Wind Harp: Ace of Air from the Witches' Wisdom Tarot

I drew a card for Halloween and it was the Wind Harp: the Ace of Air from the new Witches' Wisdom Tarot. This harp of bones string with spider silk offers the wisdom of the ancestors and of nature, both beautiful and terrible. Perfect for the magic of Samhain.

This year I've been drawing a card each month from different decks. I am still enchanted with the latest addition to my collection, and with the readings it has been offering. The book that comes with the set offers the following wisdom for the Wind Harp:

"Between the bones of what was first created, the winds of summoning stir the strings woven by spiders and filled with stars. A deafening noise roars through the cosmic chord of sounds piled one upon the other. Together they are almost music. The swish of a breeze and the rustle of leaves, the melody of birdsong and the howl of a storm, and all the sounds in between... This is the magic of the Wind Harp."

The counsel of the card is to slow down, stop talking, and listen. Sometimes we need to do that in order to learn the answers to our question. The magic suggested is to go outside, feel the air on your skin, listen to the wind and think: "What is the enchantment of the moment?" On Halloween, you might even hear the whispers of those who have gone before - that is beautiful witchcraft for Samhain.

Visualisation: A Journey For When the Veil is Thin

Here is a guided visualisation for Samhain, which is a time to think about the spirits of those who have died, and for Halloween, the time of year when we celebrate all things scary.

Guided visualisations can often be thought of as a bit light and fluffy. They sometimes get categorised with general mind, body, spirit practices as forms of meditation with spoken words to help people stay mindful as they journey towards enlightenment. However, in witchcraft, guided visualisations can take us along dark paths to face our fears. I wrote this guided visualisation for the time around Samhain, or Halloween. It is called A Journey for When the Veil is Thin.

Because it is designed to be potentially scary, read all the text through before doing it, to make sure you want to attempt it as a visualisation. You could also record the words and then listen to them with your eyes fully closed. Before doing the visualisation, make sure you are sitting comfortably and are somewhere safe where you won’t be disturbed.

Close your eyes. Take three deep breaths in and out and relax, then visualise the following:

Imagine you are in an old cottage, in the country. The cottage is sparsely furnished, but comfortable, with armchairs by an open fireplace. It is an October night, and outside your window the sky is dark. The room is warm and lit by the glow from the fire and a candle lantern, which hangs on a hook. You take the lantern and leave the cottage by the front door into the chill and darkness of the night.

Close the cottage door behind you and walk down garden path towards the front gate. As you do so, you notice that the flowers that in the summer bloomed in the garden are mostly dry and brown and dead. Even the late Michaelmas daisies, which flowered at the start of autumn, are dying. This is the natural cycle of the seasons, and summer is dead.

You leave by the garden gate, into the narrow country lane that runs past this cottage. It is a hollow way. It is an ancient trackway, worn down by thousands of years of feet and wheels until the path was dug deep into the ground. On either side, high banks are topped with hedgerows, speckled with berries, red as blood. Trees grow along the hollow way too, and their branches, bearing autumn leaves, arch overhead, touching each other, so the way is enclosed.  Many people have walked this way before, many more who are now dead, than those who are living. You follow them on this night when the veil is thin. Perhaps you see the shades of their ghosts walking along the path with you. If so, they do not seem to see you. They are but memories held by the earth and stones on which they walked. The only sounds you hear are the rustling of dry leaves in the wind.

You come to a stile, which you must cross, onto a path which leads into a forest of trees. These are losing their leaves. Some branches are bare already. Dry twigs snap as you walk, a sharp contrast to the soft leaf mulch rotting into the ground that softens your footfalls. The scent of it is all around you. It is even darker in among the trees, and only the glow of your lantern illuminates a few steps ahead. You know you must tread carefully.

You follow the path through the woods. It is dense and obscured. You must push through brambles to following it through the wood.

After a while, you come to the edge of the forest, Beyond it, over fence of wrought iron railings, you see a graveyard. In the middle of that is a small, old chapel. Walk along the outside of the railings, between the wood and the graveyard, until you find the gate.

Go through the gate and follow the path through the graveyard. Look at the headstones as you go. Do you see any names? Do you read any epitaphs?

You come to the chapel, but it is dark and locked. This is not where you are bound tonight. The path goes around it, and you follow. The graves beyond it are older, more crumbling, covered in lichen and harder to read, sunk deeper into the ground, as though the earth is reclaiming its own. You walk on through the graves, to the other edge of the iron railed boundary around this resting place for old bones, then through another gate to a field beyond.

You are in an open field now, the edges of which are lost in darkness, although you can just make out the narrow path to follow across it, into that darkness ahead. You follow the path, and as you walk, out of the gloom you see huge stones rising. They are ancient megaliths standing at the entrance to a long barrow, the mouth of which gapes blackly beyond the tall stones.

