Occult London: Treadwell's Massive Basement Book Sale

I popped into Treadwell's the other day to have a look at the shop's new decor, and discovered they are currently having a huge sale of books.

All the books in the basement room are being sold at £2 each or 3 for £5. There are rows of tables filled with volumes that you can browse through. Some of them are on esoteric subjects, but there's also fiction and loads of other non-fiction titles as well. I came away with a paperback novel, a medieval recipe book and a hardback on crafting.

The upstairs shop still has its usual wonderful selection of books on witchcraft, magic, paganism and other occult subjects at regular prices. Oh and the new decor is lovely too - both upstairs and down. The collage on this post shows photos I took when I was there.

Treadwell's Bookshop is at 33 Store Street, London WC1E and is open every week from Tuesday to Saturday, noon to 6pm, and browsing is welcomed. You can visit the website here: https://www.treadwells-london.com/

Thomas Becket: Christian Miracles or Medieval Magic?

At the Thomas Becket exhibition at the British Museum there are several items on display relating to the saint that people believed had miraculous powers.

After his death, people at the time thought objects associated with him could offer supernatural aid. Fragments of his clothing or pieces of his bone, held in ornate reliquaries, were famed for their healing properties. Pilgrims bought badges, partly as souvenirs of visits to holy places, but also as amulets of protection or as ways of channeling the power from the site after they had left. One particularly strange, and to modern eyes gruesome, custom related to the saint was St Thomas Water. This was his blood mixed with water, put into little flasks that his cult followers drank or soaked onto bandages as a cure-all. But are these things Christian miracles, or are they really more like medieval magic?

It is quite easy, as a modern pagan, to think there's a clear divide between magic, as in spellwork, and Christian miracles, but when you consider both to be supernatural ways of creating change in the material world, they aren't so different. We might wear a specific crystal or burn a certain colour candle, holding the view that a mixture of the properties of the object plus our own will or belief have the power to make what we want happen. A medieval member of the cult of St Thomas might wear their pilgrim badge or burn a candle to the saint holding the view that the properties of the object and their own faith would heal them or protect them. Not really so very different at all.

The picture on this post is one I took at the Becket exhibition, and shows a reliquary viewed through a translucent screen that creates a beautiful illusion of Canterbury Cathedral. I really enjoyed the exhibition, which covers the life of Thomas Becket as well as giving a glimpse into what London was like at the time. It relates the story of his murder, using objects and an animated display, then looks at changing attitudes towards the man, rebel and saint. Walking Bodies: Seeking Chaos, Chance & Inspiration

I love walking as a way to get inspiration, and I don't have to visit beautiful unspoilt countryside either. Just a stroll around my own town can give me ideas for what to write about.

On Wednesday evening I went to the online launch event for the new book Walking Bodies, which is about walking as art and walking to inspire art. It's part of a new movement using techniques from psychogeography, guided tours, perambulatory theatre and other forms of performance art. The subtitle of the event was Scores and Exchanges. Scores are basically brief ideas for themes and topics when going for a walk.

The organisers sent out seven different scores beforehand and invited participants to do one or two, and then write something short. The image to the right shows the score I decided to do. The collage at the top shows photographs I took when I was out, and the poem below is my creative offering inspired by it:

 On Straight Streets

Worms and wildflowers,
Snowflake symbols,
Fallen fence and child's spinner,
Shops for bets and Lucky booze
Art and writing on the walls -
All of these things I saw
Winding my way
On straight streets
Walking Bodies: Papers, Provocations, Actions from Walking’s New Movements, the Conference is edited by Helen Billinghurst, Claire Hind and Phil Smith. It is published by Triarchy Press. I've ordered a copy of the book and am looking forward to trying out more of the ideas within it.

You can also view Walking Bodies on Amazon. Please note I earn commission from some links.

Book Excerpt: Secret Medicines from Your Garden

Here's an excerpt from Secret Medicines from Your Garden by druid and herbalist Ellen Evert Hopman. The book is published by Healing Arts Press.

