Review: Grim Grand Grammarye by Cóemgein Gowdie

Grimoires of magic are hundreds of years old, many containing spells and incantations from ancient times. Traditional practitioners that use them often swear that the rites and ceremonies within them are more powerful than the magic of modern pagan witches. Whether that's true or not, I don't know, but I've just read a book by a man who  believes it is. The Grim Grand Grammarye by Cóemgein Gowdie is an attempt to make this form of traditional magic easy to understand, and easy to practice, by 21st century witches.

The subtitle of the book is 'Making Sense of the PGM and Joining the Sabbatic Ecstasies'. PGM stands for Papyri Graecae Magicae, or Greek Magical Papyri. Originally, these were written mostly in ancient Greek, although there have been many translations. Cóemgein Gowdie writes that after beginning his journey into the Craft with Wicca, he soon became fascinated with traditional witchcraft and delved into its origins by studying ancient texts.

What he discovered was that there are correlations between magical practices and religions which on the surface seem quite different, even opposed. Deities of monotheistic faiths have origins in paganism, and there are many similarities between gods and goddesses of different pantheons. For this reason, Cóemgein believes grimoire magic is accessible to, and useable by, people of all faiths, including Wiccans, even if the wording in old books calls on Jesus, the saints, Pagan gods, or even names like Lucifer.

The first half of  The Grim Grand Grammarye covers theology, history and theory. The second half is practical magic. This is the description of the book from its back cover:

"This book is a labor of love for the world of Traditional Witchcraft. Philosophically, the Bible and the Western corpus descended to us today from the Mediterranean is discussed at length, allowing room for growth and liberation from our accepted canon to occur. Relying heavily on the Papyri Graecae Magicae, the Book of Oberon, the Grimoirium Verum and Solomonic materials, it explains clearly how:

  • To meet and pact with the Fetch
  • To meet and pact with the Paredros
  • To conjure the Grimoire spirits safely
  • To easily Hedge Jump through pacting
  • To theoretically brew Flying Ointments
  • To theoretically brew poisonous potions that release the Double
  • To Dream True
  • To construct a Mandrake Manikin
  • To draw the Ring of Arte
  • To establish a Pit of Sacrifice
  • To take the Crossroads Pact
  • To make valid substitutions for obscure spell ingredients and animal sacrifice
  • To make Invisibility spells work

"Everything you need to work sorcerously with plant people and true spirits from beginning to end is presented clearly and entirely idiot-proofed."

While I'm not personally intending to brew up a poisonous potion or summon a Chthonic entity at a crossroads, I found this book fascinating from an information point of view. I'm very much of the opinion that witches should know how traditional magic and witchcraft worked, even if their own practices are very modern.

Painted Rocks: Urban Art or Wanton Vandalism?

I took these photos of painted rocks in a park last summer. I'd been intending to blog about them, but I held off because I know many pagans are extremely opposed to leaving anything artificial when out and about. "Leave only footprints, take only memories," is a phrase often repeated.

When it comes to sacred sites, or places of unspoilt natural beauty or archaeological interest, I totally agree. At wells and springs, there is a real problem with people leaving plastic offerings or nylon fabric clouties. They don't biodegrade and are not in keeping with the ancient traditions of most of these places. Volunteers have to remove them to stop them damaging trees through their weight and constricting bindings.

However, I'll admit I'm a bit of a fan of street art in cities. I've blogged about that many times in the past, including this environmentally minded wall painting. I also don't have a problem about people attaching things to railings where it is permitted by the owners, or putting whatever art or offerings they like in their own gardens, so long as it won't harm wildlife.

So, what about these painted rocks?  They are at the edge of a Tarmac path in a public park, which is semi-urban. The park is a wetland habitat for birds and plants, but it is also a much-loved community asset. During lockdown, it is where many local residents would go for their daily walks. These rocks started appearing at that time. I suspect they were partly a way for people to communicate with others when they weren't allowed to meet up for face-to-face gatherings. They were also a way for people to express their love of the NHS, wishes for everyone to stay safe, and some remembrances of loved ones who had passed, as well as presumably a craft to occupy kids stuck at home.

The park itself is somewhere I like to visit when I'm allowed to travel for weekends away, but it isn't near my home so I haven't been there for a while. Now regulations have eased, I'm planning a trip to that area soon, and I will go for a walk in the park. I wonder whether the painted rocks will still be there. Maybe there will be more of them, or maybe someone will have removed them, thinking they are litter.

Personally, I like them, I am going to admit. I do hope anyone who paints anything outdoors uses non-toxic paint and avoids glitter, which is very bad for the environment, but apart from that I can't see these stones are doing any more damage than the Tarmac path itself or the council's painted signs that dot the park.

But what do you think? Is this form of urban art a dangerous hazard, an act of vandalism, a eyesore, or a crafting project that brings joy to many and harms none?  Do leave a comment.