You approach the long barrow. You realise that the candle in your lantern is burning low and fluttering. It is your choice – do you enter the barrow or turn around and go back the way you came?

Long barrows are places where the ancient ancestors of the land were laid to rest, long, long ago, before the time of written history. Legends talk of spirits and guardians and even gods that might be encountered here. Who knows what you will meet on this night when the veil is thin?

If you choose to, step inside and walk into mouth of the barrow. There is room for you to walk, but still it feels enclosed around you. By flickering lantern light you can see the bare stones of tunnel walls going into it, but not the end. Then, your lantern splutters and goes out. You are in total darkness. It is a place where even starlight does not shine, where there is nothing except you and the darkness. And you do not know whether you are in the world of men any more or the world of the spirits of the ancestors.

You stay stationary in the darkness for a while. It is hard to tell the passage of time as there is nothing to judge it by. Then, you begin to perceive ahead of you pinpoints of light, like tiny distant stars. Perhaps it is your mind playing tricks with you in the darkness, or perhaps it is something else. They move closer, or get larger, spreading out in the space ahead of you. And in their centre is a shape, a silhouette of a being. The being moves closer, towards you. The lights or stars around them start to turn, to spiral. You watch as this swirling spiral of stars seems to spread out around you, and then the silhouette of the being is right in front of you. What do you do? What unfolds between you and the being?

Take your time to let this encounter play out to its conclusion.

At last, the encounter comes to an end. The being turns and slowly retreats, returning back into the swirling spiral of stars, which seem to diminish in size, or move away, until you can see the silhouette of the being no more, and the stars are just tiny pinpoints of light. And then they are gone, and you are in darkness. You can sense the floor and walls and ceiling of the long barrow around you. Turn around. You see the mouth of the long barrow, and beyond that a starlit night sky, with all the stars in their normal place.

You leave the long barrow, walk past the megalithic stones at the entrance and cross the field to the railings at the edge of the churchyard. As you do so, it seems that your vision has become more attuned to the night, and you can see more easily by starlight as you walk back through the graveyard. You go through the gate beyond the chapel and enter the path through the trees. Now the wood does not seem so dark either. You easily follow the path to the stile in the hedge. You cross the stile again, and go into the hollow way. You walk back along the lane, go through your garden gate, up the garden path and through the front door into the warm and comfortable cottage. You close the door, and hang your lantern on its hook. Your journey is complete.

To return to your normal world, shake your fingers and toes, stretch your legs and arms, then open your eyes.

After you have finished, it is important to ground properly. This can best be done by having something to eat and a non-alcoholic drink, but you can also stamp your feet on the floor a few times to feel its solidity, or grip a solid surface, such as the edge of a table, to feel a physical connection with reality. You might also want to take notes of anything you experienced.

You can view more guided visualisations in my book Pagan Portals - Guided Visualisations.

Halloween Shopping: Crystal Skulls, Bones & Puzzles

What do you think of my new crystal skull?

As you probably realised from looking at the photo, it isn't actually real crystal. It is a 3D puzzle made of clear plastic, but I think it looks pretty good anyway and is happily sitting on my shelf in my witchy room. I'm thinking of giving it a name. Maybe Scully - what do you think?

I treated myself to the skull for Halloween, along with another jigsaw puzzle showing skeletons. Both were in a sale at The Works a few weeks ago. Not being able to go to Halloween parties this year means I've been looking for suitably spooky things to do just with my husband, rather than with a crowd of friends.

We put the puzzle together in about an hour yesterday, but we did use the instructions that come in the box showing what order to put the bits together. Each piece is numbered and there is a sheet of paper showing what the order looks like too. If you tried to do it without that I think it would take ages.

Although I celebrate Samhain as a pagan festival - I'll be going to an online Wheel of the Year ritual - I do also enjoy more secular spooky fun. Jigsaw puzzles and games have been helping to keep me sane during lockdown. The picture below shows the skeleton puzzle, which I'm aiming to start next. I also have a beautiful vintage black cat puzzle that includes a spell to cast when you've finished.

Mind you, I am also tempted to try scrying with my fake crystal skull some time around October 31. I regularly scry using a crystal ball, but I've successfully used reflective plastic for divination in the past too. I'm always up for experimenting.

Shopping: Treadwell's has Redecorated and Reopened

Treadwell's esoteric shop has had a complete facelift, and is now open in time for Samhain shopping. Although Treadwell's is best known for its wonderful stock of occult books, both new and old, it also sells loads of other things. Last year I bought a great quality Ouija board there, and it still has them in stock. You might be able to spot one in the picture above.