Snake Medicines

Snake Medicines were used for snake bites, insect stings, infections and poisoning. These herbs clean the blood by strengthening the liver, the organ that clears poisons from the blood stream. They also help to foster a strong metabolism.

Snake teaches us to shed our skin and renew ourselves, even after suffering many bites, poisons and traumas. When we let go and allow the universe to re-create us, we transmute our suffering into divine power.

Black Cohosh, Black Snake Root, Rattle Root, Black Bugbane (Cimicifuga racemosa)

The root tea was taken to “promote menstruation”, for colds and coughs, for tuberculosis, for constipation, for hives, as a blood purifier, as a kidney aid, to promote breast milk and for rheumatism. It was used as a sedative to help infants sleep and was considered a general tonic (sometimes it was mixed with elecampane root (Inula helenium) and stone root (Collinsonia Canadensis) to make a tonic).

The roots were infused in alcoholic spirits for rheumatic pain and a tea of the roots and plant was used in steam and as a bath for rheumatism.

A leaf poultice was applied to a baby’s sore back.

Snakeweed, Plantain

Largebracted Plantain (Plantago aristata)

The root tea was taken for dysentery.

The leaf tea was taken for poisonous bites and stings, for snake bite, bloody urine, for diarrhea and was given to children to strengthen them.

The leaf tea was used externally as a wash for bites and stings, and as a douche for vaginal discharges.

The juice was applied to sore eyes.

Narrow Leaf Plantain (Plantago lanceolata)

The leaf poultice or a tea of the leaf was applied to headaches, snake bites, burns, blisters, ulcers, insect stings.

The tea of the leaf was taken for poisonous bites, stings, snake bite and earache.

The leaf tea was used as a douche for vaginal discharge.

The root tea was used for dysentery and babies diarrhea.

Common Plantain (Plantago major)

The tea of the whole plant was used for coughs, stomach problems, as a laxative.

The leaf tea was taken for poisonous bites, stings, snake bite and bloody urine.

The leaf tea was used as a wash for sore eyes, as a douche and applied to earaches.

A crushed leaf poultice was applied to bruises and used to pull pus from wounds and infections.

A hot leaf poultice was used to draw thorns and splinters.

The leaves were bound to burns, bruises, snake bites and insect bites.

A poultice of the chopped root and leaf was applied to snake bite.

A poultice of the cooked flower stems was applied to abscesses.

The leaf poultice was applied to painful and rheumatic parts and swellings, burns, wounds and contusions, to headaches, sprains, blisters, ulcers, cuts, boils, sores, infection and stings.

The leaf was chewed and eaten to treat stomach ulcers and chewed and applied as a poultice for sores, carbuncles and hemorrhoids.

The tea of the root was used for dysentery, for diarrhea in babies, for fevers, colds, pneumonia and as a laxative.

The tea of the seeds was used to improve digestion and regulate the menses.

Practical Witchcraft: Making Charged Solstice Water

Here is a post by Jane Mortimer on making charged water, which she wrote on the Summer Solstice. It is a companion to her earlier post on making Blue Moon Water:

21st June

It's wet and miserable here today, but I've put a bottle of sparkling spring water in each of the front and back gardens to catch today's magickal sunlight, such as it is.

Charged water really is magickal. There's been a pot of Tradescantia Zebrina slowly dying from the roots up on the spare room windowsill for months on end, and I finally got round to re-potting all the live bits on Saturday. I watered them with Samhain Blue Moon water and now they're positively flourishing - and they haven't even got roots yet!

It's lovely to see plants come back to life.

The picture is copyright Jane Mortimer.