Pagan Eye: A Bee on Yellow Blossom on a Daily Walk

Here's a bee on yellow blossom, which I photographed yesterday on a daily walk around my area. Unsurprisingly this year, nearly all the photographs I've taken of the great outdoors have been pretty local to me. They've been things I can see from my windows, things in my garden, and photos taken on the short walks I've done in the streets or park close to my home.

It does show that you can observe the beauty of nature and the changing seasons without getting in a car or on a bus or train. Even in cities like London, where I live, there are plants and flowers and trees and wildlife. What's more, I can observe these things in the most environmentally friendly way possible - on foot.

My Pagan Eye posts show photos that I find interesting - seasonal images, pagan sites, events, or just pretty pictures. If you want to send me a photo for a Pagan Eye post, please email it to badwitch1234@gmail.com Let me know what the photo shows and whether you want your name mentioned or not. For copyright reasons, the photo must be one you have taken yourself.

Is the Image of a Witch in Stripy Stockings Offensive?

I love wearing stripy socks, and I'm not alone. My friend and fellow witch Jane Mortimer enjoys knitting them, while author Sheena Cundy deliberately chose them in the images for her excellent The Madness and the Magic series of novels. There's also other Witch Lit out there depicting magical women in similar patterned leg-attire.

However, someone I know was told that stripy stockings were considered offensive stereotyping. She said they shouldn't be worn as part of a witch's attire. I must admit I was a little surprised, and I wondered what others thought. I also did a tiny bit of research.

Stripes did appear on stockings as far back the 17th century - usually a band of stripes at the top forming a garter. I've heard suggestions that wearing them was considered somewhat risque at the time. However, stripes for socks really only became a big thing in the early 20th century as sportswear in team colours.

As far as I know, the image of witches as wearing stripy stockings was popularised by the 1939 film The Wizard of Oz, when the Witch of the East's legs are shown sticking out from under the house that crushed her. She is wearing stripy stockings and ruby slippers. I've heard suggestions that the connections with stripes and witches might go back earlier than that, but not found any definite sources.

From the mid 20th century, both striped socks and stockings went in and out of regular high-street fashion quite apart from anything sporty, saucy or witchy. A Halloween costume consisting of striped legwear, a black skirt and a pointy had will definitely implies witch, but is it offensive?

What do you think? Are striped stockings on witches cute or insulting? Does it depend on the circumstances? Would you wear them? Do leave a comment.

You can view The Madness and the Magic on Amazon.

The pictures show me in my own stripy socks (top), Jane Mortimer's hand-knitted socks and the cover of the first book in The Madness and the Magic series.

Spells: An Earth Dragon Drumming Chant for Earth Day

Today is Earth Day and a theme this year is Restore Our Earth. You can find out more about Earth Day and official online events here.

I've written some words for today that could be chanted while drumming, clapping, or just on their own. They are a plea to the Earth Dragon for strength and energy so we can each as individuals do more to protect the land.

I was inspired for this partly because tomorrow is St George's Day, but also because of Dragon Environmental Network, a pagan group that has been involved in doing magical work for environmental causes.

Earth Dragon
Here my plea
Earth Dragon
Come to me

Earth Dragon
Guide my hand
To protect
This sacred land

Give me strength
And grant to me
Earth Dragon
Energy

At this time
Of spring’s rebirth
Help me to
Restore our Earth

Earth Dragon
Hear my plea
Earth Dragon
Blessed be

The picture shows the Earth Day Flag.

Divination: Joy or Six of Fishes from the Merlin Tarot

It's always lovely when you draw a tarot card that says "Joy". That was what I turned over when I picked a single card from the Merlin Tarot as an indication of what lies ahead. I've been doing readings for the world every month for over a year. As you might expect during those difficult times, few have been exactly joyful. But things are changing and this card shows it.

I used the Merlin Tarot because I've been deliberately using decks from my collection that aren't the ones I most frequently turn to. I was given the Merlin Tarot many years ago by a friend, but I must admit I don't often use it because although the Major Arcana is beautifully illustrated with pictures inspired by the tales of the life of Merlin, the Minor Arcana is more stylised. The cards show birds, serpents, fishes and beasts plus a single word meaning.

The suit of fishes corresponds to cups in the Rider-Wait-Smith and similar decks. It is to do with emotions. Traditional interpretations for the six of cups relate to innocent love and also nostalgia for the past. The Rider-Waite-Smith picture shows a young boy offering a young girl a chalice filled with flowers in an idealised village scene. What I get from this is that we are all yearning in many ways to return to the joys and innocence of the time before Covid. We want to meet up with friends we haven't seen in person for a while. We might also want the chance for love and romance. I would say our wishes for these things might very soon come true.