Owner Christina said: "Come see our refurbished shop floor, and get a book or two - or incense, candles, cauldrons, soaps, herbs. Umm, yes, there's a mummy in the window, too. Please also come just to say hello - we've missed you all."

I've missed visiting Treadwell's in person too, although I did order books from the online shop in the summer, including the Treadwell's Book of Plant Magic, which is brilliant.

Treadwell's is open from Tuesdays to Saturdays, from noon to 5pm, and is at 33 Store Street, London WC1E. You can still order books online if you prefer, via the website: https://www.treadwells-london.com/shop. It is also still running online events including talks and workshops.

Review: The Witches' Wisdom Tarot Boxed Set

Everything looks gorgeous in the new Witches' Wisdom Tarot, by Phyllis Curott and Danielle Barlow, which is officially published today. Opening up the set for the first time is like delving into an enchanted box of secrets. It is beautiful inside and out, with magical words and art on the packaging, as well the cards, a quality guidebook and a natural hessian bag to keep them safe.

I also absolutely love the artwork on the cards, which drew me to want to use them immediately. Just look at that pathway of mushrooms leading into a forest on the Ten of Earth Card and the lush Ace of Water. This set offers a re-imagining of more traditional decks. Phylllis and Danielle minimised a lot of the Qabbalistic and Western Esoteric symbolism found in Rider-Waite-Smith style decks, and used visualisation techniques to find inspiration from the natural world for all of their cards.

The suits are tied into the elements rather than swords, wands, chalices and pentacles, which isn't that unusual. Court figures have been replaced with messengers, witches, craftsmen and goddesses, and the major arcana have been reversed, with some cards replaced entirely. Now, the first card is the World and the final card is the Pilgrim. Death has been replaced with Rebirth and the Fool is the Pilgrim. Rearranging tarot cards in this way is pretty brave, but I think it works. There are instructions for using the cards in their older sequence if you prefer.

Publisher Hay House is known for producing tarot sets with gentler messages than those traditionally found in the Rider-Waite-Smith. The Witches' Wisdom Tarot is interesting because it aims to provide positive messages, while at the same time the artwork packs a real punch in showing the hardships of nature and the destructions caused by man. For example, Five of Water shows a starving polar bear on melting ice while The World depicts a refugee leaving a burning city with their possessions on their back.

Environmental and social messages run throughout the descriptions and interpretations offered. My one criticism is that the wisdom and counsel offered could go further beyond that nuance. However, the authors also encourage those using the cards to find their own meanings within the artwork, and it is certainly rich enough. The book describes techniques for guided visualisations, journeying and invocations to develop your own relationship with each card. Personally, I may well do that, although I tend to use an intuitive approach to readings rather than rely on official interpretations anyway. The book also offers spells you can try, which really adds to the set's versatility.

Publisher Hay House says the deck is: "a doorway for everyone who wishes to encounter the Sacred - in realms of Spirit, embodied by Nature and residing within our hearts." I think that's a good way of describing it. I love this deck and I've been using it every day since I got my review copy. I know I will continue to use it - and explore the journeys the artwork invites - for a long, long while. This is the best tarot set Hay House has produced in my opinion.

Shopping: Stardust Apothecary & Season of the Witch

When Kitchen Witchcraft author Rachel Patterson recommended Stardust Apothecary as making some really lovely Samhain items, my fellow Bad Witch blogger Jane Mortimer ordered a package of goodies from the Etsy shop. It arrived a few days ago. Jane wrote:

"In the parcel were bottles of anointing oil for Protection and Success, a roll-on bottle of Poison Witch perfumed oil, a little surprise bag containing a tea-light, some nice incense cones and a cute little bottle of Blue Moon oil, and best of all a bottle of 'Season of the Witch' perfume spray. I am particularly happy about the perfume spray because as it mellows it evokes a memory of a perfume I absolutely loved as a teenager. So, any crones out there who loved and lost Miners' 'Wild' perfume in the late 60s, take a trip down memory lane with this lovely scent. I'd recommend it to witches of all ages. After all, I was only fifteen when I fell in love with it! Stardust apothecary's packaging is very secure, and filled out with compostable veg-based thingies - not polystyrene.  The little coffin box and drawstring bags can be re-used, as can the sweet little silver charms tied to the ribbon bows. Jane is a happy bunny!"

Jane liked the Season of the Witch perfume so much, she decided to order more, but was disappointed to see it had sold out and that Stardust Apothecary is now busy producing the winter range. However, she chatted to Amaris who runs Stardust, who said she might be able to reproduce the perfume before the end of the year if there was enough demand. I hope it does come back into stock as I'm keen to try it out myself now!