Summer Mandala: Sun Wheel of Leaves & Fallen Flowers

Midsummer's Eve is a traditional time for picking herbs. While there's some disagreement on whether that's June 20th or 23rd - just before the Solstice or a few days later - I decided to go into my garden yesterday to collect flowers and leaves for a summer mandala. The heavy rains of the past few days had battered my roses and foxgloves and the ground was covered in fallen petals. I was drawn to collect some and create a sun wheel using them as well as leaves. Some of the things I picked were from wild plants in my lawn. I have deliberately let my grass grow long for the sake of insects and bees.

Earlier this year I decided to continue a project I did back in 2017,when I made a mandala each month using flowers and other found objects, inspired by the book I edited, Every Day Magic - A Pagan Book of Days. This year, I have been doing one for each season. Back in January, I created a winter mandala and then I did one for spring in April.

Creating my summer mandala  and meditating on it afterwards reminded me of the cycle of life that the Wheel of the Year represents. The fallen petals, which would soon wither and fade, show that even at the height of summer there is both life and death. The rains that caused the blooms to drop earlier than they might have done are also necessary for other plants to grow.

Weird London: Stonehenge's Brutalist Child - Stonepenge

Everyone loves to visit a stone circle at the Solstice, don't they? If you live in South London, rather than going all the way to Stonehenge in the middle of nowhere, why not visit it's near-namesake close to home - Stonepenge!

Here are just a few of the 49 reviews posted on Google Maps of the site us locals hold sacred:
"My tribe and I go there at summer solstice to sacrifice a Beyond Meat Burger goat.  We honour my ancestors who legend has it sacrificed a real goat, we have updated this tradition to be more animal friendly and modern."

"If I need to balance my chakras, I head straight to Stonepenge. Such a place of peace and tranquility, complete with the gentle hum of illegal quad bike riders and the subtle smell of South London's finest weed."

"The heart of the local community. We meet there every full moon to enact the rites that keep the dinosaurs asleep and protect all good Pengeuins. And we have cake purchased earlier in the day from the fine new cafe in the Park. Five stars. Would recommend."
Oh and this is the review I left:
"The sacred heart of Crystal Palace! Happy memories of picnicking at the stones in my childhood, after bathing at the sports centre pool!"
Actually, that last bit's true. Those three brutalist concrete megaliths surrounded by an outer ring of smaller slabs was a seating area built in the early 1960s as part of the National Sports Centre, and I do have very happy memories of eating packed lunches there with my friends after going swimming. While those reviews were written with humour, those weirdly tall seats are a local landmark and, in their way, are loved by the people who live around the park in Penge and Crystal Palace.

As well as the photos, which I took recently, you can see a map of the area - just in case you want to visit for the Solstice or any other time. The park is mostly famous for its Victorian dinosaur statues, well worth seeing too.

Where to Watch the Sunset on Solstice Eve in London

If you're thinking of watching the sunset on the Summer Solstice Eve in London, here are some suggestions. The picture you can see at the top is one I took of the city skyline at dusk from One Tree Hill, in Honor Oak, Southwark, about 7 years ago. It's a great place to view both the sunset and the sunrise. Here are four other places in London that are recommended as good spots to watch the sunset at any time of the year, but Solstice Eve is a perfect time to do so:
  • Primrose Hill, Camden
  • Telegraph Hill Park, Brockley, Lewisham
  • Richmond Park, Richmond
  • Waterloo Bridge, London SE1
Primrose Hill and Richmond Park are also good for catching the sunrise too, if you fancy a shortest-night vigil. The actual moment of the Summer Solstice 2021 is on Monday, 21 June at 4.32am in London. Sunset on 20 June is 9.21pm and sunrise on 21 June is 4.23am.

If you know of a great spot in London to watch the sunrise or sunset that I haven't mentioned, do leave a comment.

Notes: I am not responsible for the content of these events. Contact the organisers directly with questions. I generally list things in the UK, especially in or near London, but some are outside that time zone. Where a practitioner is offering information about magical wellbeing and healing, this is *not* medical advice. If you are attending an in-person event, make sure you are aware of regulations.