Write-Hearted Interviews Me on Witchcraft Writing

I've been interviewed by Stuart Wakefield for the podcast and YouTube channels of Write-hearted. Stuart is conducting a series of informal conversations with writers in all disciplines, and also those connected with writing, whether they be editors, agents or publishers.

In the video above, he asks me questions about my witchcraft books and blog, as well as my career in other forms of publishing, including roleplaying games. You can also listen to the podcast here.

My books on candle magic, poppets, guided visualisations and scrying are published by Moon Books and you can find my author page here

Socks! Lockdown End Won't Be An End To Crafting

I know lots of my fellow witches and pagans have been avidly crafting during lockdown. In fact the chats in the Folklore Podcast zoom lectures have had as much conversation about knitting, sewing and crotchet as about the subject of the talks. Will the crafting frenzy end now the pubs and shops are open? My fellow blogger Jane Mortimer doesn't think so. In this post she wrote about shopping, crafting and a perfect sock pattern:

I was like a greyhound out of a trap on April 12, heading for the charity shops. Queueing outside one, I asked the lady who was letting us in one by one if they had any knitting needles. She said "Yes, just ask the chap behind the counter and he'll let you sort through them."  Well, he sat me in a chair, and brought me box after bag after box - it took me an hour to go through them all, finding 6" DPNs in the right sizes to knit socks.  I ended up putting loads back because there were so many, but I've got enough to make up a few sets of 5, as my sister has warned me it won't be long before I've got umpteen different socks on needles, knitting them in rotation.  She's right!

Below are I've shared a couple of entries from my BoS, about my sister Sarah's sock patterns (with her permission, since there must be plenty of witches out there who knit their own socks and turn oddments into scrappy socks.

Sarah’s Vanilla Sock Pattern - the only sock pattern I’ll ever need…

Having knitted 30 pairs of socks using the pattern my lovely sis devised, it’s tattooed on my brain, but I’m writing it down for posterity in case I have a break that’s long enough to get rusty. It fits my size 39/40 feet.

Using 4-ply and a set of 5 No.12/2.5mm DPNs, cast on 56, holding 2 needles together on the left (rubber band helps keep the ends level) to ensure a good stretch round the cuff.  K2P2 rib for 18 rounds. Turn inside out and sew the end in, putting the needle through the knot where you started casting on to avoid having a dip in the edge of the cuff. Mark this place with a stitch marker as the beginning of each round.

Continue in StSt till work measures 6”, then using a contrast (lary!) yarn, knit half a round, then purl back. No knots required. This marks where the Afterthought Heel is going to be.  (You can remove the marker on the cuff now you’ve got this line as a guide). Carry on knitting with the proper yarn till work measures 6½“ from lary line, then shape toe.  Mark the beginning and half-way point of the round with stitch markers. Join in toe yarn if it’s a contrast and K 1 round, then shape toe:

Round 1:  *K1, S1, K1, psso then K to end of 1st needle, K to last 3 sts of 2nd needle then K2tog, K1.*  Rep from * to * on other 2 needles.

Round 2:  K without shaping.

Rep these 2 rounds till there are 6 sts on each needle, then cut a 10” end, put the front and back of the toe on 2 needles and graft together with Kitchener Stitch using a tapestry needle, and sew the end in.

Now for the Afterthought Heel.

Pick up 28 sts either side of the lary line, from the up-stroke of each ‘v’ to avoid twisting stitches. Then remove the lary line by unpicking the first couple of stitches and then chopping through what’s left with scissors, taking great care not to cut any of your precious knitting.  Join in yarn (contrast maybe) at start of round (use stitch markers again) and K 2 rounds, pulling up the corners as tight as possible. On the 3rd round, using a 2.5mm crochet hook, pick up the lower half of the middle stitch in the gap and pick up loops left, right and centre till you’ve reached the top, then slip the last loop onto the first needle.  K2tog and continue knitting to other side. Pick up stitches again (there’ll be an extra loop at the top), and carry on same as first half to end of round.  Now shape the heel using Rounds 1 and 2 of toe shaping and finish in the same way.  Put the finished sock on a blocker, et voila!  You have a wonderful sock!

Yompers …..

A couple of blunders had a happy ending with my first pair of HD walking socks.  I was so busy negotiating on Ebay for some lovely olive green merino wool, I failed to notice the letters ‘DK’ on the label in the pic, so when it arrived I realised I couldn’t use it with my usual sock pattern.

Around the same time, I bought a skein of hand-dyed ‘4-ply’ lambswool with nylon from a seller.  It was a real struggle to knit with on 2.5mm DPNs, so I had a light bulb moment and teamed it with the green merino, a set of 3mm DPNs and cast on 48 instead of 56.  When knitting yompers, decrease down to 5 sts on each needle at toe and heel, not 6 like you'd do with 4-ply. The result is in the pic – my first pair of yompers. I’ve since ordered more 8-ply wool by mistake, and have found enough woolly DK in the garage to do the contrast bits.  Happy days!