Halloween Games: Mysterium - Ghostly Murder Mystery

As well as celebrating Samhain as a pagan festival, I also like the spooky fun of secular Halloween. And while Halloween parties might be cancelled this year, playing games can still be done even if you only have a small number of people in your household. One of my favourite Halloween-themed games is Mysterium, which is about a haunted house in which a murder took place.

The idea is that one of the players is the ghost of the murder victim, and the others are psychics trying to find out who killed them, where, and with what object. The ghost can only communicate by giving the other players cards with dream-like pictures on that give clues. They have to guess the right answers before the in-game clock reaches a certain time, with each round being representing an hour on that clock. The mechanics are sort of a cross between Dixit and Cluedo, if you are familiar with those games.

Mysterium is for up to 7 players aged 10 and over. I used to think that it was only good with a large number, but recently my husband and I tried the two-player rules. It works quite well, even though it is a bit different to the standard game. If you are all on your own, there's even an online version you can download as an app and play against an AI.

Pagan Eye: An Apple Pie for the Feast of Pomona

This photograph of a home-made apple pie and cream is making my mouth water. It was baked by Jane Mortimer, but I now might have to get cooking and make one myself!

Jane said: "I hope Pomona will forgive me for being late with celebrating her special day, but I didn't look at my copy of Pagan Portals Every Day Magic until it was too late to make a pie for the right day. I made an apple pie using windfall apples collected locally and frozen a few weeks ago. I ate my portion with a liberal dollop of clotted cream. I'd like to think food eaten in honour of deity doesn't have any calories, but sadly that's not the case.  Good thing we had salad for our main course!"

Pomona is the Roman goddess of the orchards, and Apple Day is celebrated in the UK on October 21, but I don't think it is ever the wrong time to have apple pie!  Pagan Portals - Every Day Magic is published by Moon Books and has something to do or celebrate every day of the year.

My Pagan Eye posts show photos that I find interesting - seasonal images, pagan sites, events, or just pretty pictures. If you want to send me a photo for a Pagan Eye post, please email it to badwitch1234@gmail.com Let me know what the photo shows and whether you want your name mentioned or not. For copyright reasons, the photo must be one you have taken yourself.

The photo is copyright Jane Mortimer.

Poisonous Herbs: Hemlock - A Witches' Plant

Dry hemlock seed heads along river banks is one of the iconic sights of an autumn walk. Hemlock is also one of the poisonous plants associated with witchcraft. The Weird Sisters in Shakespeare's Macbeth throw a root of it into their cauldron, and it is another traditional ingredient of flying ointment along with mandrake, henbane and aconite

Matt Porter, who specialises in growing and preserving poisonous herbs, sent me these pictures of his two hemlock plants and their roots. He wrote:

"I harvested after the plants went to sleep for the year. The smaller potted plant is water hemlock and the larger one is poison hemlock. The whole root inside the jar is the water hemlock root and the other root is the poison hemlock root. I thoroughly enjoyed growing my hemlock this year and last year and found it quite low maintenance when it came to its upkeep. I kept all of the leaves and flower head cuttings and dried them out for my altar and ritual uses."

The pictures are copyright Matt Porter, who has very kindly been allowing me to use his pictures of poisonous plants on A Bad Witch's Blog. You can see earlier posts here:

Shopping: Bewitched Botanicals Halloween Collection

Although I've not actually run out of soaps and smellies, I couldn't resist ordering more. I'm now looking forward to washing my hands with Ghost Puffs, bathing in Sleepy Hollow and maybe indulging in some socially-distanced Trick or Treating on the side. They are the names of Bewitched Botanicals' Halloween Collection, including scrubs, whips, melts and, of course, wonderful soaps.

My witchy friend Jane Mortimer did the same. She said: "I ordered a little stash of not-particularly-Samhain goodies a couple of weeks ago from Bewitched Botanicals, and was very impressed with the mini-sizes of scrub and whip (I ordered the sample/gift bag). Their Halloween collection has moved up a notch from 'coming soon' to 'it's here', so I celebrated Pension Day by ordering lots of lovely stuff to slather on to my wizened witchy skin."

Throughout October I've been posting about Samhain shopping. I've posted pictures of lovely witchy stuff I've seen, things I've bought, and also shared photos of other people's wonderful finds. I've been buying Bewitched Botanicals' soap for years now - it really is my favourite and is kind to my extremely sensitive skin. They also produce wonderful special collections, so I also snap up things that won't be available forever.

The picture at the top shows Halloween bath cauldrons, the middle picture show Sleepy Hollow melts, and the bottom picture shows Ghost Puffs soap. You can visit Bewitched Botanicals' online shop here: https://bewitchedbotanicals.com/
