite-Smith deck, which is the equivalent in position. The Universe depicts a gigantic spaceship fleeing a dying and ravaged Earth.

On a very real level it is a warning that we, as the human race, are devastating the very planet we live on. We see technology as our saviour, but used badly it will be our destruction. Hope is there, however. On a material level it is in the form of escape in that gleanimg starship, a new Ark. On the other hand it is in the form of spiritual reawakening and awareness of the light of hope emitting from the divine.

This is a complex card, predicting the almost inevitable end of one cycle, but two potential ways forward offering a glimmer of hope for a new era to come. Will you look to technology as salvation, offering an escape from the ruins created by harmful technology - weapons of war, for example? Or, will you seek spiritual salvation?  That term might seem more Christian than Pagan, but I view it in a way that can fit with all religions and paths of belief that aim towards rebirth and renewal for the human collective consciousness. The card could also be interpreted as technology and spirituality needing to be employed together harmoniously, rather than being opposites.

Whichever interpretation you prefer, let's stop fighting, and start supporting and helping each other, before it's too late. Those parted lips are what I see this card offering as hint as to how to do that. Let's start communicating in love - or at least compassion - rather than in hate. Interestingly, although the artwork is entirely different, I'm seeing some contrasts and parallles with the card I drew for the world in August: The Emperor from Taro as Colour. That also seemed to show huge lips, but the shape they make is different. I'm seeing these as contrasting voices - the hot angry shouts of the Emperor, and the gentler, consoling, whispers of spirit.

A Poem for Samhain: What is There to Fear?

Here's a poem I wrote for Samhain or Halloween.

 What is There to Fear?

Light a candle in the dark.
What is there to fear?
But winter's grip
that reaches through
the thinning of the year.

Don't believe the lies they tell
that all around is cheer.
Summer is dead
and nights are long
and coldness creeps from here.

But there is comfort to be found.
Draw your friendships near.
Burn bright the lights
and tell the tales
That conjure memories dear.

One of my resolutions for 2025 was to write a poem for each of the eight festivals in the Pagan Wheel of the Year, and this is the 7th. You can find links to some others under "previous related posts" below.

You can find other seasonal ideas in my book Pagan Portals - Rounding the Wheel of the Year, published by Moon Books along with my other titles.

Would You Buy Your Cat a Ouija Board (or Coffin)?

Pets at Home is currently offering a cat ouija board toy as part of its Halloween range. I honestly can't decide if it's fun, tacky, or a really really bad idea.

The petstore suggests you:  "Summon playtime spirits with a rotating butterfly that mimics real prey. USB-powered, multi-sensory fun for 5 hours of chasing, pouncing, and feline enchantment."

The picture at the top shows what it looks like. A coffin-shaped cat or dog bed is also part of the Halloween range, and that's pictured below.

If you want to have a look for yourself, here's the Pets at Home link: https://www.petsathome.com/

But do let me know what you think - and if you've already bought one, what does your cat think about it?

Samhain Craft: Writing & Painting in Mushroom Ink

Here's a Samhain blessing crafted by me using mushroom ink. I foraged for shaggy inkcap mushrooms, which I know grow on a grass verge near my home. You can see a photo of them at the bottom.

Here's how to make ink from them:

  • Make sure you have the right mushrooms!
  • Pick a couple of the caps and put them in a bowl.
  • Leave them for a day or two to dissolve into black liquid.
  • Use that to paint or write with using a brush or an old-fashioned pen.

I used a narrow brush to paint the words and pentagram you can see in the picture above. It felt a very witchy way of creating a Samhain season message. You could also use the ink for writing spells or a book of shadows, if you are patient. To preserve the ink, add a bit of salt to the liquid.

You can find more ideas for seasonal witchcraft in my book Pagan Portals - Rounding the Wheel of the Year, published by Moon Books.
